Christmas in Switzerland: Zurich, Lucerne and Christmas markets

Why visit at Christmas

Christmas in Switzerland smells of mulled wine, melted cheese and roasted chestnuts. In Zurich, Bahnhofstrasse lights up and the market stalls get busy as people finish work. In Lucerne, your stroll takes you across wooden bridges, through squares lined with painted façades and beside a lake whose winter appearance shifts with the mist. The beauty of it is that you do not have to choose between a city break and Alpine views.

For a first visit, Zurich and Lucerne make a practical combination for a three-day trip. They are easily connected by train, have walkable centres and offer plenty of options when it rains. You do not need a car or a different hotel every night. Zurich works well as a base, with Lucerne as a day trip, unless you would prefer to spend a night there.

If you are comparing Europe's most festive cities, Switzerland stands out mainly for its combination of markets, reliable public transport and nearby mountain excursions. It is expensive, though, and snow in the city is not guaranteed. Go for the overall experience, rather than necessarily expecting snow-covered rooftops on Christmas morning.

Getting there

Flights from Athens and Thessaloniki

There are direct flights from Athens to Zurich, with an estimated flight time of around 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours. From Thessaloniki, when a direct service is available on your dates, allow around 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes. Frequencies vary by season, so check the winter schedule before booking accommodation. With a connection, the total journey often takes 4 to 7 hours or more.

Geneva is an alternative gateway for a trip to western Switzerland, with direct flights from Athens taking around 3 hours. For a Zurich and Lucerne itinerary, however, flying into Zurich usually saves time. When comparing fares, factor in baggage, airport transfers and arrival time: a cheaper evening flight could cost you almost a whole day.

The airport and travel between cities

Zurich Airport's railway station connects to the main station, Zürich HB, in around 10 to 15 minutes. From there, direct trains to Lucerne usually take 40 to 50 minutes. There are also direct services from the airport to Lucerne, taking just over an hour, which are useful if you want to start there.

In Zurich, you can get around by tram, bus and train, while Lucerne's main sights are close to the station. The SBB app helps with timetables, platforms and tickets. A car offers no real advantage on this three-day trip, as it adds parking costs and the possibility of driving in difficult winter conditions.

The Christmas markets

Zurich: the station, opera house and old town

The Christkindlimarkt takes place in the main hall of Zürich HB. It is indoors and convenient for a first wander after arrival or on a rainy day. It usually runs from the second half of November until Christmas Eve, with different opening hours on the final day. You will find decorations, handicrafts, sweets and plenty of options for something warm to enjoy as you browse.

The Wienachtsdorf is set up on Sechseläutenplatz, in front of the Opera House, close to the lake. It has a strong food focus, wooden chalets and more room to wander than the narrow streets of the old town. It usually runs from late November until shortly before Christmas, often until 23 December. Aim for early afternoon on a weekday if you are travelling with children or prefer to avoid crowds.

In Niederdorf, on the right bank of the Limmat, the market spreads through parts of the old town, around Niederdorfstrasse and small squares. A visit here is best combined with cafés, bookshops and small shops rather than a hurried walk through. It usually runs from late November until just before Christmas or Christmas Eve.

Another stop is Werdmühleplatz, known for the Singing Christmas Tree and its choir performances. Performances take place at set times, which do not necessarily match the opening hours of the stalls. If this is your main interest, take a look at these famous Christmas markets for ideas and different European settings.

Lucerne: Franziskanerplatz and Rudolf’s

Lucerne's traditional Christmas market takes place on Franziskanerplatz. It is smaller and ideal for a leisurely browse among stalls selling decorations, food and hot drinks. It usually runs from early December until around the middle or latter part of the month, rather than throughout the festive season. This matters if you are planning to arrive very close to 25 December.

Rudolf’s Weihnacht is usually held at Inseli, near the station and the lake, with an emphasis on food and fondue. Its season generally starts in November and lasts until shortly before Christmas. All the periods above are indicative: confirm the official dates for the year of your visit, as many markets have already closed by the time Christmas leave begins in Greece.

Things to see and do

In Zurich, start by the Limmat and head into the old town. Lindenhof offers lovely views of the river and the façades opposite without a strenuous climb. Continue towards Grossmünster and Fraumünster, the latter known for its stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall. Check visiting hours, especially on days with church services, and bear in mind that access to some areas may require a ticket.

Bahnhofstrasse is worth visiting after dusk for its festive lights, even if you have no plans to shop. For cold or rainy weather, keep Kunsthaus Zürich and the Swiss National Museum, beside the main station, as alternatives. Lindt Home of Chocolate is in Kilchberg, outside the centre, so allow extra travelling time. During the festive season, it is wise to book an entry slot in advance.

In Lucerne, cross Kapellbrücke and walk along the Reuss to Spreuerbrücke. The bridges, Weinmarkt and Hirschenplatz squares, and the buildings' painted façades are enough to fill a morning. The Lion Monument is slightly beyond the busiest tourist area and is easy to include in a walking tour.

If the sky is clear, consider a trip to Rigi or Pilatus, but do not assume you can simply add it to an already full day. Winter timetables and available routes up the mountains differ from those in summer, while some transport services close seasonally or for maintenance. For families, the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne is a good option that does not depend on visibility at the summits.

What to eat and drink

Fondue is the classic dinner to share: melted cheeses in a communal pot, bread and time to linger at the table. Raclette is an easier market option, with melted cheese served over potatoes with accompaniments. Do not treat both as light starters before a full dinner. They are filling, especially when your stroll also involves a sausage or something sweet.

In Zurich, try Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, thinly sliced veal in a creamy sauce, often with mushrooms, usually served with rösti. In Lucerne, look for Luzerner Chügelipastete, a rich puff pastry pie with a meat filling and sauce. For something quick, bakeries and supermarket ready meals help you avoid turning every stop into an expensive sit-down meal.

At the stalls, you will find Glühwein, hot spiced wine, and often non-alcoholic punch. Pair them with roasted almonds, chestnuts or Christmas biscuits such as Mailänderli and Zimtsterne. As a guide, allow around 8 to 18 CHF for market food, 5 to 9 CHF for a hot drink and 30 to 50 CHF per person for restaurant fondue, usually excluding drinks.

A three-day itinerary

Day 1: Your first walk around Zurich

Leave your luggage at the hotel and start at the main station, with a short stop at the Christkindlimarkt if it is open. Walk towards Lindenhof and head down to the Limmat. Have lunch in the old town, stop for coffee and continue to Niederdorf, without trying to fit all the city's sights into a few hours.

After dark, walk along the illuminated Bahnhofstrasse and visit Werdmühleplatz if a choir is performing. End the evening with fondue at a restaurant you have booked in advance. If your flight arrives late, stick to the station market and dinner: the old town is worth seeing in daylight too.

Day 2: A full day in Lucerne

Take a morning train and start with the lake and Kapellbrücke. Continue into the old town, through the squares with their painted façades and on to Spreuerbrücke. After lunch, choose between the Lion Monument and more time by the water. If the rain persists, replace part of your walk with a visit to the Museum of Transport.

Spend the afternoon at the Franziskanerplatz market or Rudolf’s, depending on opening dates. Return to Zurich after dinner, or earlier if you are travelling with young children. A mountain excursion could replace much of this day, but it cannot comfortably be combined with a full sightseeing tour and visits to both Christmas markets.

Day 3: A museum, chocolate and the lake

Choose one main attraction for the morning: Kunsthaus, the National Museum or Lindt Home of Chocolate. Then head towards the lake and Sechseläutenplatz for the Wienachtsdorf, if it is still open. Leave time to buy chocolate and enjoy a relaxed meal before departure. Do not plan a visit outside the centre just before your flight.

This itinerary works best before the markets close. For travel from 24 to 26 December, replace closed events with walks and attraction visits whose opening hours you have confirmed. If you are still choosing a destination, compare its pace with Christmas in Vienna, where your itinerary can focus more on a single city.

Where to stay

For this three-day trip, the area around Zürich HB is particularly convenient for the airport and your day trip. Altstadt suits those looking for atmosphere and walkability, but check access with luggage and the possibility of noise at night. Seefeld offers easy access to the lake and the Opera House. You can compare areas in our guide to where to stay in Zurich.

In Lucerne, choose the old town or the area near the station. Lakeside options outside the centre require a closer check of transport links. Interlaken and Geneva are for an extended trip or a different route, not extra stops on the same three-day itinerary. See our overview of where to stay in Switzerland and, for a trip further west, the best areas to stay in Geneva. The options below cover several bases, not just this particular route.

  • Fred Hotel Hauptbahnhof: Suits those who want to stay beside Zurich's main railway hub for easy arrivals and excursions. Check availability on Booking
  • Hotel Schweizerhof Zürich: Worth considering for a more traditional style of accommodation, but check the exact location in the listing before finalising your route. Check availability on Booking
  • Hotel Gotthard: Suits travellers looking for a central Zurich base close to Bahnhofstrasse and rail connections. Check availability on Booking
  • Grand Hotel National Luzern: Suits a more luxurious festive stay in Lucerne, with a lakeside setting and historic character. Check availability on Booking

  • Hotel du Nord: Suits a stay in Interlaken near Höhematte, with easy access to walks along the town's main thoroughfare. Check availability on Booking
  • Hotel Bernerhof Interlaken: A practical choice for travellers who prioritise access to Interlaken West station. Check availability on Booking
  • Warwick Geneva: Suits a separate Geneva itinerary thanks to its location near Cornavin station. Check availability on Booking

Weather in December

In Zurich and Lucerne, typical December temperatures range from around minus 2 to 6 degrees Celsius, with variations depending on weather conditions. Dampness, fog and wind near the lake often make it feel colder. Snowfall is possible, but snow settling in the centre is not guaranteed and it may melt quickly.

Pack waterproof shoes with good grip, warm socks, gloves and layers. It gets dark early, at around 16:30 to 17:00, so plan lake visits and viewpoints for the first half of the day. Conditions in the mountains are considerably harsher: check the forecast and lift operations that morning, not just when you first book.

Practical tips

  • Currency: Payments are in Swiss francs, CHF, and it is usually better to choose payment in the local currency rather than conversion to euros at the terminal.
  • Costs: As a guide, a mid-range room for two in a central area may cost around 180 to 350 CHF per night, with higher prices at peak times.
  • Train tickets: Compare standard tickets, discounted tickets tied to specific services and day passes, rather than assuming a multi-day pass automatically offers better value.
  • Public holidays: Many shops close earlier on 24 December, while opening hours and services are significantly reduced on 25 and 26 December.
  • Mobile phones: Switzerland is not necessarily included in the European roaming allowance of your Greek mobile plan, so check charges before switching on mobile data.
  • Documents: Greek citizens need a valid travel document accepted for entry, either a passport or a suitable identity card under the current rules.
  • Bookings: Book Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners well in advance, and let the restaurant know about any allergies or dietary requirements.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit the markets?

Early to mid-December is usually the safest choice for finding several markets open at the same time. Do not assume they will still be running after 23 or 24 December.

Are three days enough for Zurich and Lucerne?

Yes, for a first taste, using Zurich as a base with one full-day excursion. If you want a mountain trip, more museums or an unhurried overnight stay in Lucerne, add one or two days.

Will I see snow at Christmas?

It is not guaranteed in the cities. The chances increase at higher altitudes, but even then you need to check actual conditions and access before setting off.

Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?

It depends on your journeys and sightseeing plans. For just one return trip from Zurich to Lucerne and limited local travel, carefully compare the total cost with individual tickets and available offers.

Is this a suitable trip for children?

Yes, if you keep walking distances short and take frequent breaks somewhere warm. Indoor markets and museums help, while a weekday afternoon is usually more manageable than a busy Saturday evening.

Can I visit Switzerland on a budget?

You can keep costs down by booking early, choosing simpler accommodation near public transport and buying meals from bakeries or supermarkets. Switzerland remains an expensive destination, so cut unnecessary journeys rather than squeezing in more cities.
