Sri Lanka Travel Guide: Tea, Temples, Beaches and Accommodation

Sri Lanka is one of the most densely packed islands on the planet in terms of experiences. In less than 500 km from north to south, you'll encounter ancient capitals, mountains with tea plantations, national parks teeming with elephants and leopards, temples adorned with frescoes, and coastlines perfect for surfing amidst palm trees.

It's an ideal destination for a ten to fourteen-day trip, with journeys that are attractions in themselves, such as the train ride from Kandy to Ella. In this guide, you'll find what to see, how to plan your route, what to eat, and where to stay at each stop.

The suggested accommodations cover Colombo, Bentota, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Kandy, and Ella, allowing you to book your entire itinerary directly.

A few words about Sri Lanka: geography, history, and identity

Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean, southeast of India, with approximately 22 million inhabitants. Its history dates back over 2,500 years, featuring Buddhist kingdoms in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, followed by Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial rule, which left behind forts, churches, and tea plantations.

Geographically, it is divided into three zones. The lowland coasts have a tropical climate and beaches, with the western and southern coasts being the most tourist-friendly. The central mountainous region, around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Ella, sits at an altitude of 1,000–2,000 metres, offering a cool climate, waterfalls, and endless tea plantations. The northern and eastern sides are drier, home to national parks like Yala, Wilpattu, and Minneriya.

The climate is regulated by two monsoons. The western and southern coasts along with the mountains experience their best period from December to March, while the eastern coast, with Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, shines from May to September. This means Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, provided you choose the right side of the island.

Food and flavours in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan cuisine is more intense and aromatic than Indian, based on rice and curry: rice served with five or six small dishes of vegetables, dhal lentils, fish or chicken, chutney, and coconut sambol. Also try hoppers, string hoppers, kottu roti, lamprais, and fresh king coconut juice.

Tea is a national symbol and worth enjoying at a plantation, combined with a factory visit. A meal at a local restaurant costs 3–7 €, at a tourist restaurant 10–20 €, and at a boutique hotel 25–45 €. Say “not spicy” if you can't handle hot food, as the local spice level is high.

When to go to Sri Lanka

For the western and southern coasts and the mountains, the best period is from December to March, with sunshine and calm seas. For the eastern coast, May to September is ideal. The cultural triangle can be visited year-round, but the heat in April and May is intense.

Whale watching in Mirissa runs from November to April, while safaris in Yala are best from February to July when animals gather at the water sources. The two monsoons don't mean continuous rain, but short, heavy showers.

PeriodWeatherWhat to expect
December–MarchHot, sunny in the southBest time for southern beaches and mountains.
April–MayVery hot, humidTransitional period, good prices, hot in the lowlands.
May–SeptemberDry in the eastIdeal for Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, and safaris.
October–NovemberRainyLow season across the island, cheaper accommodation.

Travel and practical information

Bandaranaike International Airport is located near Negombo, approximately 35 km from Colombo. There are no direct flights from Athens, so you'll have a stopover in Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, or Istanbul, with a total travel time of 11–15 hours.

Travel is by train, bus, tuk-tuk, and private driver. The train is cheap and scenic, but slow, and for the Kandy–Ella route, it's worth booking a seat in a reserved carriage in advance. A private driver for the entire trip costs 45–70 € per day and is the most comfortable option for a two-week itinerary. You'll need an electronic ETA before arrival, light clothing, insect repellent, and modest attire for temples.

Suggested 12-day itinerary

  1. Days 1–2
Arrive in Negombo or Colombo, settle in, explore city markets and temples.
  2. Days 3–5
Cultural triangle: Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, safari in Minneriya.
  3. Days 6–7
Kandy: Temple of the Tooth, botanical gardens, evening ceremony.
  4. Days 8–9
Train to Nuwara Eliya and Ella, tea plantations, Little Adam's Peak.
  5. Days 10–12
Yala for safari and conclude on the south coast: Mirissa, Unawatuna, Galle.

Useful tips before you travel

  • Book reserved seats on the Kandy–Ella train at least two weeks in advance.
  • Obtain your electronic ETA before departure; do not rely on getting it upon arrival.
  • Pack insect repellent with DEET and consult a doctor about vaccinations before your trip.
  • At temples, remove your shoes and hat, cover your shoulders and knees.
  • Do not swim in unknown beaches when there are waves; currents can be strong.

Points of interest: detailed guide

Sigiriya Rock

The 5th-century fortress on a 200-metre monolith, with frescoes of maidens, giant lion's paws, and the ruins of the palace at the summit. The ascent requires 1,200 steps and about an hour and a half; start at 07:00 before the heat sets in.

Opposite, Pidurangala rock offers the best photo of Sigiriya at a third of the cost and with fewer crowds.

Kandy and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The last royal capital, with its central lake and the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple, which houses a tooth relic of the Buddha. Puja ceremonies take place three times a day with drumming and are the best time to visit.

Dress in white or modest clothing, with shoulders and knees covered, and remove your shoes at the entrance.

Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa

Two ancient capitals in the cultural triangle. Anuradhapura boasts enormous dagobas and the sacred Bodhi tree, over two thousand years old, while Polonnaruwa features a more compact archaeological site that can be explored by bicycle in three hours.

Dambulla and cave temples

Five caves containing 150 Buddha statues and frescoes on rock ceilings, offering views of the plains. It's on the road between Kandy and Sigiriya and takes about an hour including the ascent.

Ella and the Nine Arch Bridge

A mountain town at 1,040 metres, featuring tea plantations, Ravana Falls, Little Adam's Peak (a one-hour walk), and the stone bridge where the train passes. The climate here is cool and pleasant year-round.

Nuwara Eliya and the tea plantations

The colonial summer capital at 1,900 metres, with British buildings, gardens, and tea factories that offer guided tours and tastings. Nights can drop to 8 degrees, so pack a cardigan.

Galle

The 17th-century Dutch fort on the south coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with walls overlooking the sea, a lighthouse, boutique hotels, and cafes. Sunset on the ramparts is the best time.

Beaches of the south and east

Unawatuna, Mirissa, Hiriketiya, and Tangalle in the south for December to April; Arugam Bay, Pasikuda, and Trincomalee in the east for May to September. Surfing, whale watching, and turtles are the main draws.

Adam's Peak

A sacred mountain reaching 2,243 metres, involving a night ascent of 5,500 steps to witness the sunrise from the summit. The pilgrimage season is December to May, when lighting is active and tea stalls are available along the route.

Colombo

The capital is often overlooked, but it's worth half a day: Galle Face Green with kites and street food, the colonial Fort, Gangaramaya Temple, Pettah market, and modern rooftop bars.

Museums, art, and culture

National Museum of Colombo

The country's largest collection, featuring the royal throne of Kandy, statues, palm-leaf manuscripts, and colonial relics. Air-conditioned and a good introduction to the island's history.

Ceylon Tea Museum

Near Kandy, housed in an old factory, with 19th-century machinery, the history of British plantations, and tastings on the top floor with views.

Archaeological Museums of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa

Small museums at the archaeological sites, with models, artefacts, and explanations of the hydraulic works that still impress engineers today.

Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum

Near Galle, featuring ethnographic objects, masks, tools, and the author's house within a tropical garden. A quiet and enlightening stop.

Parks, nature, and outdoor spaces

Yala

The most famous national park, with the highest leopard density in the world, elephants, buffalo, and crocodiles. Safaris take place in the morning or afternoon by jeep, costing 60-90 dollars for two. It gets busy during the dry season.

Udawalawe

The best park for guaranteed elephant sightings, with over 500 individuals. Nearby is a care centre for orphaned elephants, where they are fed at scheduled times.

Horton Plains and World's End

A plateau at 2,100 metres, with a nine-kilometre, three-hour trail, the sheer cliff of World's End, and Baker's Falls. Start at 06:00 before the mist rises.

Sinharaja and Minneriya

Sinharaja is the island's last large tropical rainforest with endemic birds, while Minneriya hosts the famous 'Gathering', where hundreds of elephants congregate around the lake in August and September.

Whale watching in Mirissa

From December to April, boats go out to spot blue whales and sperm whales, costing 40-60 dollars per person. Choose a company that keeps its distance and doesn't chase the animals.

Activities and experiences

The Kandy - Ella train

Considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world: seven hours through tea plantations, over bridges, and amidst mist. Book a second or first-class seat in advance, or stand by the door of a second-class carriage (without a seat) for the classic photo, with caution.

Surfing and diving

Weligama and Hikkaduwa for beginners in the south, Arugam Bay for experienced surfers in the east. A two-hour lesson costs 25-35 dollars. Wreck diving is available from Trincomalee and Kalpitiya.

Ayurveda and yoga

Sri Lanka has a strong Ayurvedic tradition, with treatments starting from 30 dollars and multi-day retreats available in the south. Many accommodations offer complimentary morning yoga.

Cooking and tea

Cooking classes featuring rice and curry in family homes cost 15-30 dollars and are among the most heartwarming experiences of the trip. At plantations, you learn the difference between teas from various altitudes.

Hiking and cycling

Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock are easy, Knuckles Range is more challenging, and Horton Plains offers a plateau hike. Cycling around Tissa Lake and through the rice paddies of Polonnaruwa is flat and easy.

Turtle and bird watching

At Rekawa, turtles emerge to lay eggs at night during organised visits, while Bundala and Kalametiya Lake's wetlands are home to flamingos and dozens of other species.

Where to eat: specific suggestions

Rice and curry

The national meal: rice with five to ten small servings of vegetable curries, dhal lentils, coconut sambol, brinjal moju, and optionally fish or chicken. At a local shop, it costs 400-800 rupees and is extremely filling.

Hoppers, kottu, and roti

Hoppers are thin crepes made from rice flour, often with an egg in the centre; kottu is finely chopped roti with vegetables and spices, identifiable by the rhythmic sound of the knives; and coconut roti accompanies everything.

Southern seafood

Fresh fish, prawns, and crab curry in Negombo and Mirissa. A full dinner with fish costs around 8-15 dollars, while crab at well-known Colombo restaurants can be significantly higher.

Fruits and sweets

Pineapple, papaya, rambutan, mango, wood apple, and the enormous jackfruit. Try buffalo curd with kithul palm honey, one of Asia's finest desserts.

Tea and coffee

Ceylon tea is served strong with milk and sugar, at a minimal cost. In the highlands, try single-origin teas from plantations, while Colombo offers modern specialty coffee shops.

Spicy food and special diets

Local food is spicier than you might expect; ask for less chilli. Vegetarians have abundant options, as rice and curry is fundamentally plant-based.

Nightlife and drinks

Southern beaches

Hiriketiya, Mirissa, and Unawatuna feature beach bars with live music, full moon parties, and a relaxed vibe. The season runs from December to April.

Colombo

Rooftop bars at hotels, clubs in Colombo 3, and casinos. It's the only city with substantial nightlife, with prices noticeably higher than in the provinces.

Practicalities

On the full moon day, Poya, each month, alcohol sales are prohibited, and many bars close. Enquire at your accommodation and stock up in advance if interested.

Markets and shopping

Tea and spices

Buy tea from a factory or from recognised stores with the Ceylon Tea seal; also look for Ceylon cinnamon, black pepper, and cardamom. Horticultural cooperatives offer better quality than tourist shops.

Precious stones

Ratnapura is famous for sapphires. Only buy from shops with laboratory certificates and receipts, never from casual vendors offering 'bargains'.

Handicrafts

Wooden masks from Ambalangoda, batik, linen fabrics, ceramics, and coconut products. Prices are low, and bargaining is gentle.

With children: what works best

With children on the island

Elephants in Udawalawe, turtles in Rekawa, train rides in the highlands, shallow beaches in Unawatuna and Pasikuda, and surfing lessons for teenagers. Sri Lankans are extremely friendly towards children.

Practicalities with children

Distances can be tiring due to slow roads: don't plan more than three long journeys in two weeks. Bring insect repellent, sun cream, and basic medicines, and prefer accommodations with a swimming pool.

Day trips

Sigiriya with Dambulla and Minneriya

A classic day from Habarana or Sigiriya: climb the rock early, visit Dambulla caves around midday, and an elephant safari in the afternoon.

Ella with Nine Arches and Ravana

Walk the bridge according to train schedules, visit Little Adam's Peak for sunset, and swim at Ravana Falls or the Diyaluma pools.

Galle with Unawatuna and Koggala

Explore the fort in the morning, swim in Unawatuna, see stilt fishermen in Koggala, and take a boat trip on the lagoon with its islands.

Kandy with Peradeniya

Visit the Temple of the Tooth for the afternoon puja, Peradeniya Botanical Garden with its giant palm avenue, and a traditional Kandy dance performance.

When to go: month by month

Two monsoons

The island has two distinct seasons: the south and west are best from December to April, the east and north from May to September. Thus, Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, provided you choose the correct coast.

Highlands

In the highlands – Kandy, Ella, and Nuwara Eliya – the weather is cool year-round, with temperatures between 15-25 degrees and frequent afternoon mist. Morning hours offer the best visibility.

Peak season and prices

The high season in the south is December to January, when prices double. May and October are transitional months with rain but also the best deals.

Suggested itineraries by duration

Ten days

Two nights in Sigiriya with Dambulla and a safari, two in Kandy, two in Ella via train, one in Yala or Udawalawe, and three on the southern beach with Galle. This is the most balanced programme for a first visit.

Fifteen days

Add Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, Nuwara Eliya with Horton Plains, Mirissa for whale watching, and two days in Hiriketiya or Tangalle for relaxation at the end.

One week

With seven days, choose either the cultural triangle with Kandy and Ella, or the south coast with Galle and one national park. Don't try to do everything, as the roads are slow.

Practical travel information

Visa and entry

An electronic ETA is required before arrival, with a cost that has changed in recent years and an online application process. Check the official government website, as many intermediary sites circulate with inflated prices.

Transport

A private driver with a car costs 50-70 dollars a day and is the most comfortable solution for a ten-day trip. Trains are cheap and scenic but slow; buses are even cheaper and crowded; tuk-tuks with the PickMe app are convenient for short distances.

Money and prices

The currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee. Cards are accepted at hotels and large restaurants, but you'll need cash for tuk-tuks, markets, and small shops. 10% tips are appreciated, and a service charge is often included on many bills.

Health and precautions

Hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus vaccinations are recommended, with no malaria risk currently. Use insect repellent for dengue fever, drink bottled water, and be aware of strong currents on beaches where lifeguards are often absent.

Temples and etiquette

At Buddhist temples, enter without shoes and a hat, with shoulders and knees covered. Do not photograph yourself with your back to a Buddha statue, and Buddha tattoos are considered offensive, an issue that has caused real problems for visitors.

Animals and ethical tourism

Avoid elephant riding and orphanages with chained animals. Choose national parks with jeeps that maintain distance, visit the Udawalawe Transit Home for elephants, and participate in organised visits to turtles with biologists.

Budget and saving

Typical prices

Rice and curry 2-4 dollars, dinner at a tourist restaurant 8-15, guesthouse 20-40 per night, boutique hotel 60-150, safari 60-90 for two, private driver 50-70 per day. A ten-day trip for two people with good accommodation and a driver typically comes to 1,500-2,200 dollars, excluding flights.

How to save

Eat at local eateries, use trains for scenic routes, stay in family guesthouses with breakfast, share a safari with another couple, and travel during transitional months. The value for money is excellent across all categories.
