Tirana and the Albanian Riviera: A travel guide to sights, experiences and accommodation
From the museums and neighbourhoods of Tirana to Himara, Butrint and the Ionian coast, a practical guide to planning your trip to Albania at any time of year.
Από Travelo Team

Tirana and the Albanian Riviera are worth visiting for the contrast between a rapidly changing capital and a coastline where the mountains plunge almost straight into the Ionian Sea. A single trip can take in modern history, Ottoman monuments, archaeological sites, stone-built villages and beaches. To explore both without long journeys every day, allow seven to ten days, with two or three in Tirana and the rest in the south.
Three days only allows for a brief introduction, ideally with a car and different arrival and departure points. In summer, the sea takes centre stage, but spring and autumn often make for more pleasant journeys and sightseeing. In winter, focus more on the capital and treat the coast as a place to explore rather than a destination for a beach holiday with all the usual facilities.
Why go
Tirana lies inland in western Albania, on a plain with Mount Dajti to the east. It is not a coastal city and is some distance from the shores usually seen in photographs of the Riviera. This geographical distinction matters: the capital and the south work as complementary parts of a trip, not as a base and an easy day trip nearby.
The city developed during the Ottoman period and became Albania's capital in 1920. Around Skanderbeg Square, different layers of its history come together: the Et'hem Bey Mosque, government buildings, large public spaces and contemporary architecture. Its size makes it possible to walk between several major sights, while cafés are a central part of everyday life.
The long communist period left a particularly strong mark. The bunkers, surveillance sites and the once off-limits neighbourhood of the party leadership are not simply tourist attractions, but opportunities to understand a society that lived in strict isolation for decades. A visit to a museum covering this period adds depth to what you later notice on the streets.
Tirana today has a youthful, outgoing character. In Blloku you will find restaurants and bars, in the New Bazaar area bustling commerce and small shops, and around the artificial lake places to stroll. Rapid construction creates interesting contrasts, but also building sites, traffic congestion and neighbourhoods whose appearance is changing.
The Albanian Riviera stretches along the Ionian coast of southern Albania, with key stops including Dhërmi, Himarë, Porto Palermo and Borsh. Sarandë and Ksamil are often included on the same route, although they have a different character. The coast varies: in some places you will find wide beaches, in others small coves beneath steep slopes.
Inland and in the old settlements, you can see traces of an ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman presence. Butrint brings together several of these successive eras. Meanwhile, the Greek language and ties with the opposite shore are part of life in areas of the south, although this does not mean you will be able to communicate in Greek everywhere.
The great advantage is the variety within a relatively small area. The drawback is that distances on the map do not always reflect actual driving times. For an introduction to the coastline, see also the guide to the Albanian Riviera and its key stops. Choose a few bases rather than changing accommodation every night.
Getting there
Tirana International Airport is the main air gateway. A direct flight from Athens takes around one hour and twenty to forty minutes. From Thessaloniki, when a direct service is available on your dates, the flight takes about an hour. Do not assume services run at the same frequency throughout the year.
From the airport, there is a bus service to the city centre, near Skanderbeg Square, as well as taxis. Allow around thirty to sixty minutes, depending on traffic. Check the current bus timetable and agree the taxi fare before setting off, or use the airport's official service.
If driving from Greece, Kakavia serves routes towards Gjirokastër and central Albania, while Mavromati is convenient for Sarandë. Krystallopigi may be a useful option when setting off from northern Greece. Compare the whole journey, including delays at the border, rather than just the distance.
For a trip focused on the south, there is a ferry connection between Corfu and Sarandë. Depending on the vessel, the crossing takes around half an hour to an hour and a half, excluding border checks. Services are affected by the season and weather. To combine your trip with a stay on the island, consult the practical information on flights from Athens to Corfu and the guide to where to stay in Corfu.
What to see
Skanderbeg Square and Et’hem Bey Mosque
The large central square is the best place to get your bearings. The Skanderbeg statue, the mosque and the Clock Tower reveal different periods in the city’s history. If you visit the mosque, dress modestly and respect prayer times.
Bunk’Art and House of Leaves
Bunk’Art 1 occupies a large bunker on the outskirts, while Bunk’Art 2 is centrally located and focuses on the mechanisms of repression. The House of Leaves explores the history of covert surveillance. Choose one or two, allowing time to read the exhibition information.
The Pyramid and New Bazaar
The Pyramid, originally associated with the legacy of Enver Hoxha, has been transformed into a contemporary public and educational space. The New Bazaar, or Pazari i Ri, is ideal for a stroll among stalls, shops and restaurants. Both stops show how the city’s spaces are being repurposed.
Dajti and the Grand Park
The Dajti cable car climbs above the plain, offering sweeping views in clear weather. Check operating days and wind conditions. Within the city, the Grand Park around the artificial lake is an easier option for a leisurely walk.
Dhërmi and Old Himarë
In Dhërmi, distinguish between the old village on the hillside and the beachfront area. In Himarë, combine the seafront with the old town and castle higher up. The uphill walks reward you with views, but you will need sturdy footwear and water.
Porto Palermo and Borsh
The castle at Porto Palermo dominates a small peninsula and is linked to the history of Ali Pasha. Further south, Borsh stands out for its long beach and mountain backdrop. Both make worthwhile stops on a route that ventures beyond the busiest resorts.
Butrint and Ksamil
Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines archaeological remains with a lagoon landscape. Allow at least two hours for your visit. Nearby Ksamil is known for its small coves and islets, but its beachfront gets particularly crowded in peak season.
Activities
In Tirana, walk from the centre to Blloku, sample the city’s everyday coffee culture and spend an afternoon by the lake. A guided history tour helps you connect buildings with events. For hiking on Dajti, you will need suitable equipment, an up-to-date weather forecast and a route that matches your experience.
On the Riviera, you can swim, kayak or take a small-boat trip wherever local operators offer these activities. Check life jackets, sea conditions and boarding points. Gjipe Beach can be reached on foot or by sea, depending on conditions. Avoid exploring the gorge if rain is forecast.
If you also cross to the other side of the Ionian Sea, the guide to beaches, sights and activities in Corfu will help you vary your experiences rather than repeat similar stops.
When to visit
Spring
This is a good time for museums, archaeological sites and exploring villages. The landscape is green, but rain is still possible. The sea is cool, and many seasonal businesses along the coast have yet to open.
Summer
The sea becomes the main reason to visit. In Ksamil and on popular beaches, expect crowds, difficulty parking and higher prices. Book accommodation early, visit Butrint in the morning and keep walking to a minimum around midday.
Autumn
In early autumn, the sea often remains pleasant for swimming, though summer weather is not guaranteed. Later, rainfall increases and fewer seaside services are available. This is a good season for combining city visits, food experiences and a road trip.
Winter
Daily life continues in Tirana, while the Riviera is noticeably quieter. Confirm that your accommodation is open and heated, and check for nearby restaurants. You may encounter snow or ice in the mountains, so choose your route according to current conditions.
3-day itinerary
Day 1
Start early in Tirana with Skanderbeg Square and a museum of modern history. Continue to the New Bazaar for a meal, visit the Pyramid and spend the evening in Blloku. This itinerary assumes you arrived the previous day or very early in the morning.
Day 2
Drive to Himara, allowing around four to five hours, possibly longer with traffic and stops. Leave the afternoon free for the old town or a beach, depending on the season. Avoid adding too many stops along the way.
Day 3
Head towards Saranda, with a brief stop at Porto Palermo. Choose either a visit to Butrint or some relaxed time on the coast. Ideally, stay overnight in the south and leave the following day. If you need to return to Tirana that evening, skip Saranda and head back from Himara.
What to eat
Try byrek, a pastry with various fillings, tavë kosi with lamb and yoghurt, and fërgesë, a dish made with peppers, tomatoes and cheese that comes in several variations. Qofte, small grilled patties or meatballs, are often served with salad and bread. The cuisine has Balkan and Ottoman influences, but varies from place to place.
On the coast, look for fish and seafood, and ask whether prices are per portion or by weight. A simple meal may cost around €8-18 per person, while a more substantial dinner may cost €20-40, with considerable variation depending on the area and what you order. Try trileçe for dessert and make any allergies clear.
Where to stay
In Tirana, the city centre is convenient for first-time visitors, while Blloku suits those who want restaurants and nightlife nearby. Find out more about the areas to stay in Tirana. In the south, Himara is convenient for the central stretch of coast, while Saranda is well placed for Butrint and the ferry. The guide to where to stay in Saranda explains the differences between the areas.

Practical tips
- Documents: Check the current entry requirements for your nationality and travel document, as well as the documents required for children.
- Money: The currency is the lek. Carry cash for small businesses and choose to pay in the local currency when using a card.
- Mobile phone: Do not assume that European roaming at no extra charge applies. Check your data package or consider a local SIM.
- Car: You need valid insurance cover for Albania and, for hire cars, written permission for cross-border use. If you are bringing a vehicle from the island, see the guide to car hire in Corfu, but confirm permission to take it abroad and on a ferry separately.
- Driving: Aim to travel in daylight. Allow for winding roads, local traffic and limited parking at popular beaches.
- Time: Albania is one hour behind Greece. Pay attention to the local times shown on ferry tickets.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need in total?
Seven to ten days gives you time to combine destinations properly. With less time, stay in fewer places and avoid trying to cover the entire coast.
Do I need a car?
Not in Tirana, but it is particularly useful on the Riviera. Without one, choose a single base and check local bus services or transfer options.
What is the best time of year to visit?
For sightseeing, choose spring or autumn. For swimming, summer offers the most reliable conditions, but also more traffic and higher prices.
Is this a suitable trip for children?
Yes, if you keep accommodation changes to a minimum and daily journeys short. Check beach access, water depth and shade before choosing a base.
Can I visit the Riviera on a day trip from Tirana?
It is not recommended for the main beaches on the southern coast. The long journey leaves too little time at your destination.
Is the coast worth visiting in winter?
Yes, for quiet drives, scenery and visits to archaeological sites. You will need to be flexible because of the weather and confirm accommodation, dining and transport options in advance.
