A Trip to Skopelos

Skopelos is an enchanting destination, beloved by both local residents and international visitors alike. In recent years, and especially after the production of the film "Mamma Mia", visits to Skopelos – and indeed to all the Sporades islands – have rapidly increased.

How to get to Skopelos

You can reach Skopelos either by booking flight tickets to Skiathos and from there taking a ferry to Skopelos (there are 3-4 daily ferries that run the Skiathos-Skopelos route, as part of the Thessaloniki-Sporades, Volos-Sporades, Piraeus-Sporades, Glyfa-Sporades itineraries). Skiathos airport is a small regional airport that just about serves the needs of the Sporades. Flight tickets are affordable and there are daily flights to and from the island.

Another way to reach Skopelos is by ferry, as mentioned above. Ferries depart from either the port of Volos, Glyfa, or Piraeus. Since 2016, catamaran routes from Thessaloniki have resumed. This means the connection between Skopelos and Northern Greece takes less than 3 hours.

Skopelos Beaches

Skopelos is renowned for its clear waters on all the island's beaches. It has the advantage that if there's wind and waves on one side, the sea on the other side will be calm. The most popular beaches on the island are Stafylos and Panormos.

It is located very close to Skopelos port – just 4.5 km away.

This is one of the most popular beaches with good sand, clear waters, and an area with sunbeds and a canteen.

Panormos Beach

Panormos is the next most popular beach in Skopelos – or for some, the most popular! It mainly attracts younger crowds to the beach bar side (to the right as you face the beach) and families to the rest. Panormos beach is approximately 12.5 km from Skopelos port, reached by a beautiful drive through nature and trees.

Agios Ioannis – Kastri Beach

Another well-hidden beach is Agios Ioannis beach in Kastri. It is located among rocks and its approach is a bit steep. It has umbrellas (very few for the crowds it attracts) and a canteen serving coffees, refreshments, cold food, etc. To access the beach, you pass to the left of the canteen and turn left downwards after 100 metres.

The little church of Agios Ioannis is the church where the wedding in the Mamma Mia film took place – visit it and climb its steps to the top. The view from up there is worth any fatigue!

Milia Beach

Milia beach is located close to

Kastani (Mamma Mia beach) and is calmer, with a partly organised section. It has a beach bar, sunbeds, and a solitary canteen. The sea is beautiful, and the small island directly opposite dominates the view. Be careful of the slab in the shallow waters, as it is particularly slippery in some places!

Other popular and beautiful beaches on the island of Skopelos include Kastani (Mamma Mia beach), Agnontas, Limnonari, Neo Klima. Generally, all beaches in Skopelos have clear blue waters that deepen relatively quickly. Rent a car or scooter and explore the entire island! If you have the opportunity to rent a boat, you will find excellent, hidden beaches accessible only by water!

Panagitsa tou Pyrgou Church

In Skopelos port, immediately after disembarking from the ferry, you will see a beautiful, gleaming white and imposing little church at the very end of the corner. This is Panagitsa tou Pyrgou. Climb the steps and you'll see the entire port of Skopelos from above!

Where to eat in Skopelos

The food in Skopelos is quite tasty and well-prepared, provided you know where to eat. We mention 2 restaurants that we personally tried, with no affiliation (advertisement, etc.).

The tavern "To Delfini tis Skopelou" stands out for its affordable dishes and excellent quality. You will find it on Panormos beach.

The tavern "Mouses" in Skopelos port offers a premium location by the sea with very good quality food and exquisite dishes.

Activities in Skopelos

There are plenty of activities to do in Skopelos, such as watersports on several beaches, sailing, boat trips to neighbouring islands (Skiathos-Alonnisos), etc.

We recommend taking a "cruise" with one of the boats you will find in the port, to discover hidden beaches and visit Alonnisos. We do not recommend, based on a personal visit, the "GLASS BOTTOM" as the experience was not positive.
