Christmas in Drama and Oneiroupoli

Oneiroupoli sets the festive mood, but Drama is also worth visiting for the springs of Agia Varvara, its food and nearby excursions. A practical guide to three winter days, with advice on transport, accommodation and family visits.

Christmas in Drama and Oneiroupoli

Why visit at Christmas

In Drama, Christmas has a clear focal point: the Municipal Garden and Eleftherias Square, home to Oneiroupoli. The illuminated huts, children's activities and music draw crowds into the centre, but there is more to the city than the event. Just a few minutes on foot brings a change of scenery, taking you to the waters of Agia Varvara, among old tobacco warehouses and peaceful walking routes.

That is also the main reason to stay longer than an afternoon. Drama combines family festivities, short city strolls, good food and trips to caves, archaeological sites and wineries. You do not need to fill every hour. A second, more leisurely visit to Oneiroupoli is often more rewarding than another drive.

If you are comparing Christmas holiday destinations, the advantage here is practical: the main sights are within walking distance, and the festivities put participation at their heart. Couples can enjoy a relaxed three-day break with wine and excursions, while families are better served by short distances and frequent stops somewhere warm.

Getting there

Driving from Athens and Thessaloniki

From Athens, allow for around 650 to 700 kilometres, depending on the route, and roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving without stops. Breaks, holiday traffic and winter weather will add to the overall journey time. The usual route follows the main road towards Thessaloniki before continuing towards eastern Macedonia.

From Thessaloniki, the distance is around 145 to 160 kilometres, with a typical journey time of 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. A car is particularly useful if you want to visit Alistrati, Philippi or the surrounding villages. For a three-day stay entirely within the city, however, you can leave it parked.

By KTEL coach or a combination of train and coach

By KTEL coach from Athens, allow roughly 8 to 10 hours, depending on stops and the particular service. From Thessaloniki, departing from Macedonia Intercity Bus Station, the journey usually takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Check departure times, the boarding point in Athens and holiday services directly with KTEL Drama.

Rail travel requires care: do not assume that a passenger service is running between Thessaloniki and Drama. Regional rail services have undergone changes. From Athens, you could consider taking a train to Thessaloniki, around 5 to 6 hours when the relevant service is operating, then continuing by KTEL coach. Including the transfer to the coach station and waiting time, allow around 9 to 12 hours overall, without assuming a guaranteed connection. Confirm everything with Hellenic Train and KTEL before booking.

Oneiroupoli is within Drama, not in a separate village. Allow around 10 to 15 minutes to walk from Eleftherias Square to Agia Varvara, depending on your starting point. If you are staying on the outskirts, arrange your evening return in advance, especially if you are relying on taxis.

Christmas events and markets

Oneiroupoli has been held in Drama since 2004 and is the city's main Christmas event. Its principal setting is the Municipal Garden and neighbouring Eleftherias Square. It usually runs from early December to early January, but exact dates, opening hours and activity locations are announced separately each year.

For Christmas 2026, check this year's Oneiroupoli programme and announcements from the Municipality of Drama. Do not plan your visit around old concert listings. The programme usually includes live music, children's workshops, storytelling, creative activities and meetings with Father Christmas. Individual activities, age requirements and times may change.

Admission to Oneiroupoli and many of its organised activities have traditionally been free. This does not mean that every purchase, game or service in the wider area is included at no charge. Food, drinks, products and any activities run by third parties cost extra. Read the notices on site before joining a queue.

The shopping side is linked to the event itself and the city centre around Eleftherias Square. Festive stalls and sales outlets operate during Oneiroupoli, according to each year's layout. For gifts, you can also browse the regular shops in the centre, bearing in mind festive opening hours and public holidays.

This is not a copy of the large Christmas markets of central Europe. Compared with well-known Christmas markets around the world, the emphasis here is more on children's participation and a city-wide celebration. If you are expecting rows of shopping chalets like those at Christmas in Nuremberg, adjust your expectations to Drama's different character.

Plan two visits: one early in the day for activities and another after dark for the lights. Friday evenings, weekends and days with major performances are noticeably busier. The site being open does not mean that every hut keeps the same hours throughout.

Things to see and do

Agia Varvara springs and old Drama

The springs of Agia Varvara are worth exploring without a particular destination in mind. Water, little bridges, trees and buildings linked to the tobacco trade create a setting quite unlike the festive square. Go in the morning for more peace and quiet, or just before nightfall, when the lights come on and their reflections transform the scene.

Continue into the lanes of the old town and look for the surviving sections of the Byzantine walls. Drama does not have a single, intact historic centre. Its appeal lies in the contrasts: old houses, newer blocks of flats, tobacco warehouses and small shops along the same route. Watch out for wet, slippery patches near the water.

Archaeological Museum and Philippi

Drama's Archaeological Museum adds valuable context to your visit, with finds spanning the region's prehistory and later historical periods. It is a good choice for a cold morning, not simply a fallback when it rains. Check winter opening hours and holiday closures, as these do not necessarily match Oneiroupoli's opening times.

For a longer outing, the archaeological site of Philippi, near Krinides, is around 25 to 35 minutes away by car. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it deserves time for its theatre, Roman forum and early Christian monuments. Plan an early visit, as winter daylight and opening hours limit the time available.

Alistrati, wineries and Falakro

Alistrati Cave makes an easy day trip, around 35 to 45 minutes from Drama by car. Visits are organised, so confirm tour times, last admission and holiday opening arrangements. Combine it with a meal in the area rather than trying to fit in a second major excursion.

The Drama region has a significant wine industry and well-known estates. A winery visit adds interest to a three-day break, provided it has been arranged in advance. Tastings are not necessarily available without a booking, particularly over the festive period. Choose a designated driver who will not drink, or arrange alternative transport.

Falakro suits those looking for mountain scenery, but skiing should not be taken for granted. Snow, access and the operation of the ski resort depend on conditions. Check the road situation on the day and keep a lower-altitude alternative in mind.

What to eat and drink

Start with bougatsa or a savoury pie and coffee, especially if you plan to spend several hours outdoors. For your main meal, look for Macedonian cooking, slow-cooked dishes, grilled meats and meze. Asia Minor and Pontic influences are part of the region's culinary identity, although that does not mean every taverna serves the same dishes.

If you come across sarmadakia, handmade pies or Pontic specialities, ask what is being prepared that day. Pork is a fitting choice for a festive meal, while sausages and hot meze work well for sharing. For something sweet, choose from melomakarona, kourabiedes and syrup-soaked pastries, without feeling the need to seek out a supposedly 'exclusive' local speciality.

The region offers plenty of wine choices, from crisp whites to full-bodied reds. Ask for a wine from Drama to suit your food and budget. It is also worth asking whether a local wine is available by the glass, so you can try it without ordering a whole bottle.

For families, a proper meal before an evening at Oneiroupoli makes things easier. Children will not be waiting hungrily in queues, and snacks can remain an extra rather than a necessity. For Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Saturday evenings, book ahead and ask whether a special menu applies.

A three-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrive, settle in and leave the car behind. Take an introductory stroll from Eleftherias Square towards Agia Varvara, stopping for food or coffee. Do not try to squeeze in a museum if you have already spent several hours travelling. The aim is to get a feel for the distances and settle into the city's rhythm.

In the late afternoon, head to Oneiroupoli for the lights and your first choice of activities. Check the next day's programme and note what genuinely interests your group. Finish the evening with dinner, leaving enough time for an unhurried return.

Day 2

After breakfast, visit the Archaeological Museum if it is open, then continue into the old town. Families prioritising the activities can reverse the order and visit Oneiroupoli first, according to the individual opening times. Do not assume that all activities open at once.

Keep the middle of the day for lunch and a rest at your accommodation. Return in the afternoon only for anything you missed or for a particular event. As with a Christmas trip to London with children, a warm break along the way is more helpful than an overloaded itinerary.

Day 3

Choose one excursion: Alistrati for the cave, Philippi for history, or a winery by prior arrangement. If you are returning to Athens, set off early and avoid detours that add significantly to the day. If you are staying another night, you can eat outside the city and return at leisure.

Kavala is around 40 to 50 minutes away by car and works better as an extension to your trip than a rushed addition. For an extra overnight stay, see where to stay in Kavala. In bad weather, skip the excursion and spend the day enjoying coffee, shopping and a final stroll around Drama.

Where to stay

For a first visit, choose the centre, close to Eleftherias Square and the Municipal Garden. You can reach Oneiroupoli without searching for parking and return easily for a rest. The Agia Varvara area is particularly appealing if you want a lovely morning walk and a more atmospheric setting while staying close to the centre.

Accommodation on the outskirts is better suited to those with a car who are planning excursions. Check the address carefully: a property in the wider area is not necessarily within the city. Our detailed guide to where to stay in Drama lets you compare areas before choosing a room.

Weather in December

December in Drama is cold and damp, with possible rain and morning fog. As a general guide, temperatures often range from around 0 to 10 degrees Celsius, although lower temperatures and frost are possible. Snow in the city is not guaranteed, nor can it be predicted at the start of the season.

Pack waterproof shoes with good grip, warm socks, gloves and layers. Waiting outdoors for an activity feels colder than walking continuously. For children, spare gloves and dry socks in your bag are useful. Check the forecast again shortly before departure, especially if you are planning a mountain trip.

Practical tips

  • Book early for popular dates. Weekends during the event see increased demand, especially for family rooms.
  • Confirm the parking arrangements. A reference to parking near the hotel does not mean a reserved private space.
  • Save the daily programme. This will help you avoid unnecessary trips between activities that open at different times.
  • Agree on a meeting point. In the crowds, a clear, fixed meeting point helps, as does ensuring younger children carry a contact phone number.
  • Ask about accessibility. Crowds, cables covered by ramps and wet surfaces can make things harder for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
  • Check the heating and booking conditions. For families, the actual bed layout and cancellation options matter.

If you would like accommodation with added opportunities to unwind, also compare hotels with heated pools at Christmas, but confirm opening hours, age restrictions and any extra charges directly. Having wellness facilities does not always mean unrestricted access for every guest.

Frequently asked questions

When does Oneiroupoli open?

It usually runs from early December to early January. Exact dates and opening hours are announced each year, so check the programme for your intended travel period before arranging transport.

Is admission to Oneiroupoli free?

Admission and many organised activities have traditionally been free. Purchases, food and some additional services cost extra, so read the relevant information for each activity.

How many days do you need in Drama at Christmas?

Two nights and three days allow you to see the city, visit Oneiroupoli twice and take one nearby excursion. If you are travelling from Athens, an extra night makes the trip less tiring.

Do you need a car in the city?

Not necessarily, provided you are staying centrally and are comfortable walking. Oneiroupoli, the shopping streets and Agia Varvara are easy to combine, while a car is very useful for excursions or accommodation on the outskirts.

Is Oneiroupoli suitable for young children?

Yes, its family-friendly character is a key part of its appeal. Choose age-appropriate activities, avoid the busiest times and plan for meals, toilet stops and breaks somewhere warm.

Will there be snow at Christmas?

There is no guarantee of snow in Drama. The chances increase at higher altitudes, but access and activities depend on the weather. Plan your trip around the city and the event, rather than making snowfall your only reason for visiting.
