Malta Airport to Valletta & Sliema: Bus, Taxi and Transfer Guide

Malta International Airport (MLA) sits in Luqa, just 8 km south of Valletta and about 12–14 km from Sliema and St Julian's. The short answer: for Valletta, the X4 public bus or a taxi gets you there in 15–25 minutes, while for Sliema, St Julian's and Paceville a direct bus with a reserved seat saves you the queues and the many stops of the public network.

Malta is a small island, but traffic around the harbour can double journey times, especially in summer and at rush hour. It pays to know in advance which option suits your arrival time, your luggage and the area where you are staying. Below you will find every way to get from Malta airport to the city centre, with indicative prices, journey times and practical tips.

Direct bus from Malta airport to Sliema

Sliema is where most visitors choose to stay: it has a long seafront promenade, plenty of hotels and restaurants, and a ferry to Valletta that takes about 10 minutes. The catch is that there is no fast public link from the airport. The X2 makes many stops and fills up with tourists' suitcases, so at peak times it may not even have room for you.

The Terravision bus from Malta airport to Sliema solves exactly that. You book a seat online, show the ticket on your phone and travel in a vehicle with luggage space, without hunting for change to pay the driver.

Where to find it

After baggage reclaim, walk into the arrivals hall and follow the signs for coaches and buses, located right outside the terminal. The exact boarding point is printed on your booking voucher, so keep it open on your phone.

Who it suits best

  • Anyone staying in Sliema, Gzira, St Julian's or Paceville.
  • Travellers with a large suitcase who do not want to squeeze onto a city bus.
  • Solo travellers and couples, for whom a taxi works out expensive.
  • Anyone who wants a fixed price booked in advance.

Public buses: X4 to Valletta, X2 to Sliema

Malta Public Transport runs the island's entire bus network. The airport stop is on the right as you leave arrivals and is served by the express (X) routes linking the airport with the main resorts.

The routes you need

  • X4: airport – Valletta (bus terminus at the City Gate). The fastest public connection, around 20–30 minutes.
  • X2: airport – Marsa – Gzira – Sliema – St Julian's – Paceville.
  • X1: airport – Mellieħa – Ċirkewwa (ferry port for Gozo).
  • X3: airport – Rabat – Buġibba.
  • Regular routes such as 71, 72, 73 and 117 also serve the airport, with more stops.

Tickets and cards

A single ticket costs around €2 in winter and €2.50 in summer, with night routes about €3. It is valid for two hours including transfers. Buy it from the driver (have change, or use contactless where supported) or at the Malta Public Transport desk in arrivals. If you will use buses a lot, the Explore card or a 12-journey card works out cheaper.

The drawbacks

Buses do not reserve seats, have limited luggage space and in summer often pass full. Traffic in Marsa and along the Gzira seafront slows the X2 considerably. If you land late at night, check the last departure, as express services thin out after midnight.

Taxis from Malta airport

The white airport taxis work on fixed fares by zone. You pay at the taxi desk in the arrivals hall and receive a receipt with the amount, so there are no surprises. As a guide, Valletta costs around €20–25 and Sliema or St Julian's €25–35, while Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa exceed €35.

Ride-hailing apps

Bolt, Uber and eCabs all operate in Malta and have a dedicated pick-up area in the airport car park. They are often cheaper than a taxi, but when many flights land at once prices rise and waiting times grow. For a group of three or four, a taxi or app ride is often better value than four bus tickets.

Renting a car at the airport

All major rental companies have desks in the arrivals hall. In Malta you drive on the left, roads are narrow and parking in Valletta and Sliema is difficult and often paid. If you are only staying around the harbour, you do not need a car from day one. If you plan to explore the island and Gozo, read our guide to renting a car in Malta for insurance, deposits and driving tips.

Which option to choose for your trip

  • Staying in Valletta with hand luggage: X4 bus, cheap and quick.
  • Staying in Sliema or St Julian's: direct pre-booked bus, without the X2's many stops.
  • Family with children and lots of luggage: fixed-fare taxi or private transfer.
  • Arriving after midnight: taxi or app, unless you have confirmed a night service.
  • Heading straight to Gozo: X1 to Ċirkewwa or a taxi, then the ferry.

Get to know the central areas before you land

When people say "the centre" in Malta, they usually mean one of two places. The first is Valletta, the capital, built by the Knights of St John after the Great Siege of 1565 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is compact, about a kilometre end to end, laid out on a grid with steep streets running down to the sea and the island's distinctive wooden balconies (gallarija). Here you will find St John's Co-Cathedral with its Caravaggio paintings, the Upper Barrakka Gardens overlooking the Three Cities and the Grand Harbour, and the Grandmaster's Palace.

The second "centre" is the Sliema – St Julian's strip, north of Marsamxett Harbour. Sliema began as a fishing village and is now the island's busiest shopping area, with large stores, cafés and a seafront walk running several kilometres to St Julian's. That is where you find Spinola Bay and Paceville, the heart of Malta's nightlife. From the Sliema Ferries on The Strand, a short boat ride takes you to Valletta in minutes, so staying in Sliema still gives easy access to the capital.

The distance from the airport is small in kilometres, but the roads pass through Marsa and Msida, where traffic is heavy on weekdays from 7:30 to 9:30 and 16:30 to 19:00. In summer, when the island welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors a month, a 25-minute ride can easily become an hour. Factor this into your plans, especially on the way back: leave at least 2.5 hours before your flight if you are staying in Sliema.

A few more practical points: the currency is the euro, plugs are the British three-pin type (bring an adapter) and English is an official language, so communicating with drivers is easy. For sights and itineraries, see our Malta travel guide and the article why Malta is famous.

Practical tips for your arrival

  • The airport has a single terminal, so you cannot get lost. Every option starts a few metres from the exit.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available to open your voucher or a taxi app.
  • If you are carrying a bike or bulky sports gear, the public bus is not an option; choose a transfer.
  • Summer temperatures exceed 30°C, and waiting at an unshaded stop is tiring with children.
  • For the return trip, book a return ticket or reserve a seat in advance so you do not depend on full buses.

Going back to the airport: what to watch out for

The trip back to the airport is usually more stressful than arrival, because there is a flight that will not wait. From Valletta, the X4 leaves from the bus terminus outside the City Gate and the journey is predictable. From Sliema and St Julian's it is harder: the X2 reaches stops already full, so in peak season you may have to wait for the next one. That is why many travellers book a return ticket on the direct bus from the start, so they have a guaranteed seat and a fixed departure time.

If your flight is very early, before 7:00, a taxi or app is realistically the only reliable option, as the first bus departures start later. Ask your hotel reception to book the taxi the night before. The airport is small and security moves quickly most of the time, but on summer Sundays and Mondays queues grow. Two hours before Schengen flights and two and a half for non-Schengen flights is a safe margin.

Finally, if you are joining a cruise, the cruise terminal (Valletta Waterfront) is about 9 km from the airport; a taxi takes 15–20 minutes and costs roughly the same as to Valletta.
