Why visit at Christmas
Christmas in Thailand means T-shirts, outdoor dining and illuminated shopping centres, rather than Europe's wintry atmosphere. You can spend the morning exploring Buddhist temples and the evening in front of a huge Christmas tree in Bangkok. The contrast is a big part of the experience: festive celebrations feature in the cityscape without shaping every aspect of daily life.
In a country with a predominantly Buddhist population, 25 December is not a national public holiday. Shops, restaurants and attractions generally open as usual, following their own opening hours. Hotels often organise festive dinners, while the main shopping districts go all out with decorations. If you are expecting wooden chalets and mulled wine like those in Europe's Christmas cities, you will find a different scene here.
December is also a good time to visit much of the country, particularly central Thailand, the north and the Andaman coast. Bangkok suits those looking for food and urban exploring, Chiang Mai offers a gentler pace, and Phuket is ideal for seaside holidays. For a first trip, choose two bases rather than trying to fit everything in.
Getting there
From Athens, you will usually find flights to Bangkok connecting through hubs such as Doha, Dubai or Istanbul. With a reasonable connection, allow around 13 to 17 hours in total. From Thessaloniki, via Istanbul or another combination of connections, allow around 14 to 19 hours. These times are a guide and can increase considerably with long layovers.
Phuket also has connections through major international hubs, without the need to stay overnight in Bangkok. Check whether flying into the capital and returning from Phuket works for you, to avoid backtracking. Over the festive period, it is worth comparing not just fares but also baggage allowances, arrival times and total journey times. A cheaper flight with an overnight layover could cost you a whole day.
Flights from Bangkok take around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes to Chiang Mai, around 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes to Phuket, and around 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes to Koh Samui. There is also an overnight train to Chiang Mai, usually taking around 12 to 14 hours; book your sleeper berth well in advance.
Be aware that Bangkok has two airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. Allow plenty of time to transfer between them, accounting for traffic and airport procedures. In the city, use the BTS and MRT, river boats where convenient, and taxis for other journeys. Allow at least half a day each time you move to a new base, even if the flight itself is short.
Christmas events and markets
In Bangkok, centralWorld in the Ratchaprasong area is a reliable spot for festive decorations, with a large tree and light installations. The festive season usually runs from November to early January. The theme, individual events and lights switch-on dates vary, so check this year's programme. It is easy to combine with an afternoon walk towards Siam and Chit Lom.
ICONSIAM, on the banks of the Chao Phraya, also has festive decorations and events towards the end of the year. The same venue hosts the well-known Amazing Thailand Countdown New Year celebration. This marks the turn of the year, not Christmas night, and the programme is announced annually. If you are staying until then, check access arrangements, bookings and restrictions, as the riverside area attracts large crowds.
Local markets do not necessarily become Christmas markets. Chatuchak Weekend Market, near Mo Chit and Chatuchak Park stations, is a large general market operating mainly on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, roughly from morning until late afternoon. You will find clothes, ceramics, decorative items and food. Go early, take water and do not expect to explore the whole market.
Asiatique The Riverfront, on Charoen Krung Road, combines shops, dining and evening strolls beside the river. It operates throughout the year, mainly from late afternoon into the evening, with opening hours varying by business. In Chiang Mai, the Sunday Walking Street takes place every Sunday on Ratchadamnoen Road, within the old town, from late afternoon into the evening.
In Phuket's old town, Phuket Sunday Walking Street, known as Lard Yai, sets up on Thalang Road every Sunday, roughly from the afternoon until late evening. It is a good choice for snacks and a little shopping, rather than a Christmas market. This distinction matters if you are comparing your trip with the world's best-known Christmas markets: in Thailand, festive celebrations and traditional markets are often separate experiences.
What to see and do
In Bangkok, start with the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, preferably early in the day. Continue to Wat Pho with its huge reclining Buddha, then cross the river to Wat Arun. You do not need to squeeze everything into one morning. The heat, queues and entrance checks make sightseeing more tiring than the distances on the map might suggest.
Leave time for a simple boat ride on the Chao Phraya and an evening walk through Yaowarat, the city's Chinatown. For a change of pace, Jim Thompson House combines architecture, a garden and art collections. A Thai cookery class is another rewarding activity, especially if it includes a market visit and explains the ingredients rather than simply following recipes.
In Chiang Mai, make time for Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, the cafés and the lanes of the old town. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, on the mountain above the city, calls for a separate outing. If you want to spend time around elephants, carefully assess each operator's practices and avoid riding, shows and forced interaction with the animals.
In Phuket, you can alternate beaches such as Kata and Nai Harn with walks among the old town's Sino-Portuguese buildings. Boat trips depend on conditions, even in the best season. If you would prefer a base near limestone formations and trips to Railay, explore the areas to stay in Krabi too, without hastily adding it to an already packed itinerary.
What to eat and drink
Pad thai is only the beginning. Try tom yum, a hot and sour soup, tom kha with coconut milk, green curry and pad kra pao, stir-fried meat with holy basil, often served with a fried egg. Som tam, a green papaya salad, can be very spicy. Ask for less chilli when ordering, but do not assume the result will be completely mild.
In the north, look for khao soi, with noodles, curry broth and coconut milk, and sai ua, Chiang Mai's aromatic sausage. In Phuket, try mee Hokkien and moo hong, slow-cooked pork in a distinctive sweet and savoury sauce. For dessert, there is mango sticky rice when available, along with coconut sweets from stalls with a high turnover.
For drinks, fresh coconut water, iced Thai tea and juices are easy choices, although many drinks contain plenty of sugar. As a guide, a simple meal at a stall or small eatery might cost around 60 to 150 baht, while a meal in a casual restaurant might cost around 180 to 450 baht per person, excluding expensive drinks. Tourist areas and festive hotel menus push the bill up considerably.
Choose busy places where food is cooked in front of you. If you have allergies, clear communication is essential: peanuts, shellfish, fish sauce and shrimp paste feature in many recipes. For Christmas dinner, confirm the menu, deposit and cancellation policy before booking.
3-day itinerary
The following itinerary covers three full days in Bangkok, not the whole of Thailand. It works well as the first part of a longer trip before heading north or to the beach. After an overnight flight, keep your arrival day relaxed rather than launching straight into an exhausting sightseeing schedule.
Day 1
Start early at the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. Have lunch nearby and continue to Wat Pho, allowing time for shade and water breaks. In the afternoon, cross to Wat Arun if you can get there within visiting hours. Finish the day with dinner near the river, without feeling obliged to book an expensive cruise. The view from the riverbank is reason enough to linger a little longer.
Day 2
Spend the morning at Jim Thompson House, then explore the Siam area. Take a break during the hottest hours and return towards Ratchaprasong as dusk falls to see centralWorld's decorations. In the evening, choose either a booked festive dinner or food in Yaowarat. Do not try to fit in both experiences as well as shopping in several malls.
Day 3
If it is the weekend, head to Chatuchak early. Otherwise, choose a cookery class or a leisurely walk through the neighbourhoods around Charoen Krung. In the afternoon, head to ICONSIAM or Asiatique, depending on whether you prefer a shopping centre or an outdoor riverside stroll. Avoid too many commitments on your final evening, especially if you are flying to an island the next day.
Where to stay
In Bangkok, areas near BTS and MRT stations make daily travel easier. The old town is convenient for historic sights, while the river offers a different pace and views. Distance from a station often matters more than a small difference in price. The guide to where to stay in Bangkok will help you compare the areas.
In Chiang Mai, the old town and the area around Tha Phae Gate are convenient for exploring on foot. In Phuket, decide first whether you want a beach or town base: staying in Phuket Town does not mean you can walk to the beach for a swim. Explore the areas to stay in Phuket before choosing purely on the basis of photographs.
On Koh Samui, Chaweng Noi and Lamai offer different styles of seaside stay, but December calls for flexibility because of the weather. For help choosing your bases overall, consult the guide to where to stay in Thailand. For the options below, check room types, transfers and any compulsory festive dinner before completing your booking.

Weather in December
In Bangkok, temperatures usually range from around 22 to 32°C, with less rain than during the rainy season. In Chiang Mai, expect around 15 to 29°C, with noticeably cooler conditions in the mountains and early in the morning. A light jacket is useful in the north, as well as on planes and in heavily air-conditioned indoor spaces.
Phuket and Krabi usually see temperatures of around 24 to 31°C and more favourable beach conditions, though uninterrupted sunshine is not guaranteed. Koh Samui has a different rainfall pattern and can still be quite rainy in December. For a trip focused on the sea, the Andaman coast is usually the safer seasonal choice, but always check the local forecast and beach flags.
Practical tips
- Documents: Before departure, check the current entry requirements for Greek passport holders, the required passport validity and the TDAC digital arrival card through the official service.
- Bookings: The days around Christmas and New Year are a period of high demand, especially at seaside resorts and on domestic flights.
- Money: Keep baht handy for markets and small shops, check cash withdrawal fees and choose to pay in the local currency when offered currency conversion.
- Temples: Cover your shoulders and knees, remove your shoes where requested and follow the rules on photography and behaviour.
- Health: Pack sunscreen and insect repellent, and take out travel insurance that covers your activities. Speak to a doctor in good time for personalised advice.
- Driving: Traffic drives on the left, and hiring a scooter requires the appropriate licence, insurance cover and a helmet, not simply the hire company's agreement.
Thailand is five hours ahead of Greece in December. Allow time to adjust and avoid booking early-morning activities immediately after arrival. Also, if someone outside an attraction insists it is closed and suggests an alternative route involving shops, confirm the information at the official ticket office.
Frequently asked questions
Is Christmas celebrated in Thailand?
Yes, mainly in shopping centres, hotels and tourist areas, with decorations and special dinners. It is neither a national public holiday nor a religious celebration for most of the population, so daily life usually carries on as normal.
Which area is best for the beach in December?
Phuket, Krabi and the Andaman coast in general usually have more favourable weather at this time of year. Koh Samui has a higher chance of rain, although that does not mean every day will be unsuitable for swimming.
How many days do you need for the trip?
For a first visit, around ten to fourteen days allows for two bases and a reasonable amount of time to relax. If you have one week, keep travel between places to a minimum. The three days in the itinerary cover Bangkok only and do not include international flights.
Is Thailand expensive at Christmas?
Local food and many everyday journeys can remain affordable. However, flights, seaside hotels and festive dinners add to the budget. Compare the total cost, including baggage, transfers and any compulsory charges, before deciding.
Is it a suitable destination for families?
Yes, provided you adapt your itinerary to the heat and distances. Choose fewer bases, take regular breaks and opt for beaches with suitable conditions. For transfers with young children, request a child seat well in advance and confirm that one is available.
Do you need to book Christmas dinner?
For organised hotel dinners and popular restaurants, booking early is sensible. If you prefer simple local food, you will usually have more flexibility. Check whether your room booking includes a compulsory festive meal, especially if you are staying until New Year.
