On the slopes of Mount Kyllini, specifically in Megali Zireia, in the Peloponnese, we find this beautiful village, which belongs to the municipality of Xylokastro and comprises three settlements. Kato Trikala, located at an altitude of 900 metres, Mesaia Trikala at 1000 metres, and finally Ano Trikala, which reaches an altitude of 1100 metres.
It is a traditional settlement, in fact, the oldest in the region, as there is evidence of human habitation since prehistoric times. There is a theory that the name Trikala comes not only from the three settlements but also from the three 'goods' the area offers: wine, oxygen, and water, which are pure and unspoiled.
Trikala Korinthias is a wonderful winter destination, just 12 kilometres from the Zireia athletic ski centre on the Kyllini plateau. There, you'll find a wide variety of accommodation, from charming traditional guesthouses to warm and welcoming chalets.
Ano Trikala is a traditional settlement with stone-built mansions, many of which have now been converted into guesthouses. The air, due to the altitude, will rejuvenate you, and you'll find many springs with pure water.
Around the stone-paved square, there are many traditional cafes where you can enjoy your coffee or a beverage.
In Mesaia Synoikia Trikalon, you'll find more hotels compared to the other two settlements, as well as countless dining options. It is the least picturesque but also the most modern district of the area.
Kato Trikala boasts the most beautiful and picturesque square with its two large, old plane trees. Around the square, you'll find traditional tavernas and cafes. Very close by is the village's largest hotel, the Grand Chalet, which offers luxurious accommodation.

When is the best time to visit Trikala Korinthias?
It's a place you can visit all year round, as there are activities for every season, given that both the Zireia ski centre and the beautiful Lake Doxa are very close by.

How to get to Trikala Korinthias
If you are driving
The distance from Trikala Korinthias to Athens is 145 km, which you can easily cover in about an hour and a half.
You can drive your vehicle by following the Athens – Corinth provincial road and taking the exit for Xylokastro.
After Xylokastro, heading towards Patras, follow the signs, and after 24 kilometres, you will reach Trikala Korinthias.
If you're coming from Thessaloniki, you'll need to cover a relatively long distance to Athens and then follow the road mentioned above to Trikala Korinthias.
If you want to go by KTEL (bus)
Daily bus services run from Athens to Xylokastro. Services start every morning at 06:10, then at 07:30, and the next one departs at 08:40. For the rest of the day, buses depart from Athens for Xylokastro every hour until 22:10 in the evening, which is the last service.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, there is a municipal transport service that can take you to the village of Trikala. Unfortunately, for all other days, there is no alternative means of transport.
If you want to go by train
The nearest station is located in Kiato, 30 minutes from Trikala Korinthias. From there, you can continue either by bus or by taxi. The journey from Athens to Kiato takes one hour and twenty minutes.

For dining in Trikala Korinthias, there are plenty of options that will surely satisfy your demands. You'll find everything from beautiful restaurants offering a different take on the dishes they create, to traditional tavernas and meze places where you can enjoy homemade flavours.
Visit Dekleris's grill house in Ano Trikala for the most delicious meats. The lamb chops are the taverna's speciality, combining good prices and excellent food quality.
The traditional restaurant «Opos Palia» in the Mesaio settlement of Trikala stands out with its exquisite dishes, excellent taste, and presentation, and of course, good wine.
Finally, «Hayati» in the Kato Trikala settlement is a classic traditional taverna where you can enjoy 'psomotyri' (bread and cheese), kokoretsi, and the traditional 'kioupi'.

The Monastery of Agios Vlasios
In Ano Trikala, you'll find the beautiful Monastery of Agios Vlasios, which dates back to the 17th century. It is open only a few hours daily, specifically from 13:00-16:00. To enter, you must be appropriately dressed.
Hermes' Cave
In the area of Zireia, on the western side of the Flambouritsa gorge and at an altitude of approximately 1,700m, lies Hermes' Cave. Mythology places the birth of the god Hermes and his first feats in this steep cave. This cave offers the view admired by visitors from the Monastery of Agios Vlasios.
It's worth noting that the cave cannot be visited without experience and equipment. Also, the cave is home to many bats, with several species endangered.
Activities in Trikala Korinthias
Jeeping
One of the best experiences you can have in Trikala Korinthias is jeeping. These are off-road or on-road routes that you can traverse with your vehicle – which doesn't necessarily have to be a Jeep. It's a unique driving experience that is gaining more and more followers.
Horse riding
In the village of Rethi Korinthias, very close to Trikala, you will find the Free Horse Riding Centre.
For children, there are ponies with which they can ride, always accompanied by the instructors at the centre.Adult horse riding enthusiasts can enjoy a magical ride on the centre's trails through nature.
Archery
At the same horse-riding centre, you'll also find other activities, including archery.Test your aiming skills at the special facilities.
Mountain Bike
If cycling is your passion, don't miss the opportunity to rent a bike and explore the trails your own way.
Paintball
Suitable for all ages, paintball will rejuvenate you. Especially if you are a large group, it's the best way to spend your morning. The paintball facilities are also located at the horse riding centre.
Hiking
Hiking is one of the best things you can do in Trikala. There are many organised trails leading to the peak of Zireia. Of course, you can always discover your own routes too.
It's very important not to forget the necessary equipment, i.e., your athletic clothing and shoes, water, and your camera to capture the magnificent landscape of the area.
Along the way, you might encounter various animals such as horses, cows, and foxes. Always keep a safe distance.
The Zireia athletic ski centre
Just 12 km from the village of Trikala, you'll find the Zireia athletic ski centre.
There you can engage in a plethora of activities, provided, of course, you visit the area during the winter months.
You can take ski lessons with an instructor, and you'll also find more challenging slopes for experienced skiers.
Sledges are available for rent for children, while adults can enjoy a fun snowmobile ride on the snowy slopes.
If, of course, you're not interested in all these activities, you can enjoy a warm coffee at the chalet, which offers the most beautiful mountain views.
Hiking trails also start from the ski centre, leading towards the Flambouritsa gorge, Hermes' cave, and Lake Dasiou.
Lake Doxa
Lake Doxa is located in the Feneos valley, approximately an hour away from Trikala Korinthias, and at an altitude of 900 metres amidst the mountain peaks!
It is an artificial lake that is only a few years old, having been created in the late 1990s.
At Lake Doxa, you'll find plenty of activities to do, such as hiking and cycling.
In the centre of the lake, there is also the chapel of Agios Fanourios, which is easily accessible on foot or by car.
If you find yourself in the area, don't forget to visit the distinct village of Feneos, which is very close by.
