Why visit at Christmas
At Christmas in Dubai, you can fit a dip in the sea, a stroll among skyscrapers and a festive market with a huge tree into a single day. There is no winter chill here: instead, expect palm trees, outdoor dining and afternoons when you can finally walk around without the intense summer heat. December is one of the most pleasant months to explore the city, but also one of the most popular.
Although Christmas is not an official public holiday in the United Arab Emirates, hotels, shopping centres and entertainment venues put up decorations and organise festive meals and family activities. Do not expect an entire old town filled with Christmas cheer, though, as you might find in Europe's most festive Christmas cities. Here, the celebrations are spread across specific venues, often quite far apart.
The destination is particularly well suited to anyone looking for good weather, plenty of dining options and a mix of city and beach. It does, however, require careful budgeting and planning around distances. The most common mistake is to pack each day with sights at opposite ends of Dubai, only to spend much of it in taxis and queues.
Getting there
Direct flights from Athens to Dubai International Airport take approximately 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours. From Thessaloniki, check whether a direct service is available on your chosen dates, as schedules change. Where available, allow around 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes. With a connection via Athens or Istanbul, the total journey often takes around 7 to 11 hours, depending on the layover.
Before booking, check the airport code. DXB has metro stations at Terminals 1 and 3, while Al Maktoum International, airport code DWC, is considerably further south and requires different transfer arrangements. Arriving in Abu Dhabi is not the same as arriving in Dubai either: it adds a substantial road journey.
From DXB, a taxi to Downtown usually takes around 20 to 40 minutes, and to Dubai Marina around 35 to 60 minutes, or longer at peak times. The metro is useful for travelling along the city's main corridor, using a nol card. Travelling between Downtown and the Marina by public transport often takes around 40 to 60 minutes, plus walking time. For Madinat Jumeirah, the beaches and journeys back at night, taxis and ride-hailing apps are a handy complement to the network.
Christmas events and markets
The main festive events return regularly, but their dates, tickets and activities do not necessarily stay the same. Check this year's programme before planning a whole day around an event. Old photographs and previous opening hours are not confirmation that it is running.
Madinat Jumeirah Festive Market
The festive market at Madinat Jumeirah, in the Jumeirah area near the Burj Al Arab, is one of the city's best-known Christmas attractions. It usually takes place in December, from around the middle of the month until shortly before New Year. Wooden chalets, a large tree and family activities fill the complex around Fort Island.
Arrive before dark to leave time for a stroll along the canals and through Souk Madinat Jumeirah. General admission has been free in previous years, but individual rides, food and activities cost extra. Confirm this year's arrangements. Unlike traditional Christmas markets around the world, here the coastal setting and the architecture of the complex are as much a draw as the stalls.
Winter City at Expo City Dubai
Expo City Dubai has hosted Winter City, with festive installations and activities around Al Wasl Plaza. Events usually take place in December, sometimes continuing into early January. The programme, duration and admission arrangements vary, so look for an announcement for the year of your visit. The Red Line metro service to Expo 2020 station is a practical option, but the journey from the centre is not short.
Global Village and Dubai Shopping Festival
Global Village opens during the cooler months, usually from around October to April or May, with international pavilions, food and entertainment. It is not a Christmas market, but it is a popular winter evening outing. It is a long way from Downtown and the Marina, so plan both your outward and return journeys.
Dubai Shopping Festival usually takes place in December and January, with shopping offers and entertainment events. Concerts, light shows and any fireworks are announced for each edition. Do not assume that a particular show will take place on Christmas Day. If you are mainly looking for historic squares and rows of stalls in the city centre, Christmas in Vienna is closer to what you have in mind.
What to see and do
Downtown and Burj Khalifa
Downtown brings together the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and walks around the lake. Book the observation deck in advance, especially for sunset. Choose a ticket that clearly states which floors are included, and allow time for security checks and queues. Check the current operating status and schedule for Dubai Fountain performances, as works or unexpected changes can affect the programme.
Dubai Mall is a useful stop for food, shopping and a rest, but it is not somewhere you can cross in a few minutes. The link from the metro station involves a fair amount of walking. If you have children, choose one main activity rather than trying to fit the aquarium, ice rink and observation deck into the same day.
Al Fahidi, the Creek and traditional souks
In the historic Al Fahidi neighbourhood, wind towers, courtyards and narrow passageways offer a very different view of Dubai from its skyscraper-lined avenues. Continue towards Dubai Creek and cross to Deira in a traditional abra boat. The short trip is worth taking both for the views and for the bustle of everyday life around the landing stages.
At the Gold Souk and Spice Souk, you will find jewellery, spices, perfumes and lively trading. Ask for prices, compare options and confirm weight and quality before buying. The traditional souks are not Christmas markets, but they are more rewarding if you want to discover the city's trading side.
Beach and desert
For time by the sea, choose the JBR area or Kite Beach, depending on where you are staying. For a desert excursion, choose an organised operator with clear information about pick-up, duration and activities. Dune bashing is not suitable for everyone, particularly pregnant travellers or people with back problems. Gentler experiences are available, provided you ask before booking.
What to eat and drink
Dubai's food scene is best explored beyond hotel restaurants. In the old part of the city, seek out Emirati dishes such as machboos, spiced rice with meat or fish, and luqaimat, small fried dough balls served with sweet syrup. Arabic coffee with cardamom and dates makes a lovely quiet break in Al Fahidi.
The city's everyday food also includes shawarma, Lebanese mezze, and Indian and Pakistani dishes. A karak chai makes a simple, quintessential stop between walks. As a guide, a casual meal might cost around AED 25 to 60 per person, while a meal at a mid-range restaurant might be around AED 80 to 180, depending on what you order.
On Christmas Day, many hotels and restaurants offer festive brunches or dinners. Book early and ask exactly what the package includes, whether children are charged differently and which drinks are covered. Alcohol is served in licensed venues and cannot be freely consumed in the street or on public beaches. A festive meal with a view can be lovely, but it need not become the most expensive must-do of your trip.
Three-day itinerary
Day 1
Start in Al Fahidi fairly early, before it gets busy. Take a coffee break, walk towards the Creek and cross by abra to Deira for the souks. Eat in the area and leave some time to return to your hotel, especially if you arrived on a late-night flight.
In the afternoon, head to Downtown. If you want to go up the Burj Khalifa, book a specific time without making the journey from the old town too rushed. Finish with a walk around the lake and dinner. Do not add a trip to a distant market that evening: the first day already involves plenty of travelling.
Day 2
Spend the morning at Dubai Marina and JBR beach. The waterfront promenade is ideal for a leisurely start, coffee and, weather permitting, a swim. Eat early and avoid booking activities that will keep you in the area until late.
Then head to Madinat Jumeirah, ideally before sunset. Explore the souk and spend the evening at the Festive Market, if it is open during your visit. The Marina and Madinat are not connected by a short seafront walk: allow for a journey by car and possible traffic on arrival.
Day 3
Save the final day for one major outing. If you prefer the desert, leave the morning free and book an afternoon excursion with a confirmed pick-up. If you are more interested in festive events, visit Expo City when Winter City is running and plan your departure around the published opening times.
Global Village is an alternative evening outing, not an essential addition after everything else. With children, one organised activity a day is often enough. The same principle helps on other family trips, such as Christmas in London with children: plan breaks, not just sights.
Where to stay
Downtown and neighbouring Business Bay suit anyone wanting easy access to the Burj Khalifa and central sightseeing. Sheikh Zayed Road is practical when your accommodation is genuinely close to a metro station. Check the walking route on a map, as a major road can make a seemingly short distance difficult to cover.
Dubai Marina suits a trip built around the beach, evening walks and plenty of restaurants. Deira usually offers more affordable options, easier access to Old Dubai and a shorter journey from DXB, but longer trips to the south. Our guide to where to stay in Dubai compares the areas in more detail. For the festive period, choose cancellation terms that give you flexibility.

Weather in December
Typical daytime temperatures in December are around 24 to 28°C, while evenings often drop to around 16 to 20°C. The sea usually remains pleasant for many visitors, at around 23 to 26°C. That does not guarantee summer conditions: wind, cloud or brief showers are possible.
Pack light clothing, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable shoes, along with a cardigan for evenings, the desert and strong air conditioning. If the pool is a key reason for choosing a hotel, ask whether it is heated in December and what its opening hours are. Confirmation matters more than a beautiful photograph, as it does whenever you are looking for hotels with heated pools at Christmas.
Practical tips
- Documents: You need a passport, not a Greek identity card. Greek passport holders can enter for short tourist stays without obtaining a visa in advance, but confirm the current conditions and required passport validity before travelling, usually at least six months.
- Bookings: Flights, accommodation, popular observation decks and Christmas meals need advance planning. Check whether the final room rate includes all taxes and local charges.
- Currency: The currency is the UAE dirham, AED. Cards are widely accepted, but a little cash is useful for small purchases and traditional transport.
- Connectivity: Check roaming charges or consider a local SIM or eSIM. Some internet voice-calling services are restricted, so do not rely on them alone.
- Etiquette: Swimwear belongs at the beach and pool. Follow the specific dress code at religious sites, and ask permission before photographing people.
- Safety: Take out travel insurance with medical cover and check the rules for bringing in prescription medicines, especially controlled medication.
- Operating hours: The metro does not run around the clock. Confirm the last departure and keep an alternative in mind for returning from events further afield.
Frequently asked questions
Is Christmas celebrated in Dubai?
Yes, with decorations, festive markets, meals and events at hotels and entertainment venues. It is not an official public holiday, so everyday life continues as usual and most shops stay open.
Can we swim in the sea?
Usually yes, especially around midday when it is sunny. How comfortable it feels depends on the wind and your own tolerance. Always follow safety flags and lifeguards' instructions, even if the sea looks calm.
Is a Christmas trip expensive?
It is a period of high demand, especially for accommodation and popular restaurants. You can keep costs down by choosing accommodation near a metro station, simple local meals and a few selected paid attractions, rather than organised packages every day.
Are three days enough for a first visit?
Three full days are enough for Old Dubai, Downtown, the beach and one main festive outing. For the desert, Expo City, Global Village and more time to relax, four to five days allow a much more comfortable pace.
Do we need to hire a car?
Usually not for a short first trip. The metro, tram and taxis cover the essentials without the worry of parking and tolls. A car makes more sense if you are planning several trips outside the city or staying somewhere far from public transport.
Where will we find the most Christmassy atmosphere?
The Festive Market at Madinat Jumeirah is one of the most distinctive choices. Winter City at Expo City also offers a festive experience when it is held. Confirm dates and ticket arrangements, as neither necessarily runs throughout December.
