Wandering through Ohrid

In ancient times, the city was known as Lychnidos, or “city of light”. Although inhabited since the Iron Age, the city as we see it today was largely built between the 7th and 19th centuries.
With its well-preserved houses, cobbled streets, and lake views, one of the best things to do in Ohrid is simply to wander around. As the country has no sea or other water sources, locals flock to Ohrid in summer to enjoy the sun and swim in the lake. Although the city is very touristy, it manages to maintain its local feel and is a pleasant place to explore on foot.
Besides its traditional houses, Ohrid is also known for its churches. The small city of around 40,000 inhabitants is home to no less than 365 churches – one for every day of the year.
Ohrid's most important attractions
Although a small city and region, it has many attractions you'll want to explore. Whatever time of year you choose to visit Ohrid, don't miss the opportunity to explore the city itself, not just the lake and beaches.
The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid
Near the Upper Gate of Ohrid's Old Town stands one of the oldest buildings in the area. This amphitheatre, built during the Hellenistic period in the 3rd century BC, was later used by the Romans for gladiatorial contests.
The theatre has been restored and continues to host contemporary musical events as part of the annual Ohrid Summer Festival. Although not the most impressive structure, it remains interesting that such an ancient construction is surrounded by modern residences.
Behind the theatre is the Upper Gate, an attraction worth seeing. Ohrid, as a fortified city for much of its history, boasted impressive walls 3 kilometres long, and this gate served as one of the main entry points for centuries.
Samuel's Fortress

Visible from all over the city, Samuel's Fortress was built on top of a hill approximately 100 metres above the lake. According to the Greek historian Polybius, the fortress already existed from the time of Philip II, King of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great), in the 4th century BC.
The fortress remained in use until relatively recently and today is one of modern Ohrid's top tourist attractions. Entry costs 80 MKD (Denars), which is 1.30 euros. The fortress is closed on Mondays.
Samuel made Ohrid his capital during his reign and from here was in continuous conflict with the Byzantine Empire.
There isn't much to see inside, but you can walk along the walls to enjoy the breathtaking views of Ohrid and the lake. Be sure to arrive early to avoid the crowds.
Plaosnik
The path downhill through the forest to the Plaoshnik area can be a little tricky, but follow the signs to “Basilica” or use the Maps.me app.
Considering how compact Ohrid is, it's amazing to find a secluded forest area right in the heart of the old town. In this area, between Samuel's Fortress and the Church of Saint John at Kaneo, lies the area known as Plaoshnik.
Archaeological finds discovered here date back to the 12th century BC. Other important finds from here date from the early Iron Age, the Hellenistic era, and the early Roman period, followed by the Byzantine and Ottoman eras.
Within the area, there are many important attractions such as the 5th-century basilica, known for its mosaics, and the Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon, believed to date from the time of Saint Clement himself in the 10th century. To complete your visit to Plaoshnik, be sure to visit the National Museum as well.
The Church of Saint John at Kaneo

Built in the 13th century, the Church of Saint John at Kaneo is arguably Ohrid's most photographed landmark. But this is more due to its picturesque lakeside setting. To enter the church, foreign visitors will need to pay an entrance fee (100 MKD, or 2 euros).
It is worth exploring the Kaneo Beach area around the church. The pebble beach is nestled among rocks and there are many good restaurants.
The Church of Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia is Ohrid's most impressive church – both inside and out. It was built in the 11th century on the foundations of an even older Christian building and for a long time served as the Patriarchate and Archbishopric of Ohrid.
Later, during the conquest of Ohrid in the 15th century, the Ottomans converted the building into a mosque, whitewashing the vibrant frescoes.
Entry costs 100 MKD for foreign visitors.
Saint Naum Monastery
To visit this monastery, you will need to take a boat, which is a 1.5-hour journey. You can buy tickets directly at the pier in the main square. They cost 600 Denars / 9.74 euros per person, and boats depart at 10 a.m. every day.
It is an old chapel with many peacocks roaming freely in the courtyard. The excursion also includes a short boat ride to the freshwater springs. The cost was 200 Denars / 3.25 euros per person and was definitely worth it.
The boat departs at 3:00 PM, and until then, you can do many things depending on the season, such as swimming at the beach, sunbathing, or visiting a local tavern.
Ohrid Museums
The city hosts several unique museums worth visiting, all easily accessible on foot from the old town centre.
National Workshop for Handmade Paper
Dedicated to Ohrid's paper-making tradition, it contains one of only two functional replicas of Gutenberg's printing press in the world.
Inside, you can enjoy a demonstration of the process, and the guide will be happy to answer any questions you have. Entry is free, but after such a comprehensive explanation, it will be hard to leave empty-handed.
The National Museum of Ohrid
Also known as the Robev Family House Museum, this three-storey museum is a must-visit during your stay in Ohrid. Divided into two parts, it functions as both an ethnographic and an archaeological museum.
In some sections, you'll find well-preserved rooms of the former Robev house, a wealthy merchant family who built this house in 1863. Numerous artefacts from the late Ottoman period, costumes, and local artworks, including some astonishingly intricate woodcarvings, are also on display.
The Icon Gallery
Another popular attraction in Ohrid is the Icon Gallery, located just outside the Church of Sveta Bogorodica Perivlepta. You can find it near the Upper Gate.

Ohrid Pearls
Ohrid is famous for its pearls, and the reason is that many celebrities and heads of state own and are photographed wearing these precious pearls. Even Queen Elizabeth had strands of Ohrid pearls.
It is reasonable to ask, “If Ohrid is a lake with no oysters, how can it have pearls?” Well, that's because Ohrid pearls are not real pearls but rather a unique type of imitation pearl with a secret manufacturing process.
In fact, there are only two families in the entire world who know how to make Ohrid pearls, and their shops are located right next to each other.
The story is quite interesting. In 1924, a Russian serving in Ohrid knew a way to make artificial pearls using the scales of a fish endemic to the lake. This fish is called Plashica, and besides this one ingredient, nobody knows the secret to making these pearls.
You can buy pearl jewellery in many shops, but the best place to go is either to the shops of the Filevi family or the Talevi family. These are the two families who know the secret to making Ohrid pearls. If you buy from other shops in the area, you are likely to end up with jewellery made in China.
