Why visit at Christmas
Christmas in London is not confined to a square lined with wooden chalets. It stretches along the illuminated curves of Regent Street, through department store windows, into pubs that fill up early and along the banks of the Thames. The appeal lies in the variety: you can walk among decorated buildings and, when you feel cold, find yourself just minutes from a museum, a theatre or a cosy place to eat.
The city is best suited to those who want a festive atmosphere alongside a proper city break, rather than just markets. Compared with Christmas in Vienna, the experience here is more spread out, more theatrical and often more expensive for transport and accommodation. For a first visit, three full days offer a good introduction, but a fourth makes it easier to fit in museums and trips further afield.
If your dates are flexible, choose weekdays from late November to mid-December. The decorations are usually in place and the crowds are smaller than in the final days before Christmas. At weekends, especially from late afternoon onwards, popular spots get very busy.
Getting there
There are direct flights from Athens to London, with an estimated flight time of around 3 hours 50 minutes to 4 hours 15 minutes. From Thessaloniki, where direct services are available depending on airline schedules, allow around 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours. Frequencies, operating days and arrival airports change, so check the specific winter timetable.
Heathrow is served by the Elizabeth line, the Piccadilly line and the Heathrow Express. Gatwick has rail connections to stations including Victoria and London Bridge, depending on the service. From Stansted, trains terminate at Liverpool Street, while the usual route from Luton combines the Luton DART with a train from Luton Airport Parkway.
Do not compare airfares alone. Add baggage, airport transfers and a possible taxi for a very early or late journey. Depending on your arrival airport and hotel, reaching your base can take around 45 to 100 minutes, excluding border checks and baggage collection. London is two hours behind Greece in December.
The Christmas markets
The dates below are approximate, based on the events' usual operating periods, rather than a confirmed calendar for every year. Before booking tickets, check this year's dates, opening hours and any closure days. Some markets finish before New Year, while others continue into early January.
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
Hyde Park hosts the city's largest and liveliest festive event, usually from mid-November to early January. It includes a market, fairground rides, food and themed activities. This is not simply somewhere for leisurely shopping: expect music, queues and plenty of people. Entry is organised into time slots, with prices depending on when you visit, while many activities cost extra. Book what you genuinely want to do, rather than an overloaded package.
Southbank Centre Winter Market
On the south bank of the Thames, near the Southbank Centre and Waterloo, this market usually runs from early November to late December, with some festive activities occasionally continuing longer. Come here mainly for street food, a hot drink and a riverside stroll. The best time is just before dusk, so you can also watch the light change over the bridges.
Christmas by the River
The London Bridge City area, around Hay’s Galleria and along The Queen’s Walk towards Tower Bridge, usually hosts a Christmas market from mid-November to early January. The event's name and format may change from year to year. Its strength is its location: small gifts, food and views of Tower Bridge all come together in one walk, without a major detour from the main sights.
Leicester Square Christmas Market
Leicester Square usually hosts a market from early November to early January, with seasonal treats, crafts and festive performances that vary each year. Its position between Soho and Covent Garden is convenient, but the limited space fills up quickly. Visit on a weekday in the early afternoon. If traditional markets are the main reason for your trip, compare the experience with Christmas in Nuremberg, where they play a more central role.
What to see and do
Start on Regent Street and continue to Carnaby Street, where the decorations often follow a different theme each year. Oxford Street is a bustling shopping destination, but mornings are better for a more comfortable walk. Covent Garden is worth visiting for both its market decorations and the surrounding lanes. Seven Dials makes a lovely next stop, with a more intimate feel and plenty of places to pause.
The Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square, a gift from Norway to London in gratitude for British support during the Second World War, offers a different experience from the commercial displays. Combine it with the National Gallery, whose permanent collection is free to visit, although you may need to book a time slot. The British Museum and Tate Modern are also good choices for cold or rainy weather, with separate tickets required for some exhibitions.
For a planned evening out, choose a West End musical or Christmas at Kew, the illuminated trail through the botanical gardens. The latter requires a ticket and travel time, so treat it as the evening's main activity rather than a last-minute addition. Seasonal ice rinks also open, but their locations and operating dates are not the same every year.
With younger travellers, one major activity a day is enough. A double-decker bus ride and a little time looking at window displays can work better than a succession of paid attractions. Our guide to Christmas in London with children offers ideas for a more family-friendly pace. Allow time for toilet breaks, snacks and getting back before everyone is exhausted.
What to eat and drink
The classic festive meal is turkey with roast potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, gravy and often cranberry sauce. You will find it on Christmas menus in pubs and restaurants, though not necessarily everywhere every day. Pigs in blankets, small sausages wrapped in bacon, are a common accompaniment. If you want the full meal on 25 December, book well in advance and read the deposit terms.
For a small treat, try mince pies, sweet pastries filled with dried fruit and spices, not meat despite the name. Christmas pudding is richer and often contains alcohol. At the markets, mulled wine, hot cider and hot chocolate dominate, alongside sausages, cheeses and plenty of international flavours. Afternoon tea can make a lovely break, provided you budget for it as a full meal and an outing in its own right.
As a rough guide, allow around £8 to £16 for market food, £5 to £9 for a hot festive drink and £20 to £40 per person for a pub meal, depending on what you order. Many restaurants add an optional service charge. Check the bill before leaving an additional tip.
3-day itinerary
The following itinerary covers three full days when transport and attractions are operating normally, not 25 December. Keep the outdoor sections flexible so you can change the order if it rains heavily.
Day 1
Start in Trafalgar Square and spend some time in the National Gallery without trying to see everything. Continue to Covent Garden for decorations, small shops and lunch. In the afternoon, walk through Seven Dials and Soho towards Carnaby Street and Regent Street. Once the lights come on, the route takes on a charm that can be lost in the morning shopping bustle. Round off the day with a show or dinner, leaving plenty of time between them if you do both.
Day 2
Head to Westminster in the morning to see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben from outside, then cross Westminster Bridge. If you want to ride the London Eye, book a time slot, bearing in mind that the views depend on the weather. Continue along the South Bank, stop at the Southbank Centre market and walk towards Tate Modern. With stops along the way, this riverside route can easily fill the day. If you still have the energy, finish at the market near Tower Bridge; otherwise, use public transport for the final stretch.
Day 3
Choose a museum for the morning, such as the Natural History Museum or the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington. Have lunch nearby, then head to Hyde Park for Winter Wonderland with your entry booked in advance. If rides and crowds do not appeal, replace it with a walk around Marylebone and a quiet afternoon in a pub. Christmas at Kew is an alternative evening outing, but keep the rest of the day light and check your return journey carefully.
Where to stay
Covent Garden is convenient for a first visit, theatre trips and exploring on foot. Soho suits those looking for food and nightlife, although you may have to accept some noise. The South Bank is a good base for the river and family outings, provided you check exactly which station is nearby.
Tower Hill and the City are convenient for exploring the eastern sights, while Holborn strikes a good balance between museums and the West End. For a fuller comparison, see where to stay in London. In December, it is often worth paying a little more to stay near a Tube station rather than spending time changing services every day.

December weather
Typical temperatures range from around 3 to 9°C, although frost and milder days are both possible. Damp conditions and the wind beside the Thames make it feel colder. Rain is a frequent possibility, while snow in central London is not something you can plan your trip around.
Pack a waterproof coat, waterproof shoes, gloves and layers, as indoor spaces are warm. It gets dark at around four in the afternoon, so plan panoramic views earlier and leave the festive lights for later. If you are considering an alternative destination with thermal baths for the colder hours, take a look at Christmas in Budapest too.
Practical tips
- Documents: For a standard tourist visit, Greek citizens need a valid passport and, unless exempt, a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA); check the current rules before you leave.
- 25 December: Do not rely on the usual public transport network, as the Tube, regular buses and most rail services do not run.
- Paying for transport: Use the same contactless card or device throughout your journey, with a separate payment method for each adult.
- Tapping correctly: On the Tube, touch in and out; on buses, touch in only when boarding.
- Public holidays and engineering works: Check routes for 24 to 26 December and New Year, as services may run to reduced timetables and planned works may affect journeys.
- Mobile phones and electricity: You will need a UK Type G plug adaptor and should check your roaming plan, as charges depend on your provider.
Leave room in your budget for transport and food, not just your room. Many museums and the illuminated streets offer free options, but tickets for shows and attractions quickly increase the total. If you are comparing festive trips on a limited budget, Christmas in Krakow deserves a place on your shortlist.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit for the Christmas atmosphere?
From late November to mid-December, the decorations are usually up and the markets open, without the full pressure of the final days before Christmas. Weekdays are more comfortable for exploring.
Is it worth being in London on 25 December?
Yes, if you want a quiet festive day with a walk near your hotel and a meal booked in advance. No, if you expect normal transport services, open shops and a full sightseeing schedule. Plan this day separately from the rest of your trip.
Do the Christmas markets require tickets?
Many central markets are free to enter. Winter Wonderland uses an entry booking system, while rides, shows and other activities may cost extra. Check each event separately before visiting.
Are three days enough for a first visit?
They are enough for the main festive spots, one or two markets and selected sights. They are not enough for all the major museums, excursions and several shows. Choose what genuinely interests you and avoid unnecessary journeys.
Is London suitable for children in December?
Yes, with short journeys, frequent breaks and a mix of outdoor and indoor activities. Avoid the busiest market hours and check age or height restrictions before paying for rides and shows.
Can I see the highlights without paying for expensive activities?
Certainly: illuminated streets, Thames walks, decorated squares and the permanent collections of major museums can fill a lovely three-day break. The biggest savings come from booking accommodation early and choosing your airport and transport carefully.
