Excursion to Palaios Panteleimon in Pieria

A captivating winter destination unlike many others you will find across Greece. This village is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages you will ever visit. Time stops there, and you have a unique opportunity to enjoy a wonderful landscape full of trees and vegetation, a magnificent view as the village boasts the best panoramic view of the Thermaic Gulf, and above all, you will enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the village.

The locals of the village are young and very hospitable people who have prepared the village and their shops with great care. The village is buzzing with life, especially during the morning and midday hours on weekends. Many travel agencies organise day trips to Palaios Panteleimon from the surrounding areas and beyond.

So, at midday, you will see the village full of people, both in the cafés and in the tavernas around the plane tree in the main square with the church! This picture changes completely in the afternoon hours when the coaches depart, and after eight in the evening, you hear absolutely nothing in the village.

In the evening, don't miss the opportunity to take a stroll towards the village entrance near the car park and admire the wonderful view and the amazing starry sky. It is an excursion you will enjoy like no other, and you will long to go back.

Palaios Panteleimon route

Palaios Panteleimon is located in the prefecture of Pieria, on the slopes of Mount Olympus and at an altitude of 700 metres from the Thermaic Gulf. Following the Athens – Thessaloniki national road towards Thessaloniki, after the Platamonas junction, turn right at the sign.

The distance from Thessaloniki to Palaios Panteleimon is just 105 km, which makes it an ideal destination for a relaxing weekend and for day trips.

The distance from Athens to Palaios Panteleimon is quite a bit longer at 404 km, and you will certainly need to stay for at least one day, although with the beauty of this particular village, you will certainly want more days in the village. Nearby are the village of Neos Panteleimon, Katerini, and Litochoro.

It would be ideal to combine your trip with a small excursion to all these areas and not miss the opportunity to see the uniquely beautiful Platamon Castle up close.

When you arrive in the village, you will leave your vehicle and walk onto the paved path to find where your accommodation is.

At the entrance of the village, there is a large sign indicating where various shops such as cafés and guesthouses are, but any local you ask will direct you in the best way.

Palaios Panteleimon accommodation

You will find many rooms in Palaios Panteleimon village for all tastes. Most guesthouses in Palaios Panteleimon are very close to the central square of the village and have all the necessary amenities.

We particularly recommend the traditional guesthouse Agnantion in Palaios Panteleimon. Of course, you will also find many other guesthouses such as Pantheon, Pleiades, and Enastron. For accommodation during holidays or long weekends, make sure to book your room as early as possible.

Palaios Panteleimon spa

Palaios Panteleimon is a very small village, and there are no spa facilities in the area. However, at Agnantion guesthouse, alongside your stay, you can combine a visit to the guesthouse's beautiful private spa.

More specifically, in the specially designed area on the lower floor of the hotel, there is a pool with a waterfall and a fireplace, a steam bath, and a sauna. There is also a shower in the area for you to bathe once you finish, and a hairdryer so you are perfectly ready to leave the spa.

There are also two sun loungers in the area for you to relax if you wish, although we don't think you'll use them since there is such a wonderful mosaic pool.

Upon your entry to the spa, the guesthouse will provide you with towels, so you essentially have nothing to worry about. You can enjoy all this for a period of one and a half hours after making an appointment with the Agnantion guesthouse in Palaios Panteleimon.

Make sure to book your spa appointment early; it is best to book the time you wish to visit the spa along with your room reservation.

Palaios Panteleimon food

In Palaios Panteleimon, you will find the warmest and most traditional tavernas. Don't miss the opportunity to try excellent young lamb (zygouri) and traditional stews. Other very good options include kontosouvli (rotisserie meat) and all the spit-roasted meats you'll come across. Generally, meat is highly celebrated in the area. Don't forget to accompany your meal with some lovely red wine.

Palaios Panteleimon cafés

While you're there, don't miss the chance to have a traditional Greek coffee in one of the village's cafés. Most are located in the village square near the plane tree. Besides coffees, you'll find wonderful mountain tea, chamomile, and other tea selections. You can combine your coffee or tea with a homemade pie or a sweet treat.

Palaios Panteleimon activities

Unfortunately, there isn't much to do in terms of activities in the area if you don't want to get in your car and head down from the village. If you want to stay up, you can go hiking by following the path that starts from the beginning of the village.

Prepare properly, put on your trainers, take some water with you, and set off. Don't forget your camera, as the natural landscape in Palaios Panteleimon is ideal for photos. And of course, you don't want to miss the opportunity to capture the magnificent view.

In the area, there are no other attractions apart from the Church of Agios Panteleimon. Generally, in your free time in the village, take a stroll through the shops selling traditional products. In the shops, you will find herbs, teas, essential oils, soaps, and many other items such as spoon sweets, liqueurs, honey, pasta, and of course, many souvenirs so you'll never forget this experience.

An excursion to Palaios Panteleimon is an experience you will remember for a long time. You won't find nightlife if that's what you're looking for, only traditional tavernas, lovely cafés, and a beautiful natural landscape. It is a very romantic area to visit if you are a couple.
