Zagorochoria: Travel Guide, What to See, What to Do and Where to Stay

Why visit Zagorochoria

Zagorochoria is not just a destination, it is an entire world sculpted from stone, nature and history. Nestled in the Pindus mountain range, north of Ioannina, it is one of the most well-preserved and atmospheric traditional complexes in Greece. Its name, of Slavic origin, means "the place behind the mountain" (Zagorje), a name that perfectly captures the sense of isolation and self-sufficiency that characterised the region for centuries. The entire area is part of the Northern Pindus National Park and the UNESCO Vikos–Aoos Global Geopark, which certifies its enormous ecological and geological importance.

Geographically, it is divided into three sections: West, Central and East Zagori. West Zagori, centred around Aristi and the villages of Papigo, is perhaps the most touristically developed, with direct access to the Voidomatis river and impressive views of the "Towers of Astraka". Central Zagori, with villages such as Monodendri, Vitsa, Dilofo and Kipoi, is the heart of the region, famous for its stone arched bridges and direct access to the most popular spots of the Vikos Gorge. East Zagori, less developed for tourism, offers a more authentic and tranquil experience, with villages such as Greveniti and Tristeno. The history and architecture that make Zagorochoria famous are evident in every corner. During the Ottoman rule, the region enjoyed a special autonomous status, allowing residents to prosper through trade and migration. This wealth was reflected in the imposing mansions, intricate churches and, of course, the hundreds of stone cobbled paths and bridges that connected the villages.

A visit to Zagorochoria is a dive into another time. The characteristic Epirus architecture, with its grey stone and slate roofs, harmonises perfectly with the mountainous landscape. Here, time moves more slowly. You will walk on cobbled streets, admire the masterful bridges that defy decay, taste authentic flavours in traditional tavernas and feel the tranquility of a landscape that remains unspoiled. It is a destination that combines adventure with relaxation, history with nature, and appeals to both action lovers and those seeking peace. For a first acquaintance, a three or four-day trip is enough, but to truly explore the richness of the area, you will need at least a week.

How to get there

Access to Zagorochoria is almost exclusively by road, with Ioannina serving as the gateway to the region. The presence of modern motorways has significantly reduced travel time from major cities.

  • From Athens: The distance to Ioannina is approximately 410 km and the journey takes about 4 to 4.5 hours, travelling entirely on the Olympia Odos and Ionia Odos motorways. From Ioannina, you will need an additional 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the village you have chosen as your base (e.g., 30 minutes to Vitsa, 50-60 minutes to Papigo). Detailed information on costs can be found in our guide Athens, Ioannina.
  • From Thessaloniki: The distance to Ioannina is approximately 260 km and the journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours via the Egnatia Odos motorway. The route is extremely comfortable. From there, the same additional time applies to reach the villages of Zagori.

A car is essential for exploring Zagorochoria. Distances between villages may be short in kilometres, but the roads are mountainous, with many bends, requiring careful driving. Without your own vehicle, exploring is almost impossible. If you arrive in Ioannina by plane or KTEL bus, car rental from Ioannina is the best solution. Ioannina KTEL buses operate very few routes to certain villages, but the times are not convenient for tourist use.

What to see

Zagori is a huge attraction in itself. Every village, every bridge, every path has its own unique beauty.

Bridges of Zagori

Perhaps the most iconic feature of the region. These are masterpieces of folk architecture, built by local craftsmen to connect the isolated villages. The most famous are the three-arched bridge of Plakida (or Kalogeriko) near Kipoi, the bridge of Kokkori or Noutsou on the road to Central Zagori, and the bridge of Mitsiou inside the Vikos Gorge, accessible by a short hike from Vitsa.

Vikos Gorge

The deepest gorge in the world in proportion to its width, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Its view inspires awe. The best panoramic views are offered from two points: Oxya viewpoint (5 km paved road from Monodendri) and Beloi viewpoint (accessible with a 45-minute hike from Vradeto village).

Kolymbithres in Papigo

Between Megalo and Mikro Papigo, the Rogovou stream has formed successive natural pools (Ovires) within the smooth rocks. In summer, their icy, crystal-clear waters offer an unforgettable refreshing experience.

Vradeto Steps (Skala of Vradeto)

An impressive stone cobbled path with over 1,200 steps that connected Vradeto (the most isolated village) with Kapesovo, until the modern road was opened. Hiking up or down the steps is a popular hiking route offering stunning views and a glimpse into the region's history.

Drakolimni of Tymfi

An alpine lake at an altitude of 2,050 metres, beneath Mount Gamila peak. Access requires a challenging hike of about 4-5 hours from Mikro Papigo, but the landscape is rewarding. Alpine newts, the "dragons" of local legends, live in its waters.

Activities

Zagori is a paradise for nature and action lovers.

  • Hiking: The trails are countless, from easy one-hour walks to full-day traverses. Crossing the Vikos Gorge (Monodendri to Vikos, 6-7 hours) is the most classic route for experienced hikers. Other options include the Vradeto Steps, the paths to the bridges and the route to Drakolimni.
  • Rafting & Kayak: The Voidomatis, one of Europe's cleanest rivers, is ideal for rafting. The route is usually easy (difficulty level I-II), suitable for beginners or families, and offers a unique perspective of the landscape.
  • Canyoning: For the more adventurous, there are organised excursions for canyoning with ropes and jumps into natural pools.
  • Horse riding: Several farms in the area organise horseback riding tours on forest trails, a wonderful experience for all ages.
  • Mushroom picking: In autumn, the forests of Zagori are filled with dozens of mushroom species. You can join organised excursions with experts to learn the secrets of mushroom picking.

The destination by season

Spring (March - May)

Nature is reborn. Everything is green, the rivers have plenty of water and the meadows are filled with wildflowers. It is the ideal season for hiking and rafting, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

Summer (June - August)

It offers a cool escape from the city heat. Temperatures are mild and evenings are cool. It is the best period for swimming in the Kolymbithres and the Voidomatis, as well as for ascending to Drakolimni.

Autumn (September - November)

For many, the most beautiful season in Zagori. The forests with their beeches and plane trees are dressed in dazzling shades of yellow, red and orange, creating a magical setting. The weather is usually good for excursions and the atmosphere in the villages, with the first fires in the fireplaces, is unique.

Winter (December - February)

The landscape is transformed when covered in snow. The villages take on a fairy-tale appearance, although access to some may be difficult. It is the season of absolute tranquility, ideal for relaxing by the fireplace. If you are lucky and the roads are open, the sight of the snowy gorge is unparalleled. For snow lovers, there are excellent hotels with fireplaces in Zagorochoria that offer warmth and comfort.

3-day itinerary

Day 1: Get acquainted with Central Zagori

Arrival and check-in to a village in Central Zagori (e.g., Vitsa, Monodendri, Dilofo). Afternoon stroll through the cobbled streets of your village and visit the neighbouring, perfectly preserved Dilofo. Dedicate the afternoon to the bridges: start from Kipoi to admire the Plakida bridge and continue towards the Kokkori bridge. Dinner at a taverna in Vitsa or Kipoi.

Day 2: West Zagori and Voidomatis

Head towards West Zagori. First stop in Aristi. Continue to Megalo and Mikro Papigo, enjoying the view of the Towers of Astraka. Walk to the Kolymbithres for a swim (if it's summer) or just to admire the landscape. On your way back, make a detour to Vikos village, from where the view of the gorge and the Voidomatis is stunning. Dinner in Papigo or Aristi.

Day 3: The heart of Vikos and departure

Drive to Monodendri. Walk to the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, built on the edge of the cliff, for a close-up view of the gorge. Then, take the road to Oxya viewpoint for the most panoramic view. On the way back to Ioannina, make a final stop at the Mitsiou bridge. If you have time, a stroll through the attractions Ioannina is famous for is the perfect ending.

What to eat

The gastronomy of Zagori is simple, authentic and based on local products. The hallmark is the famous Zagori pies. You will find dozens of variations: aleuropita (the simplest and most famous), tyropita (cheese pie), chortopita (greens pie), manitaropita (mushroom pie), kolokythopita (pumpkin pie). Be sure to try local meats, such as wild boar stew, baby lamb in a gastra (earthenware pot) or lamb kleftiko. In autumn, mushrooms are celebrated in every form. Accompany your meal with local tsipouro and don't forget to try local cheeses such as galotyri.

Practical tips

  • Drive carefully. The roads are narrow, with many bends and often without guardrails. In winter, always carry snow chains.
  • Dress in layers. Mountain weather changes quickly. Even in summer, a fleece or a windbreaker is essential for the evening.
  • Wear appropriate shoes. Even if you don't plan a long hike, the cobbled streets in the villages can be slippery. Comfortable trainers or hiking boots are the best choice.
  • Book in advance. Especially for weekends, holidays and August, good accommodations sell out quickly.
  • Carry cash. Although most hotels and restaurants accept cards, cash is essential in smaller cafes or for minor purchases.
  • Be aware of signal. Mobile phone and data coverage may be limited or non-existent in some places, especially within the gorges.
