The Colosseum

Located right in the city centre, the oval amphitheatre is one of the most recognisable places in the world and attracts millions of tourists every year.

The Colosseum is also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, from the time of its construction. This structure of travertine and brick is the largest of its kind.

The Colosseum has been used in many ways over the years. Gladiator contests, executions, and various public events took place there in the past.

It is said to have hosted up to 80,000 people for performances.

It is well worth dedicating a little more time to take a tour and admire its interior.

 

St. Peter's Basilica – Piazza San Pietro

One of the most important religious buildings in the world, St. Peter's Basilica is an Italian Renaissance church located within Vatican City.

Situated on the edge of St. Peter's Square, it stands out with its front entrance decorated with statues of the Apostles and Jesus.

Many works by Michelangelo and Bernini are housed inside, making it one of the most beautiful sights.

Trevi Fountain – Piazza di Trevi

Designed by architect Nicola Salvi in the 18th century, the Trevi Fountain is located at the junction of three streets.

Built from white travertine stone, like the Colosseum, it is perhaps the most famous Baroque fountain in the entire world.

The fountain pays tribute to the Roman god Oceanus, who is depicted driving his chariot in the centre. The fountain is richly decorated with other impressive sculptures.

Roman Forum – Via della Salara Vecchia 5/6

The Roman Forum was the centre of religious and public life in the city; the old marketplace is a site of great historical importance for Rome.

The Spanish Steps – Piazza di Spagna

Connecting Piazza di Spagna with Piazza Trinita dei Monti, the 135 Spanish Steps are a true Roman treasure.

The steps are surrounded by stone walls, while at their summit stands the great obelisk with its distinctive cross and the Trinita dei Monti church.

At the bottom of the steps, you will notice the many inscriptions carved into the stone.

Take some time to explore Piazza di Spagna with its many cafés and luxury shops.

The steps are the ideal spot for a short break from your walk and, of course, to take some wonderful photos.

 

Sistine Chapel  – Vatican City

Famed for its intricate frescoes, the Sistine Chapel is located in the Apostolic Palace and is part of the Vatican Museums complex.
