Seychelles

The Seychelles are located over 2,000 kilometres from the eastern coast of Kenya and are a true paradise. If there's one place in the world where you should abandon everything and live in a beachfront shack, it would be the Seychelles. With perfect beaches, crystal-clear waters, and numerous islands to choose from, they offer all the solitude one could need. Many of the islands are uninhabited, providing an unparalleled sense of peace and tranquility.

This group of 115 islands offers something for everyone who loves life by the sea. It is an ideal place to visit due to its rich marine life and many natural and marine parks, two of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Although the Seychelles can be quite expensive, you can visit them on a budget if you plan ahead. The best time to visit is during the cooler period from May to September, when rainfall is lower.

Maldives

The Maldives, located in the Indian Ocean, comprise a chain of 1,000 islands (of which only 200 are inhabited, and just 5 have a significant population). This country is made up of coral atolls barely above sea level. During the 2004 tsunami, many of these islands were completely destroyed. The government has since built flood barriers to mitigate the effects of future tsunamis, though the Maldives will be among the first countries to feel the pressure of climate change.

These small coral islands offer excellent diving, snorkelling, and idyllic white-sand beaches. Private resorts fill the islands, and holidays here are quite expensive, as the Maldives are among the most sought-after luxury destinations in the world. Fortunately, you can at least get here cheaply, as Thai Air Asia offers affordable flights to and from Thailand (you can find return flights for around $300!).

The best time to visit the Maldives is from November to May, when the weather is cool and dry. From June to October, it's monsoon season, and the weather is wetter and warmer.

Endheri Sunset Dhangethi (Dhangethi) – An affordable hotel near the beach with free bicycles and essential amenities like flat-screen TVs and air conditioning.

Ko Lipe, Thailand

Ko Lipe, located in southern Thailand, is a semi-remote island and one of my favourite destinations. The month I spent there remains one of my most cherished memories. Friendly locals bring in fresh catches daily for amazing seafood, as the island's waters teem with life. Accommodation is still basic, although more places now offer 24-hour electricity. However, development will gradually erode this paradise, so visit soon!

Near this island is a small islet that offers excellent opportunities for snorkelling. You might even spot reef sharks. The warm waters and fine sand beaches kept me there for over three weeks, and they will do the same for you. Visit the island between November and March for the best weather and fewest tourists. From May to October, it's monsoon season, and the island largely closes down. The best way to get there is by boat from Pak Bara.

Bali and the Gili Islands

Bali, also known as the “Island of the Gods”, is a destination rich in cultural heritage, magnificent beaches, and enchanting landscapes. The Gili Islands, located near Bali, are renowned for their crystal-clear waters and tranquil atmosphere, offering ideal conditions for relaxation and diving.

This tourist Mecca is voted one of the best islands in the world every year. The surfing is excellent, the food simply amazing, prices are low, the parties are fantastic, and the locals are among the friendliest in the world. There's also a volcano for hiking and many temples to explore. Clearly, Bali has it all. 

However, Indonesia has much more to offer than just Bali. The nearby Gili Islands are another incredible island getaway. Both destinations are perfect for a more active tropical holiday, and the weather remains relatively stable year-round (though from April to October the weather is a bit drier). Bali and the Gili Islands are so close that you can visit both on your trip, fully enjoying this idyllic corner of the world.

Fiji

Located in the South Pacific Ocean, this country has approximately 322 islands, although less than a third are inhabited. Most of the action happens on the western islands, but wherever you go, it's paradise here. Whenever the name Fiji is mentioned, visions of perfect postcard-like beaches and tropical ocean dance in people's minds. There's a good reason for this – because this place is one of the most incredible destinations in the world. And with so many islands to offer, you're sure to find one you love.

It is a popular destination for young people and honeymooners, with something for everyone – diving, sailing, snorkelling, whale watching, tranquil luxury, and much more! Most young and budget travellers head to the Yasawa Islands, known for their cheap accommodation, affordable transport, and late-night parties. Temperatures remain mostly stable throughout the year, with cyclones occurring between November and January.

Tahiti, French Polynesia

You know those mesmerising photos of tropical bungalows built over water? That's Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia, an archipelago of 118 islands spread across 6,400 square kilometres of ocean. It's an expansive, remote area with towering volcanic peaks, rugged cliffs, and emerald lagoons, offering some of the most stunning scenery in the South Pacific.

Tahiti is one of the world's top honeymoon destinations, offering absolute serenity and romance. Its name is synonymous with tropical paradise. Here you can relax in the sun, go diving, enjoy exquisite seafood, and take a morning dip straight from your bungalow.

The island is expensive and caters to a wealthier tourist clientele, though there are ways to visit on a budget. Visit the Museum of Tahiti and its Islands to learn more about Polynesian culture. Le Marché Papeete, the public market, is the place to try local cuisine and buy souvenirs. The weather is tropical year-round, with cooler temperatures from May to October.

Big Island, Hawaii

Hawaii's largest island is located over 4,000 kilometres off the west coast of the USA and offers countless activities. What sets it apart from other islands is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Home to two of the world's largest and most active volcanoes, it's a UNESCO World Heritage site and an international biosphere reserve, due to its unique natural value. In the park, you can explore the volcanoes, walk through old lava tubes, and watch new lava flow into the ocean.

The island also offers numerous waterfalls, excellent snorkelling and diving, and the lush wilderness of Waipi'o Valley, once home to Hawaiian royalty. The Big Island has it all. It's Hawaii – you can't go wrong!

The wet season is from October to March, with cooler temperatures. However, the weather can vary greatly between islands, so there's always something unexpected.

Cook Islands in the South Pacific

This island group in the South Pacific is quite a distance from the usual tourist destinations and is less visited than some of its neighbours. Comprising 15 islands spread across nearly 2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean, these small islands were named after James Cook, the intrepid explorer who “discovered” them (even though islanders had lived there since 1000 AD).

With limited amenities, this is the ideal place to find your inner castaway and escape modern life. Rarotonga is the largest and most popular island, but it's worth visiting other islands if you can. Once you leave the main island, you'll have kilometres of beaches and crystal-clear waters (perfect for snorkelling, diving, swimming, and sea kayaking) almost to yourself!

The weather is similar to the rest of the region, with warm and humid temperatures year-round.

Curaçao, Caribbean

Located in the Caribbean Sea and belonging to the Netherlands, this island is truly enchanting. Voted one of the best islands in the Caribbean, Curaçao feels like a tropical Holland. The island's capital, Willemstad, is a vibrant city with brightly coloured Dutch architecture and an old town designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

As the largest and most populous of the Dutch Antilles, Curaçao boasts a rich social life and plenty of activities. It's the hippest island in the region, attracting younger travellers. Here you can enjoy the beaches, soak up the sun, and party into the night. It might not offer complete privacy, but it exudes romance and fun.

The weather is consistent year-round, always warm and usually sunny. If it rains, it's between November and January. And don't worry about hurricanes – the island is below the hurricane belt!

Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Located on the east coast of Malaysia, they consist of two main islands, Perhentian Kecil (“Small Perhentian”) and Perhentian Besar (“Big Perhentian”). Both are covered in palm trees, boast long beaches, and feature crystal-clear blue waters. Despite its smaller size, Kecil is the busier of the two, offering cheaper accommodation and more activities. Besar has more resorts and caters to families, honeymooners, and travellers with a somewhat larger budget!

There isn't much to do here, and visitors typically lounge on the beach all day, recovering from all-night drinks. It's the perfect place to hang a hammock – the name Perhentian means “stopping point”, which is fitting as many travellers who come here end up staying longer than expected. The islands are also ideal for divers and snorkelers, as the reefs and clear waters host a wide variety of corals, sea turtles, sharks, and colourful fish.

The strong monsoon season restricts when you can go (visit the islands between March and October). During other periods, it's preferable to head to Thailand, where the weather is more favourable.

Bermuda

The oldest colony of Great Britain, Bermuda, is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Unfortunately, it's also quite expensive! The presence of many wealthy and powerful individuals, as well as banks and businesses flocking here for tax reasons, has driven up prices, with resorts primarily catering to a luxury clientele. However, this doesn't mean it's not worth visiting!

While you'll need a respectable budget, if you give Bermuda a chance, you'll find some of the most beautiful beaches in all of North America and the Caribbean (Church Bay, Elbow Beach, and Chaplin Bay). The locals are incredibly friendly, and you can enjoy world-class dining. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy, including exploring caves, numerous hiking trails, and world-class snorkelling and diving (Bermuda is known as the shipwreck capital of the world, with over 300 shipwrecks).

Barbados

Barbados is a vibrant island in the West Indies, an insular region spanning both the North Atlantic and the Caribbean. Bridgetown, the capital and largest city, is one of the region's nightlife hotspots, so if you're looking to party until the early hours, this is the island for you!

As in Bermuda, here you'll find amazing beaches and caves. You'll also discover some world-class surfing. The food here is incredible, with both expensive, delicious meals and affordable local dishes.

Although there's abundant luxury here, you can visit Barbados on a moderate budget, making it one of the most accessible islands in the Caribbean.

Best place to stay in Barbados

Isla de Providencia (Old Providence)

Providencia lies between Costa Rica and Jamaica, though it belongs to Colombia. Isla de Providencia consists of two smaller islands: Providencia and Santa Catalina, covering a total of just 22 square kilometres. It's a natural paradise, as Providencia is the focal point for the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO marine protected area, and is home to the Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Park.

Unlike its luxury neighbours in the Caribbean, here you'll only find more affordable hotels and guesthouses. Although everything has to arrive by boat or plane, it's not excessively expensive. No non-local can own property, which keeps the island simple and authentic. For a more rustic, non-touristy getaway, this might be the island for you!

The San Blas Islands, Panama

Panama is an underrated destination in Central America, and that includes the San Blas Islands. This collection of 378 islands is popular for sailing and boat trips, while also offering some resorts for a more luxurious stay. 

Most of these islands are uninhabited and under the control of the indigenous Guna people, thus retaining a rustic character that makes them ideal for off-grid getaways. Accommodation here is simple, with huts, hammocks, and tents, while their crystal-clear waters are perfect for sailing, diving, and snorkelling.

A sailing trip is the best thing you can do. Most charters cost around $180-200 per person, per day.
