A romantic and unique castle town

Monemvasia belongs to the prefecture of Laconia, is approximately 100 kilometres from Sparta, and took its name from the composite words “Moni” and “Emvasis”, indicating that the town was accessible only through a single entrance.

Indeed, those who have visited Monemvasia will have realised that access from the mainland to the rock located in the Myrtoan Sea is via a narrow strip of land and a bridge.

Monemvasia consists of two towns: the one located on the rock, divided into Upper and Lower Town, and the one outside the castle, which has seen exceptional tourist development in recent years.

The capital and centre of Laconia

Sparta, the capital of the prefecture of Laconia, is built on the eastern slopes of Mount Taygetus, above the ruins of ancient Sparta, and extends to the banks of the Eurotas river.

It is approximately 225 km from Athens. The Municipality of Sparta also includes the villages of Gounaris, Kalama, Kokkinorachi, Magoula and Rivioti, and the settlements of Agia Eirini and Agia Kyriaki.

The city's climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters and cool summers, making Sparta one of the cities with the most ideal climatic conditions.

Historical overview

It began to be inhabited during the Neolithic era, around 6,000 BC, when the Leleges people settled in the area. According to mythology, the leader of the Leleges was Lelex, whose children were Therapne, Polykanon, and Eurotas.

The latter had a daughter, Sparta, after whom the city was named. Sparta flourished during antiquity, resulting in the creation of a powerful state on both military and commercial levels.

The peak of its glory began from 404 BC onwards, when the city emerged victorious from the Peloponnesian Wars, after its leader, Leonidas, and his 300 companions had previously sacrificed themselves at Thermopylae.

From the 3rd century BC, its decline began, and it was subjugated to other peoples (e.g., Macedonians and Achaeans).

A base for excursions!

Excursions – From Sparta, you can take nearby excursions, either with your own vehicle or by public transport. A visit to the castle town of Mystras, with its 13th-century churches that seem untouched by time, is considered essential.

Nature lovers can organise an excursion to Taygetus. From Sparta, go to the village of Anavryti or Trypi and from there explore the National Park.

Near Trypi, a climbing park has been created in collaboration with the Sparta Mountaineering Club, which attracts many enthusiasts of the sport. Those with off-road vehicles will discover wonderful routes.
