Nafpaktos: A travel guide to what to see, what to do and where to stay

Nafpaktos is worth visiting for its combination of a historic seaside town, beaches within walking distance and mountains close enough for a day trip. The small fortified harbour makes the first impression, but the town's character is just as evident in its steep lanes, walks beneath the plane trees and neighbourhoods where everyday life carries on through the winter.

For a first visit, allow two nights and three days: one for the harbour and castle, one for the seafront and one for an excursion. With four or five days, you can more comfortably fit in mountainous Nafpaktia and the coast of Phocis without spending most of your trip in the car.

Why visit

Nafpaktos lies on the southern coast of Aetolia-Acarnania, on the northern side of the Gulf of Corinth, near the strait between Rio and Antirrio. Its location explains much of its history: sea routes, crossings into western Greece and roads climbing into the mountainous interior all meet here. For today's traveller, this means easy access from the Peloponnese and plenty of different day trips, without having to change base every night.

The terrain also shapes the experience of the town. The sea stretches out in front, residential slopes rise behind the harbour and the castle crowns the hill. The scale remains manageable: the historic centre can be explored on foot, while the two main beaches stretch out to its east and west. You do not have to choose between a seaside holiday and exploring the town, although the climb to the higher parts requires some stamina.

The name Nafpaktos is linked to ancient shipbuilding. The town's history stretches back to antiquity, and it became particularly important during the Peloponnesian War, when it served as an Athenian naval base and a place of settlement for Messenians. This earlier history is not always reflected in readily visible ancient remains. It does, however, help you understand that Nafpaktos did not simply grow up around the much-photographed harbour you see today, but has far deeper roots.

During the medieval and later centuries, the town passed through the hands of different rulers, with significant Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods. The fortifications we see today are the result of this succession, rather than the work of a single period. The walls descend from the hill towards the sea, enclosing the historic core. Looking at them from below and then making your way up gives you a better sense of how a fortified town worked and why protecting the harbour mattered so much.

The internationally renowned Battle of Lepanto took place in 1571, when the fleet of the Holy League clashed with the Ottoman fleet. Despite its name, the battle was not fought inside today's small harbour, but in the wider waters near the Echinades islands. Among those who took part was Miguel de Cervantes, the future author of Don Quixote. His presence is commemorated in the town, offering an interesting starting point for exploring its history.

Modern Nafpaktos is not an open-air stage set that comes to life only during the holiday months. It has permanent residents, shopping streets, schools, cafés and tavernas that serve everyday local life. This makes a visit outside summer worthwhile: swimming may not be on the agenda, but you can enjoy quiet walks, clearer views after the rain and more space in the popular spots. At weekends, by contrast, the centre often becomes noticeably busier.

It suits couples looking for leisurely walks and good food, families who prefer not to be constantly on the move, and travellers seeking a base for exploring varied landscapes. Its main strength is not any single attraction, but the chance to change pace within the same day. You can spend the morning at the castle, lunchtime by the water and the afternoon in a neighbourhood away from the harbour, without much planning.

Getting there

From Athens, allow for roughly 215 to 225 kilometres and a drive of 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours, depending on your starting point and traffic. The usual route follows the Olympia Odos motorway to Rio, crosses the Rio-Antirrio Bridge and continues towards Nafpaktos. Budget separately for the motorway and bridge tolls.

From Thessaloniki, via the Egnatia Odos and Ionia Odos motorways, the distance is around 460 to 480 kilometres, usually taking 5 to 5.5 hours without long stops. These journey times are approximate, particularly in rain or heavy traffic.

Nafpaktos is served by intercity coaches. Check with KTEL Aetolia-Acarnania for current services from Athens and connection options from Thessaloniki, as connections and service frequencies vary. If you are arriving via Patras and want to take day trips, the guide to car hire in Patras will help you arrange collection. Within the town itself, however, a car is not essential.

What to see

The Venetian harbour

The small fortified harbour is the natural starting point. Walk along both sides to see the narrow entrance from the sea, the towers and how the walls follow the hillside. It is quieter early in the morning, while in the late afternoon the surrounding cafés become the focus of activity.

Nafpaktos Castle

The castle rises through successive tiers of fortifications and offers panoramic views of the town and the gulf. The walk up from the centre is steep and calls for enclosed shoes, especially when the cobbles are wet. Check the opening hours before setting off and allow time for the walk, not just the visit inside.

The lanes and the Clock Tower

Between the harbour and the castle, the narrow lanes reveal different sides of the old town. The Clock Tower is a distinctive landmark on the uphill walk. There is no need to follow a fixed route, but it is worth having a map, as the steps and slopes will not suit every visitor.

Botzaris Tower and the Cervantes monument

Botzaris Tower is one of the most important historic buildings near the harbour. It is worth including on your walk, though you should check separately whether you can visit the interior. The Cervantes monument near the harbour entrance connects your visit with the famous naval battle.

Gribovo and Psani

Gribovo lies east of the harbour and Psani to the west. These are the two main seafront areas for walking, eating out and swimming in summer, with plane trees along parts of the shore. The beaches are pebbly with sandy stretches in places, so water shoes may be useful.

Activities

The simplest option is a long seafront walk from Psani to Gribovo, stopping at the harbour along the way. For families, the flat seafront route is more practical than the lanes leading up to the castle. For more ideas in the wider area, see these day trips with children near Patras.

For hiking, the mountainous Nafpaktia region offers forest scenery around Ano Chora and other villages. Choose a route using reliable local advice, bring suitable equipment and allow plenty of daylight. Distances on the map often make journeys seem quicker than they are, as the roads are full of bends.

Rafting is available on the Evinos River through organised operators, depending on water levels and weather conditions. Contact the operator in advance to confirm the meeting point, equipment and participation requirements. In summer, you can also head to Trizonia, travelling via Glyfada in Fokida and taking a boat from there. For a longer stay, see accommodation options on Trizonia.

When to visit

Spring

Spring is a good time to visit the castle, explore on foot and take mountain routes without the summer heat. Rain is still possible, so bring waterproofs and have a backup plan. Do not assume that a sunny day on the coast means the same conditions in the mountains.

Summer

Make the most of the sea and save the climb to the castle for the cooler hours, within its opening times. Demand for accommodation and parking increases. A seafront location is convenient, but check for potential noise at night.

Autumn

Early in the season, you may be able to combine swimming and sightseeing, weather permitting. Later on, the focus shifts to food, walks and the mountainous Nafpaktia region. Take care on wet leaves and cobbles.

Winter

The town is ideal for a quiet two-day break without relying on snow-based activities. Conditions in the mountains are different, so check the forecast and road conditions. If you would like to stay overnight in the mountains, consult the guide to accommodation with fireplaces in mountainous Nafpaktia.

3-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrive, settle in and leave the car behind. Start at the harbour, pass the Cervantes monument and continue towards Psani. In the afternoon, explore the lanes in the lower part of town and round off the day with a meal in town, without any further journeys.

Day 2

Head up to the castle in the morning, stopping at the Clock Tower and the viewpoints. Once you are back down, make your way to Gribovo for lunch and a rest. In summer, spend the afternoon swimming; at other times of year, opt for a longer walk along the seafront.

Day 3

Choose one excursion: Ano Chora for mountain scenery or the coast of Fokida for a seaside drive. Do not try to fit in both. If you are continuing east rather than heading back, the guide to areas to stay in Galaxidi will help you turn your three-day break into a longer trip.

What to eat

In this seaside town, look for fish and seafood, but do not assume that everything is local or fresh simply because it is served by the sea. Ask where it comes from and, for fish sold by the kilo, check the weight and price before ordering. Leafy greens, salads and simple meze dishes make a good light lunch.

On trips into the mountains, the food tends more towards meat, slow-cooked dishes, pies and cheeses. Choose dishes that are actually being cooked that day rather than being drawn in by an overly extensive menu. As a rough guide, allow €20 to €35 per person for a meal at a taverna, with higher costs for premium fish or extra wine.

Where to stay

The old harbour is a good choice for atmosphere and evenings out, but check access and noise levels. Gribovo and Psani are better suited to those who want seafront walks and swimming. Staying in the mountains gives you a different base, not an extension of the town centre. See also the detailed guide to areas to stay in Nafpaktos.

Practical tips

  • Parking: do not count on finding a space next to the harbour. Ask your accommodation about legal parking options and whether you can stop briefly to unload your luggage.
  • Access: the seafront routes are easier to navigate than the old town. If you have a pushchair or reduced mobility, check the specific route and entrance beforehand.
  • What to bring: pack shoes with good grip, water and sun protection. In winter, add a waterproof jacket and a warm layer for the mountains.
  • Day trips: avoid packing too much into your itinerary. These suggestions for day trips from Patras offer ideas for combining visits across the wider area.
