Why visit Arachova and Delphi
Arachova and Delphi, two names inextricably linked with Mount Parnassus, form one of the most iconic and timeless destinations in mainland Greece. Their magic lies precisely in this unique combination: on one hand, cosmopolitan, vibrant, and traditional Arachova, and on the other, Delphi, the global centre of spirit and history. This proximity creates a travel duality that caters to every desire, from mountain adventure and nightlife, to spiritual elevation and a connection with ancient history.
Geographically, the area is blessed. Built amphitheatrically on a steep slope of Parnassus, Arachova overlooks the serene landscape of the Delphic olive grove and the Pleistos valley. Its stone houses, narrow cobbled streets, and imposing position give it an authentic mountain character. A few kilometres further down, Delphi stretches across a breathtaking location, nestled between the two colossal rocky Phaedriades, exuding a sense of mystery and grandeur that remains unchanged for millennia. To truly understand what Arachova is famous for, you must walk its alleys, and to feel the energy of the place, you must stand in silence before the Temple of Apollo, realising why Delphi is renowned worldwide.
Historically, the two areas have followed parallel but distinct paths. Delphi was the 'navel of the Earth' for the ancient world, the most important oracle that influenced the fates of kings and entire cities. This legacy is still visible today in every corner of the archaeological site. Arachova, on the other hand, boasts a more recent but equally proud history, with the victorious Battle of Arachova under Georgios Karaiskakis during the 1821 Revolution as its highlight. Gradually, from a livestock-farming main village, it evolved into the 'queen of winter', thanks to its proximity to the Parnassus Ski Centre, without, however, losing its soul. Thus, visitors today come not only for skiing and entertainment, but to experience a complete journey that connects the past with the present, nature with culture, and action with relaxation.
How to get there
Access to Arachova and Delphi is particularly easy, making the area an ideal choice for getaways from major urban centres.
By car:
Driving is the most popular and practical option. The distance from Athens is approximately 170 km, and the journey takes a little over 2 hours, depending on traffic. Follow the Athens-Lamia National Road and take the exit for Kastro/Orchomenos/Livadeia. From there, the route continues via Livadeia and follows a beautiful mountain ascent to Arachova. Delphi is just 10 km past Arachova.
From Thessaloniki, the distance is approximately 380 km, and the journey takes about 4 hours. Drivers follow the Thessaloniki-Athens National Road and take the exit for Lamia. Then, they follow the route towards Amfissa, Delphi, and finally Arachova, enjoying the view of Parnassus from the other side.
By KTEL bus:
For those who prefer public transport, KTEL Fokidas operates daily and frequent routes from the KTEL station in Liosia, Athens. Buses go either directly to Arachova and Delphi or via Amfissa. The journey duration is approximately 3 hours. It is a reliable and economical solution, although a car offers greater flexibility for exploring the wider area.
What to see in Arachova and Delphi
Delphi Archaeological Site
One of the most impressive places to visit in Greece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking along the Sacred Way, you will feel the awe of history. You will admire the Treasury of the Athenians, the reconstructed Temple of Apollo where the Pythia delivered her oracles, the ancient Theatre with its incredible acoustics and views, and you will climb to the ancient Stadium, at the top of the hill, where the Pythian Games were held.
Delphi Archaeological Museum
Right next to the archaeological site, the museum houses some of the most significant masterpieces of ancient Greek art. The centrepiece is the famous Charioteer of Delphi, a bronze statue of unparalleled technique and beauty. Other important exhibits include the enigmatic Sphinx of Naxos, the Archaic Kouroi, and the chryselephantine statues found in the deposit of the Sacred Way.
Arachova village
Arachova is a sight in itself. The main street is bustling with life, with luxury shops, traditional workshops, cafes, and bars. However, its true charm lies in its narrow, uphill cobbled streets. It is worth climbing the 264 steps of Egarsios, which lead to the imposing church of Agios Georgios, the town's patron saint. From there, the view is panoramic. Do not miss a stroll to the Clock, the old bell tower that stands on a steep rock and is the town's landmark.
Monastery of Hosios Loukas
About 30 minutes' drive from Arachova, you will find one of Greece's most significant Byzantine monuments, the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, also a UNESCO protected site. The complex includes two churches and is famous for its stunning 11th-century mosaics with gold backgrounds, considered among the finest examples of Middle Byzantine art.
Fokida Mining Park (Vagonetto)
A unique and extremely interesting experience for all ages. Located on the road to Amfissa, it offers a unique opportunity to learn about the history of bauxite mining in the area. Visitors board the authentic miners' train, the 'vagonetto', and are guided through an old underground tunnel, learning about the difficult working conditions and the importance of the mineral for the local economy.
Galaxidi
If you have the time and inclination for a touch of the sea on your mountain trip, Galaxidi is less than an hour away. This beautiful seafaring town, with its captain's houses, two natural harbours, and Maritime Museum, offers a completely different atmosphere. It is ideal for a relaxed coffee by the sea or fresh fish. If it charms you, it is worth exploring the options for where to stay in Galaxidi.
Activities in the wider area
Parnassus and the surrounding area are a paradise for lovers of action and nature.
Skiing and Snowboarding in Parnassus
Greece's largest and most modern ski resort. With two main areas, Kellaria and Fterolakka, it offers slopes for all levels, from beginners to very experienced skiers and snowboarders. Modern lifts, chalets, and ski schools make it the ultimate winter destination.
Hiking
The area is crisscrossed by a dense network of trails. The most famous is the ancient path connecting Delphi with the port of Kirra, a route through the impressive olive grove of Amfissa. Also, the European E4 path crosses the Parnassus National Park, offering enchanting routes through fir forests. Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons for hiking.
Paragliding
For the more adventurous, a paragliding flight over the Delphic landscape is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Flights usually start from hills near Delphi or Itea and offer unique, panoramic views of the archaeological site, the olive grove, and the Corinthian Gulf.
Mountain Biking
The countless forest roads and trails of Parnassus are ideal for mountain biking. There are routes for every fitness level, from leisurely rides on the Livadi plateau to challenging descents for adrenaline junkies.
The destination by season
Winter
Arachova's absolute season. The landscape is often snow-covered, the ski resort is in full swing, and the atmosphere in the village is cosmopolitan and festive. It is the time for skiing, hot chocolate by the fireplace, tasting traditional taverna dishes, and vibrant nightlife. Early booking is essential.
Spring
Perhaps the most beautiful time to visit Delphi. Nature is at its best, with everything in bloom and vibrant colours. The weather is ideal for hiking and exploring archaeological sites without the summer crowds or winter cold.
Summer
Arachova offers a cool escape from the city heat. There is significantly less traffic, a more relaxed pace, and more affordable prices. It serves as an ideal base for excursions into the Parnassus countryside, as well as for swimming at the nearby beaches of Itea, Galaxidi, and Agios Nikolaos.
Autumn
The landscape of Parnassus dresses in the golden-red colours of autumn, creating a magical setting. The weather is usually mild and favourable for outdoor activities. This is the season when the village slowly regains its winter rhythm, offering a sense of calm before the peak season.
3-day itinerary in Arachova and Delphi
Day 1: Arrival and Arachova atmosphere
Arrive and settle into your accommodation. The first day is dedicated to exploring Arachova. Walk along the main street, browse the shops with local products (formaella cheese, hilopites pasta) and handmade woven goods. Climb the steps of Egarsios to enjoy the view from the church of Agios Georgios and take photos at the Clock during sunset. In the evening, choose one of the many traditional tavernas in the village for lamb chops and local specialities.
Day 2: Dive into History (Delphi)
Dedicate the entire morning to Delphi. Start early to avoid the heat and crowds. First, visit the archaeological site, allowing yourself to wander among the ancient monuments, and then the Archaeological Museum to admire the finds up close. For lunch, you can choose a taverna in Delphi village with a view of the Corinthian Gulf. The afternoon is ideal for relaxation or, for those with energy, a visit to the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia with its impressive Tholos.
Day 3: Activities and Departure
The third day can be tailored to your interests and the season. In winter, a visit to the Parnassus Ski Centre for skiing or simply for a coffee at the chalet is a must. In other seasons, you can take a trip to the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, experience the adventure of Vagonetto, or head down to coastal Galaxidi. After enjoying a final meal in the area, you embark on your return journey, filled with images and experiences.
What to eat
The local gastronomy is rich and based on pure local ingredients. The star of the cuisine is formaella, a semi-hard PDO cheese usually eaten saganaki (fried). In Arachova, you will find excellent meats, grilled over charcoal. Be sure to try lamb chops, kokoretsi (spit-roasted offal), kontosouvli (large chunks of pork on a skewer), and, if you are lucky, wild boar stifado (stew). Do not forget to taste the traditional handmade pies, local hilopites (egg pasta), and trahanas (fermented milk and grain pasta). Accompany your meal with local red wine or strong tsipouro.

- Clothing: Even in summer, mountain temperatures can drop significantly at night. Always bring warm clothes and dress in layers. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are essential for the cobbled streets and archaeological sites.
