Kastoria: Travel guide, what to see, what to do and where to stay

Why Visit Kastoria

Kastoria is not just a beautiful city; it is an experience. Built on a narrow peninsula that seems to embrace the waters of Lake Orestiada, it offers views that look like they've come straight out of a painting. The lake's mirror doubles its beauty, reflecting the imposing mansions, Byzantine churches, and the colours of the sky that change dramatically throughout the day and seasons. The feeling of being constantly by the water, surrounded by the serenity of nature and the splendour of a rich history, is what makes Kastoria irresistible. A trip of three or four days is ideal to explore its main attractions without rushing, to walk through the traditional neighbourhoods, enjoy a tour of the lake, and feel its unique pulse.

The city offers a rare balance between urban landscape and nature, history and contemporary life. It is a destination that satisfies every type of traveller: the nature lover who will be captivated by the lake's ecosystem, the history enthusiast who will discover a Byzantine treasure around every corner, and the traveller simply seeking relaxation and atmospheric strolls. Kastoria is not exhausted by a quick visit; it invites you to slow down, breathe, and become part of its own, distinctive reality.

Why Go

Kastoria is a place blessed by geography and sculpted by history. The city owes its existence and unique identity to Lake Orestiada, one of the most beautiful in Greece, which forms the core of its life and aesthetics. It is surrounded by the mountains of Vitsi and Grammos, creating a landscape of imposing beauty that changes appearance with the seasons, from the snow-capped mountains of winter to the vibrant greens of spring. This close relationship between city and lake shaped an urban fabric that spreads harmoniously across the peninsula, with the traditional neighbourhoods of Doltso and Apozari preserving centuries of architectural heritage intact.

Kastoria's history is deeply rooted in time, with the first traces of habitation dating back to the Neolithic era, as revealed by the Lakeside Settlement of Dispilio. However, the city experienced its greatest prosperity during the Byzantine period, when it became an important military and religious centre of the empire. The legacy of this era is visible in the more than 70 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches scattered throughout the city, adorned with rare frescoes. The Church of Panagia Koumbelidiki, with its distinctive dome, is an emblem of this period.

Later, during Ottoman rule, Kastoria emerged as a global furrier centre. Kastorian fur merchants travelled throughout Europe, acquiring wealth and a cosmopolitan outlook, which they brought back to their homeland. The result of this economic prosperity is the impressive mansions that dominate the neighbourhoods of Doltso and Apozari. Built in Macedonian architectural style, with their characteristic 'sachnisi' (projecting upper floors) and rich interior decoration, these mansions testify to an era of glory and are living museums of folk architecture. Therefore, the reasons Kastoria is famous are many, from its unparalleled natural beauty to the art of furriery and its Byzantine heritage.

Today, Kastoria is a modern city that respects its past. Visitors can wander through the cobbled streets, admire the mansions, visit its museums, and also enjoy a coffee or a meal overlooking the lake. Its character is twofold: on the one hand, the serenity and nostalgic atmosphere of the old town and, on the other, the vibrancy of the commercial centre and the young people studying here. This combination of old and new, nature and culture, is what makes Kastoria a destination unlike any other.

How to get there

Access to Kastoria is easy, mainly by road, thanks to the modern road network of Egnatia Odos which makes it accessible from the country's major urban centres.

By car:

  • From Athens: The distance is approximately 480 kilometres and the journey takes about 5 hours. The route follows the Athens-Lamia National Road, continues towards Karditsa, Trikala, Kalabaka and Grevena, and from there via Egnatia Odos reaches Kastoria.
  • From Thessaloniki: The distance is approximately 190 kilometres and the journey takes less than 2 hours. The route is entirely via Egnatia Odos (A2/E90), with the exit for Kastoria/Siatista leading directly to the city.

By KTEL (intercity bus): Kastoria KTEL operates daily routes connecting the city with Athens, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Kozani and other cities in Greece. The bus journey from Athens takes about 6-7 hours, while from Thessaloniki it takes about 2.5 hours.

What to see

Kastoria is full of sights that combine nature, history and culture. Every corner holds a small surprise.

Lake Orestiada and Lake Circuit

The lake is the soul of the city. The lakeside road, about 7 kilometres long, is ideal for walking, running or cycling. Along the way you will encounter ancient plane trees, fishermen with their boats ("plaves"), Dalmatian pelicans, swans and a rich birdlife. The walk offers constantly changing, enchanting views of the city and the surrounding landscape.

Dolcho and Apozari Districts

Dolcho (south lakeside) and Apozari (north lakeside) are the two traditional districts of Kastoria. Walking through their narrow, cobbled streets, you will feel like you are travelling back in time. Here you will admire the imposing Macedonian mansions of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the Nerantzi Aivazi mansion (housing the Folklore Museum) and the Basara mansion, with their characteristic timber-framing and elaborate facades. Many of them have been restored and operate as museums, guesthouses or cafes.

Byzantine Churches

Kastoria is often called "Little Mount Athos" due to the enormous number of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches. Particularly notable is Panagia Koumbelidiki (11th century), the only domed church in the city, which is also its symbol. Other important churches include Taxiarchis Mitropoleos, Agioi Anargyroi and Agios Stefanos, all with excellent frescoes covering a period of several centuries.

Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa

A short distance from the city, along the lake circuit route, lies the historic Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa (11th century). Its catholicon is decorated with impressive frescoes, both inside and out. Its location, in the shade of a giant plane tree next to the lake, is simply enchanting.

Dragon's Cave

Very close to the Mavriotissa Monastery, you will find the entrance to the Dragon's Cave. This is an impressive, accessible cave with 7 underground lakes, 10 chambers and rich stalactite formations. The guided tour through the specially designed routes and floating bridges is a unique experience.

Lakeside Settlement of Dispilio

A few kilometres south of Kastoria, in the village of Dispilio, a faithful recreation of a Neolithic lakeside settlement has been created. Visitors can walk among huts built on stilts in the lake, learning about the way of life of the people who lived here 7,500 years ago. It is an excellent educational experience, especially for families.

Byzantine Museum of Kastoria

Housed in a modern building on top of the city's hill, it hosts one of the richest collections of Byzantine icons in Greece, dating from the 12th to the 17th century. A visit to the museum is essential to understand the artistic and spiritual grandeur of Byzantine Kastoria.

Kastoria Aquarium

The largest freshwater aquarium in the Balkans hosts endemic and indigenous fish species from the lakes and rivers of Greece. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the unseen underwater world of the region.

Activities

Kastoria and the surrounding area offer a wealth of activities for nature and adventure lovers.

  • Water activities on the lake: The Kastoria Nautical Club offers rowing and canoe-kayak lessons. You can also rent pedal boats or take a ride on the tourist boat for a different perspective of the city from the water.
  • Hiking and cycling: The lake circuit is the classic and most popular route. For the more adventurous, there are trails in the surrounding mountains, such as Vitsi, which offer panoramic views of the area.
  • Skiing and winter sports: Approximately 22 kilometres from the city, on Mount Vitsi, there is a small but organised ski resort, ideal for beginners and families.
  • Birdwatching: Lake Orestiada is an important wetland and protected area of the Natura 2000 network, hosting over 200 bird species, including endangered Dalmatian pelicans.
  • Excursions: Kastoria is an ideal base for excursions to nearby destinations of unique beauty, such as the magical Prespes and the beautiful stone village of Nymfaio, offering a complete experience in Western Macedonia.

The destination by season

Kastoria is a destination that enchants its visitors every season of the year, with each one lending it a different charm.

  • Spring: Nature is reborn and the area is clad in green. The lake circuit is at its best, with trees in blossom and birds creating a lively soundtrack. The weather is ideal for hiking and exploring the countryside.
  • Summer: Although mountainous, Kastoria offers a cool escape from the heat of the south. The days are long, ideal for boat trips on the lake, water sports and relaxing evenings in the lakeside tavernas and cafes.
  • Autumn: For many, Kastoria's most beautiful season. The leaves of the trees take on thousands of shades of yellow, red and orange, creating a dreamlike, almost melancholic landscape. The light mist that often covers the lake in the morning adds to the atmosphere of mystery.
  • Winter: Kastoria transforms into a fairytale, winter setting. The lake often freezes at its edges and the town is dressed in white. The warmth from the fireplaces in the mansion-guesthouses and cafes, the view of the snow-covered mountains and the proximity to the Vitsi ski resort make it a top winter destination. You can look for hotels with fireplaces in nearby Nymfaio for an even more atmospheric stay.

3-day itinerary

Day 1: First impressions and Doltso atmosphere

Upon arriving in Kastoria, settle into your accommodation and begin exploring from the heart of the old town. Dedicate the afternoon to walking through the cobbled streets of the Doltso district. Admire the architecture of the mansions, visit the Folklore Museum to get a taste of the life of old merchants and enjoy a coffee in one of the atmospheric shops in the square. As the sun sets, walk along the southern lakeside promenade and choose one of the lakeside tavernas for your dinner.

Day 2: Lake circuit and Byzantine heritage

Start your day with the circuit of the peninsula. You can do this on foot (approximately 1.5-2 hours), by bicycle or by car. The route under the plane trees is enchanting. Make a stop at the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa and immediately after at the Dragon's Cave. At midday, visit the Lakeside Settlement in Dispilio. In the afternoon, climb the town's hill to visit the Byzantine Museum. End your day with a drink in the Apozari area, enjoying the view of the illuminated town.

Day 3: Apozari, shopping and departure

On the morning of the last day, explore the northern district, Apozari, with its own beautiful mansions and Byzantine churches. Climb up to Profitis Ilias for a panoramic photo of the town. Then, head down to the commercial centre of Kastoria for a stroll through the shops, where you can find fur exhibitions and local products. Before heading back, enjoy a final meal with local flavours.

What to eat

Kastoria's cuisine is based on the products of the lake and the surrounding mountainous land. Don't miss trying:

  • Lake fish: Carp is king, but you'll also find wels catfish, perch, and roach, grilled or fried.
  • Giant beans: The famous Kastoria and Prespes beans, baked in the oven with tomato sauce, are a national dish.
  • Makalo: A traditional dish with meatballs in a light, white sauce of flour and garlic.
  • Pies: As throughout Macedonia, pies are highly celebrated. Try the local 'trahanopita' (a type of savoury pie with fermented wheat pasta) or 'kolokythopita' (pumpkin pie).
  • Wild mushrooms: If you visit the area in autumn, you'll find excellent dishes with wild mushrooms from Grammos and Vitsi.
