Christmas in Trikala and the Mill of the Elves
Riverside walks along the Lithaios, festive workshops at the Mill of the Elves and meals in Manavika. A practical guide to three Christmas days in Trikala, with or without children.
Από Travelo Team

Christmas in Trikala moves at two different paces. The first is set by the Mill of the Elves, with families, lights, games and queues for the most popular activities. The second unfolds beside the Lithaios River, in the cafés of Asklipiou Street and along narrow lanes where the aroma of grilled food soon makes you forget your plans. The good news is that you do not have to choose: a three-day break leaves room for both the big festivities and the city itself.
This guide covers Trikala in Thessaly, not Trikala in Corinthia. For dates, opening hours and specific activities at the Mill, check this year's official programme, as the event's theme and individual activities change from year to year.
Why visit at Christmas
Trikala combines a major Christmas event with a centre that is a pleasure to explore on foot. The Lithaios flows through the city, the pedestrian streets are at the heart of daily life, and cafés, shops and tavernas are all close together. Your break need not revolve entirely around a single visit to the Mill.
For children, the Mill of the Elves is usually the main attraction. For adults, however, there is Varousi, Manavika, the Fortress and the option of a trip to Meteora. Compared with many Christmas holiday destinations, it is easy to plan a full three-day break here without flights or constant travelling.
The key is to accept that peak dates will be busy. For a quieter experience, choose weekdays before the school holidays. If you are arriving on Christmas Day or around New Year, arrange accommodation and meals well in advance.
How to get there
From Athens
Allow around 4 to 4.5 hours by car, without a long stop or heavy holiday traffic. The usual route follows the motorway towards Lamia, then the E65 towards Trikala. Allow extra time for leaving Athens, stops with children and the final stretch to your accommodation.
By KTEL coach, the journey usually takes around 4.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on the service and traffic. Check departures, boarding points and any public holiday changes with KTEL Trikalon. Book your return seat too, especially if travelling at the end of a festive long weekend.
From Thessaloniki
Allow around 2.5 to 3 hours by road, usually via the route towards Larissa and then on to Trikala. KTEL coaches take around 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on the departure. Trikala's intercity coach station is outside the central walking area, so factor in a local bus or taxi to your hotel.
Travelling by train
Rail travel requires particularly careful checking because of changes to services on the Thessaly network following the floods of 2023. The connection to Trikala traditionally runs via Palaiofarsalos, but may include a replacement bus service. As a rough planning allowance, expect around 5 to 7 hours from Athens and 3 to 5 hours from Thessaloniki, provided a suitable connection is available. Confirm availability and total journey time with Hellenic Train before booking.
From the centre to the Mill
The Mill of the Elves is in Matsopoulos Park, south-west of the centre. From the central stretch of the Lithaios, allow around 20 to 30 minutes on foot, depending on your starting point and pace. With small children, rain or tired legs, choose a taxi or the transport services announced for the event. Do not assume you will find parking beside the entrance.
Christmas events and markets
The Mill of the Elves in Matsopoulos Park
The Mill of the Elves has been held at the historic Matsopoulos Mill since 2011. It usually runs from late November until the first days of January, around Epiphany. Exact dates, opening hours and each event's theme are announced separately, so do not rely on a previous December's programme.
Regular features include Christmas displays, children's activities, creative workshops and meetings with Father Christmas. General admission has traditionally been free, as have many organised activities. Rides, shopping, food and drink may cost extra. Check this year's arrangements, especially if you want to work out the total cost for your family.
Allow around three to five hours for your visit, without expecting to do everything. With preschool children, it is better to choose a few activities and take a break along the way. Mornings usually make exploring easier, although there may be school groups on weekdays. After dark, the lights transform the park.
The market and city events
The organised Christmas market is mainly based at the Mill, where seasonal stalls sell gifts, treats and food. The mix of stallholders varies. This is not a market spread across all the city's squares, as you might find at some well-known Christmas markets abroad.
In the centre, Asklipiou and the surrounding shopping streets are ideal for everyday shopping amid the festive bustle. Light switch-ons, concerts and other municipal events depend on the annual programme. Look for announcements from the Municipality of Trikala and the Mill, rather than assuming a particular concert or outdoor event will take place on the day you arrive.
Things to see and do
The Lithaios and central pedestrian streets
Start at the Central Bridge and follow the banks of the Lithaios for a while. This is the easiest introduction to the city, and a walk worth repeating at night. Continue along Asklipiou for coffee, window-shopping and a glimpse of everyday life. Pay attention to signs and bicycles, particularly when children run ahead.
Varousi, the Fortress and Manavika
The scene changes in Varousi: low-rise houses, old churches and narrow lanes that invite a slower pace. Head up towards the Fortress and its distinctive clock tower for the views, provided the grounds are accessible. Check opening hours before planning to go inside, as works or seasonal arrangements may affect access.
On your way down, pass through Manavika. This old trading district now has plenty of places to eat and is one of the most enjoyable areas for an evening out. Look out for the well-known large mural depicting scenes from the old town. Over the festive period, a phone call to reserve a table can save a long wait.
Museums and a nearby excursion
The Tsitsanis Museum, housed in the former prison, adds a rewarding musical stop to your trip. Vasilis Tsitsanis was born in Trikala, and a visit helps connect the city with his work. The complex also includes the Ottoman bathhouse. Confirm opening days and festive opening hours.
If you have a car, Kalambaka is around 30 to 40 minutes away, with the first routes through Meteora a little further on. For help choosing monasteries and planning your visit, read the guide to Kalambaka and Meteora. In December, keep your outing to daylight hours and do not underestimate fog, steps or slippery surfaces.
What to eat and drink
Thessalian cooking suits the winter: pies, meat, sausages and meze for the table to share. Look for wild greens pie or cheese pie, the day's cooked dishes and meat grilled to order. Prasoselino, a leek and celery dish, is a good seasonal choice when it is on the menu. Ask what has been prepared that day, rather than automatically ordering only grilled dishes.
For a group of adults, a tsipouro tavern brings a different pace to lunchtime. Check whether meze comes with your drinks or is charged separately, and leave the driving to someone who is not drinking. For something sweet, try a local pastry shop for syrup-soaked pastries, melomakarona honey biscuits or kourabiedes almond biscuits, rather than limiting yourself to the park's options.
As a general guide, a simple meal may cost around €15 to €25 per person, while a more generous spread with drinks may come to around €25 to €40. Special festive menus often vary considerably. Ask in advance about prices, children's portions and kitchen hours, especially if you are planning a late meal after the Mill.
A three-day itinerary
Day 1
Arrive by midday, settle in and leave the car parked. Start with lunch in the centre, then explore the Lithaios and Asklipiou. If it is still light, take a first stroll through Varousi. Keep the afternoon relaxed, with coffee and time to rest. In the evening, head to Manavika, having already chosen where to eat. There is no need to squeeze the Mill in between arrival and dinner.
Day 2
Devote most of the day to the Mill of the Elves. Have breakfast before setting off and start with the activities that interest the children most. Take a break before tiredness sets in and leave shopping until the end. If the lights are your main priority, move your visit to the afternoon, bearing in mind that it may be busier.
Do not plan an ambitious evening out after several hours in the park. The approach of having one main experience each day, which also works well for Christmas in London with children, is just as useful here. A nearby restaurant and an early return to your room are often the best way to round off the day.
Day 3
Choose between the city and Meteora. If you stay in Trikala, combine the Tsitsanis Museum with Varousi, the Fortress and a final coffee by the river. If you head to Meteora, set off in the morning, visit one monastery that is open that day and make a few carefully chosen stops for the views. Check dress codes and access arrangements. If you are returning to Athens the same day, do not extend your outing until nightfall.
Where to stay
For a first visit, the central area around the Lithaios and Asklipiou is the most practical: you can get around on foot and return easily for a rest. Staying near Manavika puts restaurants on your doorstep, but check reviews for noise. If the Mill is your priority, compare the actual route to the park, not just the distance on the map.
On the outskirts, you will find options better suited to travellers with a car. The detailed guide to where to stay in Trikala helps you compare areas. If your trip includes more days in Meteora, also consider staying in Kalambaka or Kastraki, but factor in the evening journey back from the Mill.

Before paying, confirm heating, parking, bed types and the cancellation policy. If you are looking for a hotel with a heated pool at Christmas, ask specifically about winter opening, children's access and any additional charge. A pool appearing in the photographs is not enough.
December weather
December in Trikala is cold and often damp. As a rough guide, daytime temperatures are often around 7 to 12°C, while nights frequently drop to around 0 to 5°C. Temperatures can fall lower during cold spells. Fog, rain and frost are more useful possibilities to plan for than the hope of a white Christmas.
Snow in the city is not guaranteed. Wear layers, a waterproof jacket and shoes with good grip. Pack spare socks and gloves for children. Spending hours outdoors at the Mill is more tiring than a short city stroll, particularly after sunset.
Practical tips
- Bookings: Book accommodation and festive meals early, with clear cancellation terms.
- Parking: Use the areas signposted by the organisers and follow temporary traffic arrangements.
- Pushchairs: Helpful for covering distances, but crowds and wet paths require patience.
- Children: Agree on a meeting point and place a contact telephone number in an inside pocket.
- Accessibility: Ask specifically about accessible entrances, toilets and routes, both at the park and at your accommodation.
- Excursions: Check the forecast and road conditions before heading towards Meteora or mountain villages.
Keep a wet-weather alternative in mind too: a museum, a longer meal and fewer outdoor activities. If severe weather is forecast, check for possible changes to the Mill's opening arrangements before setting off. A flexible three-day break is better than a checklist you feel obliged to complete.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Mill of the Elves open?
Usually from late November to early January, around Epiphany. Exact dates and daily opening hours vary, so check the official programme for the year you are travelling.
Is entry to the Mill free?
General admission has traditionally been free, along with many activities. This does not mean that all rides, products or food are included. Check which activities carry a charge at this year's event before promising the children unlimited turns.
How many days do you need in Trikala at Christmas?
Three days with two nights is a good starting point for the Mill and the city. If you want to explore Meteora more thoroughly or take a mountain excursion, add another night so that travelling does not take over the whole trip.
Do you need a car in the city?
Not necessarily, provided you stay centrally and are comfortable walking. For the Mill, you can combine walking with a taxi or available public transport. A car becomes more useful if you stay on the outskirts or plan trips beyond Trikala.
What is the best time to visit with small children?
The first part of the day often makes for a less tiring visit, although school groups may be present. Early afternoon lets you combine some daylight with the evening illuminations. Expect larger crowds at weekends and on public holidays.
Is Trikala worth visiting at Christmas without children?
Yes, provided you treat the Mill as one stop rather than the entire trip. The Lithaios, Varousi, the Tsitsanis Museum, Manavika and a day trip to Meteora offer plenty for a three-day winter break as a couple or with friends.
