Thassos – natural landscape – family holidays – unique beaches

Thassos, the island of the Sirens and also the northernmost island of our country, is an amazing island with an unspoilt natural landscape that will captivate you. The dominant colours on the island are the blue of the sea and sky, the unique golden colour of its sandy beaches, and the distinctive green of the pine trees found all over the island.

As you can see, it is an almost round island. Distances from one place to another are very short. The port, which is the first thing you see as you arrive on the island, is Limenas (Thassos Town), at the top right of the photo, and it is the island's capital. There is another port on the island, Prinos (left and approximately in the middle). The centre of the island is Potos, which is also the most touristy spot.

Thassos airport

The beautiful island of Thassos does not have an airport yet. The closest airports are first Kavala Airport "Megas Alexandros" and then Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia". From Kavala airport, the port of Keramoti is only 15 minutes away, but because it is a small airport, flights may not be very frequent. On the other hand, from Makedonia airport, you will surely find flights that suit you, but the distance to Keramoti port is approximately 2.5 hours and to Kavala port is 2 hours. Kavala port also has connections to other ports such as Agios Kirykos in Ikaria, the ports of Karlovassi and Vathy in Samos, the port of Chios, Agios Efstratios, Lesvos, Limnos, and of course Lavrio.

Thassos ferry routes

The only way to reach Thassos is by ferry. The shortest route, lasting just 40 minutes, is from Keramoti to Limenas (Thassos Town). You will find very frequent services for this route. In the mornings, there are departures every half hour and forty-five minutes. The other way to reach the island is from Kavala port to Skala Prinos in Thassos. Thassos beaches

Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammoudia): one of the island's most famous beaches, which attracts a lot of people. It is organised, so you won't need anything beyond the essentials. It is located on the northern side of the island, and very close to it is Golden Coast (Chrysi Akti), another wonderful beach with golden sand and crystal-clear blue waters. If you don't have many days available, you can visit both of these unique beaches in one day.

Aliki is another one of the island's most famous beaches. It is located on the southeastern side of the island with very easy access. It consists of two coves and is an organised beach. You will often see many fishing boats anchored on the beach as it is a particularly popular destination on the island.

Saliara (Marble Beach): a wonderful beach with the cleanest and bluest waters you have ever seen. It is very close to Limenas (Thassos Town), and you should not miss the opportunity to swim there.

Paradise Beach: and you will literally feel like you have found paradise. Until a few years ago, this beach was a nudist beach, but now only a small part of it is considered as such. This beach has the finest, golden sand and crystal-clear waters. There, you will feel time stand still and you won't want to leave.

In Potos, the tourist centre of Thassos, you will find diving schools. The people there will help you and give you all the information you need. Thassos' clear waters are ideal for such underwater activities.

Thassos attractions

Giola: while you are in Thassos, one of the main things you must do is visit Giola, a natural rock pool. It is located in the Astris area, which is very close to Potos. The route is a bit challenging, but the destination will reward you. The pool is formed by high rocks that reach approximately eight metres, and many people dive from this height. It is not an organised beach and you will need to walk, so keep in mind what you will bring with you.

Palataki: In Limenaria, you will find the offices of a German company that exploited the area's mines. The building, unfortunately, has not been maintained, but it is a jewel of the area.

Archaeological Museum: In Limenas (Thassos Town), you will find the Thassos museum. You will see ancient artefacts that bear witness to the island's entire history. You will discover how much the island's inhabitants contributed to Ancient Greek Civilisation and many other things that will captivate you.

 

Thassos entertainment

The centre of entertainment and tourism in Thassos is located in Potos. You will find many beach bars and tavernas. In the evening, enjoy your drink in one of the wonderful bars you will find on the coast. Have a cocktail just to see how uniquely they are served. Limenas (Thassos Town) is equally famous for its nightlife if you want to go out there for an evening. Well-known clubs include Twins Club in Skala Potamias, a wonderful club that organises various events with guest DJs. Mandragoras is another club, also in Skala Potamias.

 

Don't forget

While in Thassos, one of the main things you must do is visit the village of Theologos, an incredibly beautiful mountain village. Theologos is known for its wonderful meats. You should definitely go for goat or country-style lamb in Theologos one afternoon. Lambiris is a wonderful taverna.

Archontissa is another taverna that we visit every time we are on the island of Thassos. It's a wonderful little taverna perched on a rock in the Aliki area, and they also have many of their own products. If you're lucky, they might even tell you your fortune with coffee grounds!

Iris Gold is located in Limenaria, and I love going to this wonderful jewellery shop. You will find very beautiful pieces, and even if you don't want to buy anything, you can just browse.

Before you leave Thassos, remember to stock up on the most delicious honey, candied walnut spoon sweet, and the most aromatic oregano.
