Christmas in Salzburg: markets and a 3-day guide
Christmas markets beneath the fortress, cosy cafés and walks through Mozart’s city. A practical guide to three days in Salzburg, with suggestions for food, accommodation and getting around.

Why visit at Christmas
In Salzburg, a Christmas stroll needs little planning: turn down a narrow street in the old town and you will find stalls selling decorations, steaming mugs and the illuminated cathedral behind them. Higher up, Hohensalzburg Fortress is a constant landmark. The real appeal is the compact scale. Many of the places you will want to see are close enough to move between markets, museums and cafés without constantly travelling across town.
Mozart’s birthplace combines Baroque architecture, music and a lively Advent tradition, the period leading up to Christmas. The markets have plenty of character, but they are not the only reason to visit. There are historic cafés, churches, concerts and views of the surrounding peaks. Snow suits the scene, though it is by no means guaranteed in the city.
Three days are enough for a first visit at a comfortable pace. If you are comparing Austrian destinations, our guide to Christmas in Vienna will help you choose between the grand capital and a smaller city where distances are more manageable on foot.
Getting there
From Athens and Thessaloniki, look for flights to Salzburg W. A. Mozart Airport, checking the winter timetable for your specific dates. Do not assume there will be a direct flight: availability changes from season to season. With one connection, often via a German airport, allow around 4 to 7 hours in total, provided the layover is reasonable. Cheaper combinations can take considerably longer.
Flying to Munich is a practical alternative. The flight itself takes around 2 hours 35 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes from Athens, and around 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes from Thessaloniki. From the airport, continue by rail, usually changing in Munich. Allow around 2.5 to 3.5 hours for this leg, depending on connections.
You can also fly to Vienna and continue by train. Flights take around 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes from Athens, and around 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes from Thessaloniki. The rail journey from Vienna Airport to Salzburg takes around 3 to 3.5 hours. From Salzburg Airport, buses connect the terminal with the city and main railway station in around 20 to 30 minutes.
The Christmas markets
The periods below are a general guide, not confirmed dates for a particular year. Before booking your trip, check the organisers’ announcements, especially for 24, 25 and 26 December. Some markets finish before Christmas, while others continue afterwards.
Salzburger Christkindlmarkt, Domplatz and Residenzplatz
The main market spreads across the squares around the cathedral and the former archbishops’ residence. It usually runs from late November until New Year’s Day, with changes to opening hours over the holidays. You will find decorations, crafts, sweet treats and hot drinks, alongside musical events depending on the programme. Visit once early in the day to shop, then return after dusk for the lights. Weekend afternoons get particularly busy.
Hellbrunner Adventzauber, Hellbrunn Palace
South of the centre, the grounds of Hellbrunn host one of the area’s most distinctive festive events, with illuminated trees and outdoor stalls. It usually opens from mid- or late November until Christmas Eve. Opening days and hours vary throughout the season. Check whether there is an admission charge and what it includes. Aim to arrive shortly before dark, having planned your return bus journey.
Mirabellplatz market
The market on Mirabellplatz, close to the palace and transport links on the newer side of the city, makes a convenient stop while exploring. It usually runs from late November until around Christmas Eve. Smaller than the main market, it is better suited to a short visit, a hot drink and a little shopping than an entire afternoon.
Sternadvent, near Getreidegasse
In the inner courtyard of Sternbräu, between Getreidegasse and Griesgasse, Sternadvent offers a more compact take on the Christmas market. It usually opens during November, while the event’s winter season may continue into early January. It fits neatly into a walk through the old town’s shopping streets. If traditional markets are your main reason for travelling, take a look at Christmas in Nuremberg for a different German experience.
Things to see and do
Head up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, by funicular or on foot when conditions allow. The views over the rooftops, the River Salzach and the surrounding landscape are worth scheduling early in the day, while the light is good. Fog reduces visibility, so keep your plans flexible. In winter, it is best to avoid steep paths when they are icy.
Getreidegasse, with its distinctive metal shop signs, is home to the house where Mozart was born. The museum explores the lives of the composer and his family and deserves a proper visit, rather than just a photograph of the façade. His later residence, the Mozart-Wohnhaus, is on the opposite side of the river. For a three-day trip, choose one of the two if you would rather not spend too much time in museums.
The cathedral and DomQuartier provide the historical context for the city of the prince-archbishops. The latter combines rooms in the Residenz, collections and unusual views into the cathedral. Allow around two hours rather than squeezing it in just before closing. For families, Haus der Natur is an appealing indoor option when the cold makes long stretches outdoors tiring.
Visit Mirabell too, but do not expect the gardens to look as they do in spring: access to some sections may be restricted because of the weather. In the evening, a classical concert feels more fitting than another hurried sightseeing stop. Check the venue, programme and duration before buying a ticket. If you enjoy a similar mix of historic streets and festive walks, keep Christmas in Prague in mind for a future trip.
What to eat and drink
At the markets, the first drink is usually Glühwein, or hot spiced wine. You will also find various types of Punsch, often alcoholic, and alcohol-free Kinderpunsch. Ask before ordering, as fruity aromas do not necessarily mean a drink is alcohol-free. As a rough guide, expect to pay around €4 to €7 for a hot drink, plus a separate deposit for the mug.
For a quick bite, you will find sausages, pretzels and sweet treats. For a sit-down meal, look for schnitzel, soups with noodles or dumplings, and Kasnocken, small dumplings with cheese and usually onion. A main course in a mid-range restaurant may cost around €18 to €32, depending on the type of meat and the location.
Salzburger Nockerl is the local dessert worth trying: a light, baked sweet with distinctive peaks, often large enough to share. Ask about preparation time and portion size. Mozartkugeln, chocolates with a filling combining marzipan and nougat, are an easier choice for gifts. For coffee and cake, the historic Café Tomaselli and Café Fürst are well-known stops, though you will need patience at busy times.
A 3-day itinerary
Day 1
Start on Getreidegasse and visit Mozart’s birthplace. Continue towards Universitätsplatz and the cathedral, leaving time for the arcades and little passageways. Have an early lunch and save the afternoon for the main Christmas market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz. Once the lights come on, wander through again without a shopping list. Finish the day with dinner in the old town, preferably with a reservation.
Day 2
Head up to Hohensalzburg in the morning, then come down for a walk around St Peter’s and Kapitelplatz. After lunch, take a short break rather than filling every hour with sightseeing. Set off for Hellbrunn in the early afternoon, provided the market is open that day. Keep your evening relaxed after returning, as standing around in the cold is more tiring than distances on a map might suggest.
Day 3
Cross to the other bank for Mirabell, its small market and Linzergasse. Depending on your interests, continue to the Mozart-Wohnhaus or head back for the DomQuartier. Leave your final afternoon for coffee, small gifts and Sternadvent. A concert makes a lovely finale if you are not leaving early. With children, swap one museum for Haus der Natur and cut back on consecutive market visits.
Where to stay
The Altstadt, or old town, suits anyone who wants to step out of their hotel and be close to the main markets straight away. It has plenty of atmosphere, but usually higher prices and restrictions on car access. The area around Mirabell offers a good balance of walkability, public transport and access to the station.
Andräviertel suits those who prefer a more everyday neighbourhood, with cafés and restaurants beyond the main tourist streets. Around the Hauptbahnhof, the setting is less picturesque, but the location is convenient for arrivals and day trips by train. For a more detailed comparison of areas, see where to stay in Salzburg.

Weather in December
December is cold and often damp, with a chance of rain, sleet or snow. As a guide, daytime temperatures are often around 2 to 6 degrees Celsius, while at night they may fall to around minus 4 to 0 degrees. These are general climate ranges, not a forecast for your trip. A blanket of snow in the city is not guaranteed.
Dress in layers, with a warm outer jacket, hat, gloves and waterproof shoes with good grip. Cobbled streets become slippery when wet or icy. It gets dark at around 16:00 to 16:30, so plan panoramic views for the first half of the day. Have an indoor alternative each day rather than basing your entire itinerary on good weather.
Practical tips
- Book the essentials early: Advent weekends are in high demand, particularly for centrally located rooms and popular restaurants.
- Check holiday opening hours: many shops close early on 24 December, while opening hours are significantly restricted on 25 and 26 December.
- Carry some cash: cards are widely used, but you should not assume smaller stalls will accept them.
- Remember the mug deposit: the Pfand is usually refunded when you return the mug to the designated points.
- Assess the Salzburg Card: work out which attractions and transport services you will actually use, checking current benefits and exclusions.
- Ask about the Guest Mobility Ticket: many accommodation providers in the state offer guests a public transport ticket, with conditions you should confirm before arrival.
- Avoid driving into the centre: pedestrianised streets, parking and festive traffic generally make a car unnecessary for a three-day city break.
If you are travelling with young children, plan short outings and frequent stops to warm up. Traditional Krampus appearances involve frightening masks and loud noises, so they will not suit every child. For comparison with a very different family destination, see our guide to Christmas in London with children.
Budget separately for accommodation, transport, admission fees and food. Salzburg is not usually a budget destination in December, but weekday stays and early booking help. If cost is the deciding factor, it is worth comparing specific dates with Christmas in Krakow or Christmas in Budapest, without assuming that every deal automatically works out cheaper overall.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit the markets?
The period from late November until around 23 December usually offers the widest choice. Choose weekdays for fewer crowds and confirm each market’s schedule, particularly Hellbrunn’s.
Are three days enough in Salzburg?
Yes, for the old town, the main sights and two or three markets. If you want a day trip or a more relaxed pace with children, add an extra day rather than cramming the itinerary.
Is snow guaranteed at Christmas?
No. It may snow, but rain and days without snow cover are also possible. Conditions differ in the surrounding mountain areas, but any outing requires a separate check of the forecast and access conditions.
Is everything open on 25 December?
No. Shops are generally closed, and restaurants, attractions and markets follow special opening hours. Book your Christmas meal and do not leave essential shopping until that day.
Do I need a car?
For a stay within the city, usually not. The historic centre is walkable, and public transport covers the main journeys, including access to Hellbrunn. Only consider a car for exploring further afield, taking winter conditions into account.
Should I combine Salzburg with Vienna?
Yes, if you have more days available. The rail connection is practical, but on a three-day trip, changing cities takes up valuable time. For a first visit, stay in Salzburg and leave room for walks without constantly watching the clock.
