Why visit Metsovo
Nestled on a verdant mountainside in the Pindus range, at an altitude of 1,200 metres, Metsovo is not merely a beautiful mountain village. It is a place with profound history, vibrant tradition, and an air of grandeur rarely encountered. Its Vlach name, Aminciu, meaning 'inaccessible', attests to the character of a place that for centuries remained autonomous and proud, forging its own unique identity. This identity is visible in every corner: in the imposing stone mansions with their slate roofs, in the cobblestone alleyways winding up to the central square, in the traditional vibrant woven textiles, and, of course, in the faces of the locals, many of whom still speak the Vlach dialect.
Metsovo's history is inextricably linked with great national benefactors, such as the Tositsa and Averoff families, whose endowments not only supported their homeland but also crucially contributed to the development of all of Greece. This legacy is alive today through treasured institutions, such as the Tositsa Mansion Folklore Museum and the E. Averoff Gallery. At the same time, Metsovo is a gastronomic paradise. Its famous cheeses, Metsovone and Metsovela, local meats masterfully grilled, handmade pies, and the exquisite red wine from Katogi Averoff Winery create a memorable culinary experience. Surrounded by the dense forests of the Pindus National Park (Valia Calda) and overlooking majestic peaks, Metsovo offers a comprehensive escape combining culture, nature, gastronomy, and authentic hospitality, explaining why Metsovo is famous as one of mainland Greece's top destinations.
How to get there
Access to Metsovo is now exceptionally easy thanks to the Egnatia Odos (A2) motorway, which passes literally next to the settlement, making it an ideal base for exploring Epirus. Travelling by car is the most popular and comfortable option.
- From Athens: The distance is approximately 420 km and the journey takes about 4.5 hours. The route from Athens is via the Olympia Odos and Ionia Odos motorways to Ioannina, and from there you follow the Egnatia Odos towards Thessaloniki/Grevena, until the exit for Metsovo.
- From Thessaloniki: The distance is approximately 215 km and the journey takes less than 2.5 hours. The route is entirely on the Egnatia Odos, heading towards Ioannina/Igoumenitsa.
Alternatively, you can travel by KTEL intercity bus. There are regular services from Athens (Kifissos) and Thessaloniki KTEL stations to Ioannina, and from there you can connect with local buses to Metsovo. The KTEL journey is more time-consuming but more economical. For greater flexibility in your travels around the wider area, you might consider car rental from Ioannina, especially if you arrive there by plane or bus.
What to see in Metsovo
E. Averoff Art Gallery
Housed in an impressive three-storey building, the Averoff Gallery is one of the most important museums of modern Greek art. Its collection includes approximately 200 works by leading Greek painters and sculptors of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Nikolaos Gyzis, Nikiforos Lytras, Konstantinos Parthenis, Yiannis Tsarouchis and many others. A visit here is a journey through the history of contemporary Greek art, in a space of high aesthetic value.
Tositsa Foundation Folklore Museum (Tositsa Mansion)
To truly understand the soul of Metsovo, a visit to the restored Tositsa family mansion is a must. The museum accurately recreates the life of a wealthy 19th-century family. You will wander through rooms with carved wooden ceilings, magnificent low dining tables (sofres), authentic furniture, colourful woven textiles, traditional costumes, and a rich collection of weapons and jewellery. It is an immersive experience that transports you to another era.
Katogi Averoff Winery
Even if you are not a wine lover, a visit to the Katogi Averoff Winery is a unique experience. You will tour the atmospheric cellars with hundreds of oak barrels, learn the story of Evangelos Averoff, who dared to plant Cabernet Sauvignon on the slopes of the Pindus, and, of course, taste the estate's award-winning wines. The space combines tradition with modern art and high aesthetics.
Monastery of Agios Nikolaos
In an idyllic location, below the main settlement and beside the banks of the Metsovitikos River, lies the historic Monastery of Agios Nikolaos. It dates back to the 14th century, although its current form is from the 18th century. The interior of the main church is fully frescoed with exceptionally artistic murals that have recently been conserved, offering an impressive spectacle. The tranquillity of the landscape and the spirituality of the space make it an ideal place for contemplation.
Central Square & Holy Church of Agia Paraskevi
The heart of Metsovo beats in its central square. Here you will find traditional coffee houses, tavernas, and shops selling local products. It is a meeting point for locals and visitors, where you can sit and observe the hustle and bustle, often seeing elderly Metsovites in their traditional costumes. At the edge of the square stands the church of Agia Paraskevi, Metsovo's patron saint, with its ornate wooden carved iconostasis and rare icons.
Evangelos Averoff Garden
Just above the central square, the Averoff Garden is an oasis of greenery and tranquillity. All kinds of trees and plants from the Pindus are hosted here, offering an opportunity for a relaxing stroll. In the centre of the garden is the chapel of Agios Georgios, where Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas is buried, with a view of the place he loved and benefited so much.
