How to choose the right destination for a trip.

Here, we won't give you yet another guide on which places you must visit at least once in your life, nor will we tell you which are the most popular destinations for this year, or anything similar. In this guide, we will show you some factors so that you can choose the ideal destination for yourself.

Of course, the easiest solution and answer to this question is that there is no single answer. The ideal destination for you at this specific time depends on several factors, such as your personal preferences regarding the style of trip you wish to take, how much free time you have available for a trip, and, of course, your budget.

Clarify all these uncertainties, and your destination options will be countless.

But where do you start to gradually narrow down all these countless choices?

With all the advertisements we see everywhere these days, such as on television, social media, and even in magazines and newspapers, choosing a destination for our next trip can be exhausting just thinking about it.

All this will make us postpone the process more and more, and we will end up only dreaming about our trip from the comfort of our armchair at home. Do not make this mistake.

There is a saying we can use in this case:

“Many things will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart…pursue those.” – Michael Nolan

When it comes to choosing a travel destination, the following questions will help you narrow down your list of options.

Why do you want to travel?

Honestly! Why do you want to travel?

Knowing why you want to do anything in the first place is crucial. If that 'why' is strong enough, it commits you to making it a reality.

For me, travelling is much more than crossing destinations off a list. Of course, it's nice to take the photo we want in front of the Eiffel Tower, for example, and post it on social media, but is there something deeper in that image?

Don't travel just for the sake of travelling. It won't necessarily always be restful and relaxing.

For many, travelling has a deeper meaning.

Who are you travelling with?

Your travel destination is completely influenced by who you will be travelling with!

Your choices will be very different if you have a family and children. So, think about it. Who will you travel with? Alone, as a couple, or as a family?

If you are travelling as a family, the best thing to do is sit down together and discuss your ideas for your upcoming trip and your interests. Memorable trips are those where each family member does an activity they love. Finding the balance between activities that children enjoy and having time for adults to do things they prefer is generally the key.

If you are travelling as a couple, discuss your desires and expectations for this trip. Be clear about what you want and make a decision that both of you will like. Don't leave it to just one of you to make the decision. Perhaps you can agree to choose your trip destination alternately each year.

What kind of trip do you have in mind?

A significant part of your decision will be your personal travel style, what you like to experience, and your daily routine.

Is your daily life chaotic, and all you need is a trip to relax and spend quality time with your family?

Or are you the type who can't sit still for long, and all you want is to constantly be on the move and see as much as possible?

Personally, I prefer and choose to combine both on every trip. To have time to see all the sights or whatever the place offers, but also to have days free of obligations where we can just relax on the beach or at a spa.

We will discuss the financial aspects of the trip and the days you will have available, but for now, please consider the following questions:

Do you prefer:

Adventure or relaxation?

City or countryside?

Beaches or mountains?

Luxury resorts or road trips?

Festivals and fairs or cultural events?

Shopping or dining?

Luxury, budget-friendly, or something in between?

Are you someone who enjoys spending time by the sea reading a book, or do you prefer spending time by the hotel pool? Or does the thought of all this bore you to death? If you answer all these questions, you will significantly narrow down your options.

How much free time do you have?

If you only have one to two weeks of holidays per year, then you certainly won't want to waste many days getting to your destination. However, if you have 2 to 4 weeks, you can look for a more distant destination.

Below, I will give you some key points depending on the time you have available.

Short holidays (1 to 2 weeks)

  • The travel duration should be short
  • Choose only one country or region
  • There is a possibility of spending more to save time
  • You might pack too many activities into a short period to fit everything in, but this might exhaust you
  • You should have a clear purpose for your trip, and your activities should align with it
  • You will probably take more with you than you need, but your purchases will be more useful
  • You will likely visit countries or places that are more expensive
  • You will probably have a pre-defined and relatively tight schedule due to the few days you will have available

Longer holidays (2 to 4 weeks or more)

  • You can dedicate more time to travelling from one place to another
  • Depending on the duration, you can visit many countries/locations
  • You will sacrifice time to save some money
  • You will need to be more careful to stay within budget and find the best deals
  • Try not to pack too many things and embrace minimalism for just a few days
  • You will have more time for your schedule to be more flexible

What is your budget?

You will find the ideal destination for any amount you can afford.

However, it will affect your final decision, as it might not be very economical, especially if your trip is long. It's a good idea to visit more affordable regions. Consider your currency and how strong it will be, also where you will exchange your currency and which other currencies will be stronger.

Think strategically about your choices.

Do you want to learn something? Do you want this trip to help you delve into a new language or another culture? Travel accordingly. If you are learning Spanish, you will go to Spain or South America. Perhaps you can stay with a local family for a few days!

Do you want to learn how to make Thai food because it's your favourite, and you've always wanted to learn to cook it yourself? Then travel to Phuket!

If food generally means a lot to you, then you can visit destinations like Italy, France, Japan, and India.

What else could you learn or experience?

There are experiences and lessons you can have more authentically in specific parts of the world. Take advantage of this travel opportunity and experience what you've always wanted in the place where it originated or in the place that offers the ideal natural landscapes for each activity.

Which season(s) do you prefer?

Many people travel for the seasons. Are you someone who likes summer or winter?

I always prefer summer. You can simply do more outdoor activities in summer, as well as hobbies involving the sea and beaches in general. Also, people are happier and more cheerful during the summer when the sun shines for so many hours a day. And of course, when it comes to travel, in summer you might only need half the luggage you'd need in winter. Of course, you'll need space for other things like rackets, boards, and so on.

So, unless you are people who prefer winter getaways, I imagine you are also chasing the sun. This can mean that prices will be higher unless you go to areas that always have the same climate. You might waste a lot of money unnecessarily if you don't correctly calculate the season you will go and the weather conditions that will prevail.

On the other hand, by choosing a low-cost airline such as Ryanair or Wizzair, you can travel affordably any time of year if you plan your trip early. With proper planning, you can find Ryanair tickets at quite low prices, about 4-5 months before your trip to an international destination.

Can you travel off-season?

If you are lucky enough to be flexible regarding when you take your holiday leave, this will be excellent for you. Being able to avoid the busy period, i.e., from late July to late August, is one of the best tips we can give you. This way, you can save money on transport, accommodation, and activities. For your summer holidays within Greece, we recommend taking your holidays in the first ten days of September or from early to mid-July.

Go where flights are cheap

Instead of wasting time thinking about which destination to choose, just pick the most advantageous flight for you.

All you have to do is log on to our website https://v1.tec.gr/~travelo/, enter your available dates, and search to find the cheapest flight tickets within and outside Greece. If you choose to book airtickets, you can benefit from an even greater discount when combining flights with hotels and car rental!

Do you revisit old destinations or do you want a different destination for each trip?

We are often asked this question. Whether we revisit the same destinations or if we are constantly looking for new ones. And if so, why do we do it.

Well, of course, if there is a specific experience or feeling we want to relive, there's no second thought! Like our magical trip to Ikaria, where you can read about our experiences in this article. There is absolutely no hesitation in going back to a place where we had a wonderful time the first time! The main part is that you travel but are also completely honest with yourself.

If you also choose to revisit an old but beloved destination, try to do something different this time. Stay in a different area, eat in different restaurants, visit other beaches, consider if you can take a two-day trip to another nearby destination. Generally, look for different experiences.

Of course, we all have a list of places we want to travel to, and we naturally hope to get to all of them, but let's be realistic and have priorities. If there is a place you've dreamed of visiting for years, consider if this is the year you'll make it happen.

Do you hate organising trips and transfers?

Why not consider taking a cruise? Perhaps in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, or even the Mexican Riviera. Or you could even consider the possibility of an all-inclusive resort.

They include activities for all ages, have dining options for all ages, and if you choose it, they will either be action-packed or simply allow you to relax all day if that's what you desire. Generally, these options will save you the headaches of making decisions. You simply board the cruise ship or arrive at the resort, and you don't have to think about anything else. It's certainly something we would all like to enjoy at least once in our lives.

Have you ever thought about combining work and travel?

If you want your trip to be long, why not consider working during it? It will give you the opportunity to get to know a new culture, acquire new skills, and it's the best way to fund your holidays.

Travel close to home.

If money and time are your concerns, then why spend your holidays simply at home?

  • The benefits of such a possibility are numerous.
  • Less to think about
  • Less to pack
  • Less time away from home
  • More economical choices

Consider starting with small, nearby getaways, and as time goes on, it will seem easier and easier to plan your next trip and choose the location that will be ideal for you at that particular time.
