How they celebrate Easter in Corfu, Chios, and other Greek islands!

Easter in Greece is a period filled with a unique magic. Unlike other parts of the world that focus on Christmas and New Year, Greeks look forward to Easter all year round, anticipating a true celebration. 

There are many places across the country known for their particular local customs. However, there are some places that stand out for their traditions during Holy Week.  

# Corfu

Easter in Corfu is a unique experience not to be missed. The island's 18 philharmonic orchestras, the castle's cannons, and the locals combine to create a formal yet festive atmosphere. On Good Friday, the procession of the Epitaph takes place, with the bands playing pieces by Albinoni and Chopin's marche funèbre, while on Holy Saturday, the liturgy at the Church of Agia Paraskevi in Spianada Square is accompanied by fireworks that turn night into day.

The most impressive tradition occurs the following day, when on the morning of Holy Saturday, locals throw 'botides' (clay pots filled with water) from windows and balconies onto the street. This happens immediately after the First Resurrection service and the procession of Saint Spyridon's relic to the sound of cannons. This tradition is said to originate from a psalm verse "you will smash them to pieces like a potter's vessel." This tradition symbolises the noise of Jesus's Resurrection and excites all present. If you haven't experienced it, it's difficult to understand, but those who have describe it as a unique experience that cannot be put into words. Walk through the 'kantounia' (narrow streets) of the town, grab a table at one of the picturesque cafes in a narrow alley between the five-storey buildings, stroll through Liston and Spianada squares, and savour every moment of spring and Easter on the island.

# Chios

On the island of Chios, the traditional 'rouketopolemos' (rocket war) is a true feast for the eyes. This custom, believed to have originated during the Ottoman occupation, is revived every year on the night of the Resurrection (Holy Saturday) as a battle between the two parishes of Vrontados town: Agios Markos and Panagia Erithiani. From early evening until late at night, thousands of rockets are launched towards the bell tower of the opposing church, creating an extraordinary spectacle that illuminates the night sky. Although it sounds dangerous, the churches and surrounding buildings are specially prepared for the event, attracting many tourists who wish to experience this unique event.

Head to the Holy Monastery of Agios Makarios on the slopes above Vrontados to watch the rocket war from a safe distance.

On Good Friday, be sure to visit Mesta, a well-preserved mediaeval village, and follow the funeral procession of the Epitaph, representing the tomb of Christ.

# Messinia

Kalamata, the capital of Messinia, is globally renowned for its olive oil, but during Easter, the city stages its own rocket war, locally called 'saitopolemos'. In Kalamata, this 'dance of fire' takes place on Easter Sunday. 

If you plan to visit the area during Easter, book your accommodation several months in advance, as cheap rooms in Kalamata sell out very quickly!

# Leonidio, Arcadia

This small but charming town located in Arcadia (Peloponnese) offers one of the most dreamlike spectacles you can witness during the Resurrection of Christ on Holy Saturday: 

Colourful paper lanterns are lit and float over the town, illuminating the night sky. It is believed that local sailors encountered this Asian tradition while travelling abroad and brought it back home.

# Patmos

Known as "the island of the Apocalypse" or "the Jerusalem of the Aegean," Patmos is where Saint John the Theologian is said to have written the Book of Revelation of the Bible. Here, the most significant moments of the Easter celebrations include the re-enactment of the Last Supper and the ceremony of the Washing of the Feet on the morning of Maundy Thursday in the central square of Chora.

# Santorini

During Greek Easter, Santorini comes alive. The village of Pyrgos on Good Friday takes centre stage and becomes an impressive experience. During the procession of the Epitaph through the streets, thousands of small lanterns are scattered and lit in the houses and fields of the area, even around the castle, creating a unique spectacle. It is a magnificent night parade and has even been recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the most beautiful Good Friday parade.

# Crete

Crete is a beloved destination for visitors to Greece and an island you must visit during the Greek Easter period. The island's capital, Heraklion, takes on a special dimension on Easter Monday, as many Cretans "celebrate their dead" and bring food and drink to the graves of their relatives, having a picnic there. This is a tradition that honours the dead and celebrates the resurrection of Christ.

# Rhodes

The mediaeval spirit of Rhodes perfectly matches the enchanting atmosphere of Easter. On Good Friday, one of the most impressive Epitaph processions takes place in the alleys of the mediaeval city, with Agios Fanourios passing through the streets, offering a unique experience. The Epitaph procession in Kremasti is also a remarkable event. The custom of 'vournies' in Agios Isidoros, which begins on Holy Saturday and concludes on Easter Monday, also offers a unique experience. According to this, the unmarried men of the village participate in various activities, such as cutting large logs for the 'kalafounou' fire on Holy Saturday and hanging the effigy of Judas in the village square. On Easter Monday, the 'court' decides on offenders, while eager grooms offer their final participation in the burning of Judas. This is followed by the court's judgment, with fines for bachelors who do not comply with the rules, while the rest are subjected to the 'vourna' custom, where they are pushed into a trough of water. 

# Mykonos

Mykonos, although not having the same festive atmosphere as Corfu or Rhodes, perfectly combines Easter with entertainment. Here, one can find both traditional Christian rituals and a light-hearted atmosphere that highlights summer. Visitors can visit the Paleokastro monastery and the Cathedral of Alefkandra for the Holy Week ceremonies. In Chora, the procession of the Epitaph ends at Gialos, offering a unique experience. On Easter, the burning of Judas at the Cathedral of Chora is accompanied by fireworks that illuminate the sky in red, yellow, and blue hues.

# Hydra

If you prefer a smaller island, Hydra is an ideal choice. One of the most impressive customs here is the Marine Epitaph in Kamini, where the procession of the Epitaph ends in the sea, first passing through the cobbled alleys, to sanctify the waters. It is essential to visit the island on Good Friday to not miss this unique experience. On Easter, after the traditional meal, it concludes with the burning of a Judas effigy in the harbour, creating a fireworks spectacle that paints the sky in vibrant colours.
