Exploring Dozza

Your very first glance will be fixed on the wall you encounter, which you'll admire for ages. Then, looking more closely, you'll realise that the sketch or painting you see is signed by a well-known artist. The numerous murals are indeed a defining characteristic of Dozza.

Your surprise will be complete when you learn that every two years, this town hosts an artists' gathering called the Biennale del Muro Dipinto, which began in 1960. Each year, artists who come here to showcase their talent create new artworks that are added to the old ones, gradually filling all the town's walls.

This year, the Biennale will take place during the first two weeks of September. However, this isn't the only event happening in the small, beautiful, and lush green town of Dozza. Every year, a major wine festival is held, as the region produces many excellent wine varieties and even has a dedicated wine museum.

Dozza has a tradition in oenology that dates back to the famous Albana. Its white wine has been produced for centuries and is the first white wine in Italy to have received the renowned D.O.C.G. title.

Sights of Dozza

The region's castles are among its best attractions. You should visit Rocca Sforzesca, or Sforza Castle, to understand the strategic importance of the Via Emilia region in ancient times.

The castle is open to the public, where you can admire a magnificent collection of 15th and 16th-century furniture and paintings.

Don't miss the wing of Pope Pio VII, which the Pope used during Napoleon's invasions of Europe. From the towers, you can admire the landscape with its rolling hills and vineyards.

Dozza's town hall is located in front of the central church, next to the main square, Piazza Zotti.

It is an ancient building that has been restored many times, standing out for its aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, the town's Court is said to have been frescoed by Marco Palmezzano.

Finally, don't forget to take a stroll along the town walls that have surrounded it since 1087.

 

 

Food and Shopping in Dozza

Visit the restaurant “Cane”, where you will find all the region's wine varieties from famous wine houses.

A nice meal will cost you, without wine, approximately 30-35 euros per person. The best place to taste over 600 types of wines, from 160 producers, is at the Enoteca Regionale Emilia-Romagna, located in the cellars of Rocca Sforzesca castle.

There, the experienced staff will help you choose the wine you like, taste it, and of course, buy various bottles to take home.
