Lake Kerkini: The artificial lake that brings life to the Serres plain!

The lake has revitalised the area, as from its creation in the 1930s until today, it has gained significant tourist interest, attracting visitors from all over Greece and the Balkans.

Its natural beauty is enhanced by diverse flora and fauna, and it serves as a major attraction for birdwatchers from all over the world, as you can encounter over 300 species in its waters.

Besides birds, the lake's ecosystem is home to small mammals and river fish.

Let's not forget that during the summer months, you'll also find many buffaloes in the shallow waters of the lake, feeding on water lilies and water chestnuts.

Lake Kerkini is located in the Serres regional unit and was created in 1932 to meet the needs of the hydroelectric dam, whose waters originate from the Strymon River.

Why the creation of the Lake was deemed necessary

The Strymon River frequently flooded during the autumn and winter months, thus destroying crop yields and the entire agriculture of the region.

This was the impetus for launching this very large and significant project, aimed at controlling the flow of the Strymon's waters. Thus, the hydroelectric dam was also created.

One of the primary goals of the project was also the production of electricity.

Over the years, the gradual release of water led to the formation of Lake Kerkini. Depending on the season and the amount of water it holds, the lake can cover an area ranging from 55,000 stremmata to as much as 72,000 stremmata during the summer months. Furthermore, its depth in winter reaches 6 metres at its deepest point, increasing to 10 metres in summer.

This depth and its fluctuations can be easily observed at the pier where the plaves – wooden boats with a capacity of up to 20 people – are located for tours. We will discuss more about the activities offered by the area further on.

The dam, therefore, houses a hydroelectric power plant that uses the flow of water passing through it to generate electricity. The amount of energy produced is mainly influenced by the water level and rainfall.

Ecological significance of Lake Kerkini

Lake Kerkini has immense ecological importance as it constitutes a vital wetland for wild animals and birds.

Since 2006, the lake has been part of the Natura 2000 network, which means it serves as a refuge for many species of plants and animals, including rare and endangered species.

 

The birds of the lake

Lake Kerkini serves as an intermediate stop for migratory birds, as it lies along the Europe-Africa migration route they follow. Birds from Europe and Asia use Kerkini as a resting and refuelling site during their journey to Africa for breeding.

There is a wide variety of birds that can be encountered throughout the year. In spring, millions of birds pass through the lake, and you will mainly find pelicans, cormorants, and herons, while in winter you might even spot the rare great white pelican, characterised by its pinkish colour.

In summer, it is highly likely to see flamingos in the shallow waters of the lake and along its shores, as well as various species of ducks, geese, swans, and even the very rare ferruginous duck.

The lake's biodiversity has made it an ideal breeding ground, especially for pelicans, which have formed colonies.

Aquatic life

The lake's waters teem with aquatic life, including many species of fish such as perch, wels catfish, carp, common carp, channel catfish, and pike. These fish are a significant food source for the lake's birds.

The lake is surrounded by wetlands and reeds, where many species of amphibians, reptiles, and insects can be found. These wetlands act as natural filters that contribute to the water's quality and clarity.

 

Preservation of its richness

The ecological importance of the lake has driven efforts to preserve its ecosystem. Local authorities continuously collaborate on managing the lake's water levels, monitoring birds, and managing the wetlands.

 

Activities at Lake Kerkini

Visitors to the lake have a plethora of activities to choose from, beyond birdwatching.

 

# Boat trip: This is the best way to explore the lake's calm waters. See the pelicans up close and capture wonderful photos and videos as they spread their large wings and fly low over the lake. We recommend Mr Iasonas, who provides various facts about the lake and the area during the tour. The boat trip with the 'plava' lasts approximately 45 minutes, and the cost is €10 for adults and €5 for children. Children under 5 are not charged.

# Kayaking: The calm waters of the lake are ideal even for those with no prior experience.

# Fishing: Fishing is perhaps the most popular activity offered by the lake. Make sure to obtain a fishing permit and adhere to the 2 kg catch limit set by the authorities.

# Hiking and walking around the lake: Explore the picturesque trails and observe the area's fauna while enjoying the unique lake views.

# Cycling: The area is particularly suitable for mountain biking, and if you don't have your own bicycle, you can rent one.

# Horse riding: Horseback tours are also available in the area. Near the pier, a ride lasts approximately 15 minutes and costs €7 per person. Small children ride with an escort.

# Photography: If photography is your hobby, then you have found your paradise. There are so many beautiful things to capture with your lens!

# Thermal baths: In the nearby village of Promachonas, there are facilities where you can relax and rejuvenate in the natural hot springs.

# Stargazing: If you choose to stay overnight in the area by selecting accommodation near the lake, don't miss the opportunity to enjoy the starry sky. Due to low light pollution, conditions are ideal.

# Birdwatching: As one of the country's most important bird observatories, Lake Kerkini attracts tourists from all over the world. So, equip yourself with binoculars and enjoy the birds in their natural habitat.

The villages surrounding the lake

An introduction to the lake would not be complete without a visit to the neighbouring villages. You will be able to discover the local culture, cuisine, and the traditional way of life of the inhabitants.

# Sidirokastro: A traditional Greek village boasting a folklore museum that you can visit. Local products you can taste include honey, cheese, and wine.

# Lithotopos: Located on the eastern bank of Kerkini, here you will find many accommodations with stunning lake views.

# Kerkini: The village after which the lake is named is located on its northern bank. This is where the facilities for most of the activities mentioned above, such as horse riding and cycling, are found.

# Promachonas: Near the border with Bulgaria, Promachonas is known for its thermal baths and natural hot springs.

# Ano Poroia: Located on the eastern slopes of Mount Belles, it is known for its traditional festivals and stunning lake views.

# Aetos: A very popular destination for wine lovers, as it features excellent wineries that primarily produce red wine.

# Akritochori: A small village on the eastern banks of the lake, mainly suitable for fishing.

 

Where to stay at Lake Kerkini

Since the area is vast and your stay will be short, the accommodation you choose should be situated in a location that allows you to make the most of it.

Fortunately, in the area, you will find accommodation options for all budgets, with prices starting from €50 per night for a double room and reaching up to approximately €100.

In Kerkini village, you will find 2 hotels, while many more are located in Lithotopos. Some accommodations are also available in Ano Poroia and Sidirokastro.

 

Gastronomy at Lake Kerkini

At the area's tavernas, don't miss the chance to savour fresh buffalo meat. You'll find buffalo steaks, sausages, burgers, liver, and, of course, the unique kavourmas.

Also, choose to try the lake fish, such as carp, which is usually served fried.

For desserts, choose the unique kazandibi, made, of course, with buffalo milk. Akanes is another local sweet, resembling Turkish delight, with a fresh butter flavour and an almond filling at its centre.

The traditional Serres ouzo, with its delicate aroma and smooth taste, stands out as it is produced in copper stills using charcoal.

 

How to get to the area

# By road: Lake Kerkini is located 53 km from the centre of Serres, while if you are starting from Thessaloniki, you will need to cover 95 km. From Athens, the distance is significantly longer, at almost 600 km.

# By KTEL bus: There are 3-4 daily routes that reach the eastern part of the area, Iraklia and Sidirokastro.

From Serres, there is a connection only via Sidirokastro, and this is limited to morning hours only.

# By train: From Thessaloniki to Serres and vice-versa, there are 2 daily services. One of these is an intercity service, meaning it only passes through cities and makes stops in Rodopoli and Sidirokastro.

The second service makes stops at all stations, as it is the only one serving the local settlements.
