Christmas in New York: markets and a 3-day guide
The Rockefeller Center tree, festive markets and brightly lit neighbourhoods set the scene for December in New York. A practical guide to flights, sightseeing, accommodation and three full days in the city.

Why visit at Christmas
In New York, the first signs of December appear on the pavements: people carrying shopping bags and coffees, queues outside department stores, ice skates slung over shoulders. Then you look up and see the tree at Rockefeller Center, decorations on building façades and lights above the avenues. The appeal is not just the spectacle, but the chance to fit museums, theatre, bookshops and neighbourhoods with completely different characters between your festive stops.
Go prepared for the other side of the experience too: expensive accommodation, crowds and cold that makes itself felt after hours of walking. The period before Christmas week often offers a more manageable experience, though lower prices are not guaranteed. If you are comparing destinations, Europe's Christmas cities tend to have more compact historic centres. Here, the festivities spread across different neighbourhoods, so you need to be selective rather than race around.
Getting there
There are direct flights from Athens to the New York area, serving JFK or Newark, depending on the airline and season. Allow around 10.5 to 11.5 hours for the flight to the USA. Not all routes operate year-round, so check the winter timetable carefully. With a connection at a European hub, the total journey usually takes around 13 to 17 hours, or longer with an extended layover.
From Thessaloniki, you will generally travel with at least one connection, via Athens or another European airport. A sensible connection takes around 13 to 18 hours in total. Choose a single through-ticket and avoid tight connections in winter. On your first day in New York, do not book a show or non-refundable activity immediately after your scheduled arrival.
From JFK, the AirTrain connects with the subway and the Long Island Rail Road. From Newark, rail connections to Manhattan combine the airport transfer service with a train. Check for engineering works and service changes before you leave. To reach a Midtown hotel, allow around 60 to 100 minutes by public transport from the time you leave the airport. Taxi journeys are heavily affected by traffic. Within the city, the subway and walking are the most practical combination.
Christmas events and markets
Rockefeller Center and Radio City
The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is the city's most recognisable festive sight. The lights are usually switched on in late November or early December, and the tree remains in place for a while after New Year's Day. Check this year's schedule for dates and lighting times. Viewing is free, but skating at the ice rink is not. For a less crowded visit, try an early weekday morning, having first confirmed that the lights will be on.
Nearby, the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes takes place at Radio City Music Hall, usually from November to early January. This is a full theatrical production with allocated seats and performance times, not an outdoor event. Book ahead and check the running time, bag restrictions and age guidance. The festive window displays along Fifth Avenue round off the walk, but decorations and any projections onto building façades change each year.
Bryant Park, Union Square and Columbus Circle
The Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park, between Fifth and Sixth Avenue, features an ice rink, food and Holiday Shops. The stalls usually operate from late October to early January, while the ice rink stays open later into the winter. Entry to the market area is free. The rink advertises free admission to the ice, but skate hire and other services carry a charge, and you should check the booking conditions.
The Union Square Holiday Market takes place in Union Square Park, usually from mid-November to Christmas Eve. It is a good choice for handmade items, small gifts and a stroll that can easily continue towards Greenwich Village. The Columbus Circle Holiday Market is at the south-western entrance to Central Park and runs roughly from late November to Christmas Eve. Confirm this year's dates, holiday closures and opening hours for both.
The markets here are more a series of stops around the city than the sole reason for the trip. Our guide to famous Christmas markets explores different versions of this tradition. If you are expecting the concentration of stalls and Central European atmosphere associated with Christmas in Nuremberg, adjust your expectations: in New York, shops, shows and neighbourhoods play an equally important part.
The illuminated homes of Dyker Heights
In Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, residents decorate their house fronts and gardens with impressive displays. The best-known area to explore lies roughly between 11th and 13th Avenue and 83rd and 86th Street, though there are no official, fixed boundaries. Visit from early to late December, after dark but not too late. There are no shared opening hours, as these are private homes. From Midtown, allow around 60 to 90 minutes each way by subway and on foot.
Things to see and do
Plan your walks by area. In Midtown, you can combine Rockefeller Center, St Patrick's Cathedral, Fifth Avenue, Bryant Park and Grand Central Terminal. Grand Central's main concourse is worth a stop for its ceiling and architecture, but it remains a busy station. At the New York Public Library, beside Bryant Park, check which rooms are open to visitors and whether a guided tour is required.
For views, choose one observation deck; you do not necessarily need to visit several. Top of the Rock offers a lovely perspective on the Empire State Building and Central Park, while the Empire State Building is a historic attraction in its own right. Book with the forecast in mind: low cloud and fog can severely limit visibility. The hour before sunset lets you watch the city light up, but it is popular and often more expensive.
Central Park is a good choice on a clear morning, with a short walk from its southern end to Bethesda Terrace. For a proper break from the cold, choose the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA or the American Museum of Natural History, depending on your interests. Do not assume that everything opens on 25 December. Later in the day, a Broadway show offers a change of pace from constant outdoor sightseeing.
In Lower Manhattan, the 9/11 Memorial deserves time and respect, rather than a hurried photo stop. Continue towards the harbour or cross the Brooklyn Bridge only if the wind allows. With children, keep long journeys to a minimum and plan one main activity per half-day. Frequent indoor breaks are as useful here as they are at Christmas in London with children.
What to eat and drink
Start with a bagel and cream cheese, adding smoked salmon if you want a more filling breakfast. At lunchtime, a slice of New York pizza is a practical option between stops. For a more substantial meal, try a pastrami sandwich at a deli, bearing in mind that portions can be large. Katz’s Delicatessen on the Lower East Side is a historic choice, but the festive queues require patience and will not fit comfortably into every itinerary.
For something sweet, cheesecake, cookies and hot chocolate are best enjoyed during a seated break rather than in yet another queue on the street. The markets offer a range of cuisines and seasonal drinks, though quality and portion sizes for the price vary between stalls. A quick meal might cost around $12 to $25 per person, while a sit-down meal might be around $30 to $60, before drinks, tax and tips.
For Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, book a restaurant early and read the cancellation terms. Many restaurants serve special menus, while others close. Chinatown may offer options on those days, but you should still check opening hours. At restaurants with table service, a tip of around 18% to 22% is customary. First check whether a service charge has already been added to the bill.
3-day itinerary
Day 1
Start at Rockefeller Center and St Patrick's Cathedral before the crowds build up. Walk along Fifth Avenue, then continue to the library and Bryant Park. Spend time browsing the stalls and eat nearby rather than crossing the city for a particular restaurant. In the afternoon, choose Grand Central or an observation deck. Return after dark to see the illuminated tree. If you have booked the Rockettes, leave plenty of time for food, entry checks and delays caused by the crowds.
Day 2
Take a morning walk in Central Park, then head to a museum. The Metropolitan works best with the eastern side of the park, and the Museum of Natural History with the western side. Do not try to see the entire collections: choose specific galleries. In the afternoon, visit the market at Columbus Circle, if it is open during your stay. Keep the evening for Broadway or a quiet dinner. A brief stop at Times Square is enough, especially if you find bright lights and crowds tiring.
Day 3
Head down to Lower Manhattan for the 9/11 Memorial and a walk around the Financial District. If you want to visit the museum, allow a substantial amount of time and cut back on your other stops. In good weather, continue towards the Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO. For the evening, choose Dyker Heights, bearing in mind that it is not close to DUMBO. Alternatively, return to Manhattan for Union Square and Greenwich Village. Do not try to squeeze both options into the same day.
This itinerary covers three full days in the city, not a trip that includes the transatlantic flights. For a more relaxed first visit, book more nights. If you only have time for a short festive break from Greece, Christmas in Vienna involves considerably less travelling time.
Where to stay
Midtown is convenient for a first visit, as several festive sights are within walking distance. Around Times Square, you have plenty of subway lines and theatres, but also more noise and traffic. The Financial District is a good base for Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, with quieter spots in the evening, though you will need to travel to Rockefeller Center and Central Park. Compare distances to a specific station, rather than relying solely on the neighbourhood name.

Weather in December
Typical average December temperatures in New York range from around 0 to 7°C, though cold spells can bring much lower readings. The wind is particularly noticeable on bridges and near the water. Rain, sleet and snow are all possible, but a white Christmas is not guaranteed. Sunset falls at roughly 16:25 to 16:40, so plan parks and outdoor walks for earlier in the day.
Pack a warm coat, thermals or other practical layers, a hat, gloves and waterproof shoes with good grip. Indoor spaces are often quite warm, so clothes you can easily take off are more useful than an excessively heavy outfit. Check the forecast daily and move your longest outdoor walk to the mildest day.
Practical tips
- Documents: With a Greek passport, you may be able to travel under the Visa Waiver Program, provided you meet all the requirements and have an approved ESTA; otherwise, you will need an appropriate visa.
- Insurance: Choose travel insurance with substantial cover for medical expenses in the USA and read the exclusions.
- Subway: OMNY accepts contactless payments; consistently use the same card or device and check its current fares and rules.
- Bookings: Prioritise your hotel, popular shows, festive dinner and activities with timed entry.
- Public holidays: On 25 December, museums, shops and public transport operate different hours, while some markets have already closed.
- Payments: Displayed prices often exclude tax, so compare final totals and check your card's foreign currency fees.
- Daily planning: Have an offline map, a charged phone and a little extra time for security checks, queues and changes to transport services.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to visit for the Christmas atmosphere?
The first few weeks of December are a good choice, as the main markets are usually open and the tree lights have been switched on. Confirm the lighting ceremony date first, and avoid basing your entire trip around a single event.
Are three days enough in New York?
They are enough for a selective festive itinerary, but not for a comprehensive introduction to the city. With the long flight and time difference, four to six full days offer a more comfortable pace and some flexibility for bad weather.
Do I need a ticket to see the Rockefeller Center tree?
Viewing from the surrounding publicly accessible areas is free. Skating, the observation deck and other experiences require separate bookings. Special access arrangements apply on the night of the lighting ceremony, when particularly large crowds are expected.
Are the Christmas markets open after 25 December?
Not all of them. Union Square and Columbus Circle usually close on Christmas Eve, while the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park generally continue into early January. Check this year's calendar for each market separately.
Is Dyker Heights worth visiting without an organised tour?
Yes, if you are comfortable using the subway and walking around a residential neighbourhood. Organised transport offers convenience, not exclusive access to the lights. Stay on the pavements, do not enter gardens and respect the residents.
Is this a suitable trip for a family with children?
Yes, with a realistic itinerary and a hotel close to public transport. Combine one festive stop with a museum or another indoor activity each day. Long queues, the cold and the evening journey back from Brooklyn need particular planning.
