Nafplio: A Travel Guide for All Seasons

Nafplio is not merely a beautiful destination; it is a city-experience. As the first official capital of the newly established Greek state, the aura of history permeates every corner. The Venetian castles, neoclassical mansions, cobbled streets, and vibrant bougainvillea create a setting that seems to have stepped out of another era, making it one of the most romantic destinations in Greece. Whether you are looking for a couples' retreat, a culturally rich excursion, or simply a place to relax by the sea, Nafplio combines it all with unique grace.

To enjoy the main sights and feel the pulse of the city, a weekend is sufficient. However, to explore everything unhurriedly, visit nearby archaeological sites, and enjoy the beaches, an ideal stay duration is three to four days. This allows you to combine city sightseeing with relaxation and nearby excursions. A trip to Nafplio is always an excellent choice, regardless of the season.

Why Go

Nafplio, built on the Argolic Gulf in the eastern Peloponnese, is a city that harmoniously blends natural beauty with a rich and layered history. Its geographical position, protected by the imposing rocks of Acronauplia and Palamidi, made it a strategic port and one of the most important naval and commercial centres in the region since antiquity. The city exudes an aristocratic, Venetian finesse rarely found elsewhere in mainland Greece. The narrow, winding alleys of the Old Town, the impeccably preserved neoclassical buildings with wooden balconies and blooming courtyards, and the emblematic Syntagma Square create an atmosphere that transports visitors back in time.

Nafplio's history is evident at every turn. From the mythical years and the hero Nauplius, son of Poseidon, to the walls fortified successively by Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans, the city was a bone of contention for centuries. Its most glorious period was undoubtedly when it was designated the first capital of the liberated Greek state, from 1828 to 1833. It was here that Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor, lived and was assassinated, and where the first Hellenic Parliament operated. This legacy is what gives the city its unique character.

Beyond its history, Nafplio is a vibrant, modern city. The coastal promenade buzzes with life, with cafes and bars offering stunning views of Bourtzi, while numerous restaurants and traditional tavernas serve the flavours of the Argolic land. The combination of the romantic Old Town, the vitality of the new town, and direct access to the sea and top archaeological sites explains why Nafplio is famous and why it remains one of the most beloved destinations for Greek and international visitors, every day of the year.

How to Get There

Access to Nafplio is particularly easy, especially from Athens, making it an ideal destination for short breaks.

By Car:
From Athens, the distance is approximately 140 km, and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Follow the Athens - Corinth National Road and then the Corinth - Tripoli National Road, taking the exit towards Argos/Nafplio. The road is modern and safe throughout the journey. You can find detailed information on distance and cost in the article Athens Nafplio: 145 km, tolls €6.40.

From Thessaloniki, the distance is approximately 640 km, and the journey takes about 6 to 7 hours, following the Egnatia Odos and then the Athens - Thessaloniki National Road, and subsequently the Athens - Corinth.

By KTEL Bus:
Argolida KTEL operates very frequent daily routes from Kifissos station in Athens to Nafplio. The journey takes just over 2 hours, and the buses are modern and comfortable, offering a reliable alternative for those who prefer not to drive.

What to See

Nafplio is full of historical monuments and places of unparalleled beauty. Take your time to discover them.

Palamidi

The imposing fortress crowning the city is Nafplio's hallmark. Built by the Venetians in record time (1711-1714), it is a masterpiece of fortification architecture. To reach the top, you can either drive or, if you're feeling energetic, climb the famous 999 steps (there are actually 857). The panoramic view of the city, the Argolic Gulf, and the surrounding area from the top is simply mesmerising. Don't miss visiting the bastion of Agios Andreas, where Theodoros Kolokotronis was imprisoned.

Bourtzi

The small sea fortress dominating the harbour entrance is Nafplio's second iconic image. It was built by the Venetians in the mid-15th century for protection against pirates. Over the years, it served as a fortress, the residence of an executioner, and even a luxurious hotel. Today, you can visit it by boat, which departs regularly from the waterfront.

Acronauplia

The rocky peninsula of Acronauplia is the oldest part of the city. Upon it coexist the walls of three different eras: ancient, Byzantine/Frankish, and Venetian. A walk along its paths, amidst pine trees and with views of the Old Town on one side and the Argolic Gulf on the other, is a unique experience. At the top, the Clock Tower stands out, a modern structure on the site of the old one, which was destroyed during World War II.

Old Town

Nafplio's heart beats in the narrow, cobbled alleys of the Old Town. Walk without a map and surrender to its charm. Discover Vasileos Konstantinou and Staikopoulou streets, full of shops selling souvenirs, local products, elegant clothing, and handmade jewellery. Admire the neoclassical buildings with their flowery balconies and hidden courtyards.

Syntagma Square

The central square of the Old Town is one of the most beautiful and historic squares in Greece. Here you will find some of the city's most important buildings: the Vouleftiko, which housed the first Hellenic Parliament, the Archaeological Museum, housed in the old Venetian fleet warehouse, and the Trianon, the old Ottoman mosque.

Archaeological Museum of Nafplio

Housed in the impressive Venetian building in Syntagma Square, the museum hosts findings from across Argolida, covering periods from prehistory to late antiquity. The top exhibit is the famous Dendra Panoply, a complete bronze Mycenaean armour from the 15th century BC, unique of its kind.

Arvanitia Promenade

This is the most beloved walking route for both locals and visitors. It is a paved pedestrian path about one kilometre long, starting from the end of the promenade and, following the coastline beneath the rock of Acronauplia, ending at Arvanitia beach. The route, especially at sunset, offers enchanting sea views.

Activities

Nafplio and its surrounding area offer a plethora of activities for every taste and season.

  • Swimming: For a quick dip, Arvanitia beach is a stone's throw from the city. A few kilometres outside Nafplio, the organised and sandy Karathona beach is ideal for families and those who enjoy water sports. Other nearby options include the beaches of Tolo, Kondyli, and Vivari.
  • Water Sports: During the summer months, on the beaches of Karathona and Tolo, you will find facilities for windsurfing, canoeing, water skiing, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).
  • Hiking and Walking: Apart from the classic Arvanitia promenade, hiking enthusiasts can explore the paths of Acronauplia and Palamidi. Climbing the steps of Palamidi is in itself an excellent exercise with the best reward: the stunning views.
  • Day Trips: Nafplio's strategic location makes it an ideal base for exploring some of Greece's most important archaeological sites. Mycenae, Agamemnon's kingdom, and Tiryns with its Cyclopean walls, are just 20-30 minutes away by car. The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, a world heritage monument with unparalleled acoustics, is also about 30 minutes away. You can learn more about why Epidaurus is famous and its significance.

The Destination by Season

Spring (March - May)

Perhaps the most ideal time to visit Nafplio. The weather is mild, perfect for endless walks through the alleys and archaeological sites. Nature is at its best, with bougainvillea and jasmine filling the city with colours and scents. There are fewer crowds compared to summer, allowing for a calmer and more authentic experience.

Summer (June - August)

Nafplio dons its summer attire and buzzes with life. The heat is noticeable, but the beaches of Arvanitia, Karathona, and Tolo offer a refreshing escape. In the evenings, the Old Town and the coastal promenade fill with people, while bars and restaurants stay open late. It is also the period of the Epidaurus Festival, a unique opportunity to combine your trip with an ancient drama performance.

Autumn (September - November)

An equally wonderful time of year. The sea remains warm enough for swimming until October, while the summer tourist crowds have significantly reduced. The weather is usually mild and sunny, ideal for sightseeing. The autumnal light lends the city a special, nostalgic beauty, making it a paradise for photographers.

Winter (December - February)

Winter in Nafplio has its own distinct charm. The city becomes quieter, more atmospheric, almost private. It's the perfect time for a romantic weekend, enjoying hot drinks in the picturesque cafes of the Old Town, good food in traditional tavernas, and strolls under the winter sun. This is the season to discover the 11 reasons to fall in love with Nafplio in its calmest version.

The region is famous for its citrus fruits, excellent extra virgin olive oil, and wines, especially from the nearby Nemea area. Naturally, fresh fish and seafood are a highlight, especially at the fish tavernas in the harbour. For dessert, Nafplio is famous for its excellent Italian-style ice cream (gelato) which you will find in many spots in the Old Town.

  • Bookings: Especially if you are travelling on a weekend or during peak season, it is advisable to book your accommodation well in advance. The same applies to popular restaurants, particularly for evening meals.
  • Sun Protection: During the summer months, the sun is strong. Don't forget your hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, especially if you plan to visit Palamidi at midday.
