Christmas in the Canary Islands: a holiday guide

In the Canary Islands, the Christmas tree might stand beside palm trees, and lunch might be served at an outdoor table. It is not summer, but nor is it the winter we are used to in Greece. This Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic, off north-west Africa, offers mild days by the sea, towns with everyday life in full swing and celebrations that continue until Three Kings' Day in January.

For a first Christmas visit, Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the most straightforward choices: they have a wide range of accommodation, established transport networks and plenty to do even if you never go for a swim. This guide focuses on these two islands, without suggesting you squeeze both into three days.

Why visit at Christmas

The first reason is simple: you can spend much of the day outdoors. A walk along Las Canteras in Las Palmas, or along the Costa Adeje seafront, does not usually call for heavy winter clothing. In the evenings, illuminated shopping streets and outdoor events remind you that you are in Spain during the festive season, rather than in an isolated seaside resort.

The second reason is variety. In Tenerife, you can combine the beach, a historic town and the volcanic landscape of Teide. In Gran Canaria, the city life of Las Palmas is relatively close to mountain villages and the dunes of Maspalomas. One trip can therefore suit both those looking to unwind and those who get bored on a sunlounger by day two.

There is, however, an important difference from Europe's Christmas cities: large markets of wooden chalets and mulled wine are not the main attraction here. Nativity scenes, family outings, concerts and Three Kings parades set the tone. If browsing market stalls in the cold is exactly what you are after, Christmas in Vienna is a better fit.

Getting there

From Athens and Thessaloniki, the practical option is usually a connecting flight, often via Madrid, Barcelona or another European hub. Do not plan your trip assuming there will be a direct service: seasonal schedules change. From Athens, allow around 8 to 12 hours in total with a convenient connection. From Thessaloniki, allow around 9 to 14 hours, while journeys with two changes may take longer.

Tenerife has two airports. Tenerife Sur, airport code TFS, is particularly convenient for southern resorts such as Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. Tenerife Norte, TFN, is near La Laguna and is useful for the north and many connections with mainland Spain. In Gran Canaria, LPA airport lies between Las Palmas and the southern resorts.

The drive from Tenerife Sur to Costa Adeje takes around 20 to 30 minutes without heavy traffic. From Gran Canaria Airport, allow around 25 to 35 minutes to Las Palmas and around 25 to 40 minutes to Maspalomas. Buses are available, but the total journey time depends on stops and waiting times.

There are flights of around 30 to 40 minutes between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as well as ferries. Fast ferries between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Agaete usually take around 80 minutes, while other services take longer. Factor in getting to the port, boarding and the transfer from Agaete to Las Palmas. For a two-island trip, allow at least six to seven nights.

Christmas events and markets

The sand nativity scene at Las Canteras

The Belén de Arena de Las Canteras is one of Gran Canaria's most distinctive Christmas events. Large sand sculptures depict the Nativity on Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas. It usually runs from early December until the first few days of January, around Three Kings' Day. Check this year's programme to confirm dates, opening hours and admission arrangements.

Combine your visit with a walk along the promenade and a meal nearby. It is a good choice for families, but allow time for possible queues on busy days. Sun and wind are still factors even in December, so bring water and a light jacket.

Crafts and gifts for Three Kings' Day

The Feria de Artesanía de San Telmo, in San Telmo park in Las Palmas, is an established local craft fair held in early January, before Three Kings' Day. Do not assume this market will be open if you are travelling only before Christmas. You will find work by local makers, with the exact mix of exhibitors changing each year.

In Tenerife, the Ferias de Artesanía en Reyes traditionally take place in early January in Santa Cruz and La Laguna. The usual venues are Plaza del Príncipe and Plaza del Adelantado respectively, but confirm this year's locations and dates. For a December trip, look for announced municipal markets rather than relying on older lists.

Concerts, lights and parades

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the port authority's Christmas concert, known as the Concierto de Navidad de Puertos de Tenerife, is a long-standing tradition at the harbour, usually on Christmas Day. Confirmation of the event, admission arrangements and other details are announced separately each year. Check this year's programme before making it a main reason for your visit.

On 5 January, the Cabalgatas de Reyes parades bring the Three Kings to the streets of cities such as Las Palmas and Santa Cruz. Routes and times vary, and 6 January is a public holiday. If you are comparing this trip with well-known Christmas markets, keep this difference in mind: in the Canaries, the festive high point often comes after New Year.

What to see and do

Tenerife: Teide, La Laguna and the coast

Teide National Park deserves a full day's outing. The journey takes you through striking changes of scenery before reaching the volcanic terrain and rock formations around Roques de García. In winter, however, the high altitude means cold weather, possible snow and potential road restrictions. Check conditions and do not set off in beachwear.

The cable car is weather-dependent and does not take you all the way to the summit. The final summit trail requires the relevant permit, and access rules need to be checked well in advance. Exploring the lower parts of the park can make for an equally rewarding day, without a demanding climb.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, with its UNESCO-listed historic centre, is ideal for discovering grand houses, courtyards and cafés, and taking an evening stroll through illuminated streets. In the south, Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos offer easy walks beside the sea. For whale and dolphin watching, choose a licensed operator that observes distance and approach rules, and do not assume any particular sighting is guaranteed.

Gran Canaria: city, dunes and inland scenery

In Las Palmas, start in Vegueta, around Plaza de Santa Ana, and continue into the shopping district of Triana. Casa de Colón provides historical context for the islands' links with transatlantic routes. Check museum opening hours over the festive period, particularly for 25 December and 1 January.

In Maspalomas, follow the designated routes through the protected dunes and continue towards the lighthouse. For a change of scenery, Tejeda offers mountain landscapes and almond pastries. Inland roads are winding: short distances on the map do not always mean a quick drive. Avoid packing too many far-flung stops into the same day.

What to eat and drink

Order papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in heavily salted water, with mojo rojo or mojo verde. They are the easiest introduction to local cuisine. Gofio, a flour made from roasted grains, appears in various dishes, from accompaniments to desserts. Among the starters, also look out for local goats' cheeses, often served grilled with mojo.

For fish, ask what is available that day and how it is priced, especially when charged by weight. Vieja is a fish typical of the local cuisine. If you prefer meat, conejo en salmorejo is rabbit in an aromatic marinade, not the cold tomato soup the name might bring to mind.

At Christmas, you will find truchas de batata, sweet pastries filled with sweet potato, as well as Spanish turrones. Roscón de Reyes appears as Three Kings' Day approaches. To drink, try wine from the islands, while in Tenerife, a barraquito combines coffee, milk, condensed milk and usually liqueur.

For a simple meal in a modest restaurant, a rough budget is around €18 to €30 per person, depending on what you order and the area. Special festive menus cost more. Book a table for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, checking whether there is a compulsory set menu.

Three-day itinerary

The itinerary below covers three full days in Gran Canaria, based in Las Palmas. It does not include travel time from Greece. This avoids an island transfer that would take up a disproportionate amount of your trip.

Day 1

Spend the morning in Vegueta, stopping at Plaza de Santa Ana and Casa de Colón, if it is open. Continue on foot to Triana for food and shopping. In the afternoon, head to Las Canteras for the sand nativity scene and a walk beside the water. Keep the evening free for dinner, without another lengthy journey. If it is a public holiday, adapt the morning around outdoor walks.

Day 2

Head south to Maspalomas, around 45 to 60 minutes by car from Las Palmas, depending on your starting point and traffic. Walk along the designated routes, see the lighthouse and have lunch nearby. If the weather is favourable, leave time for the beach, even if you do not swim. Return at a leisurely pace. The trip is also possible by bus, but allow longer and check the last convenient return service.

Day 3

Devote the day to the interior, with Tejeda as your main stop. Set off early, bring a warm layer and avoid adding a long hike without preparation. If rain or low cloud is forecast, stay in Las Palmas: spend more time at Las Canteras and, if it is running during your visit, explore the San Telmo craft fair. This itinerary works best when you follow the weather rather than ignore it.

Where to stay

In Tenerife, Costa Adeje suits those looking for hotel facilities and relaxation. Los Cristianos is convenient for everyday outings and apartment stays, while Playa de las Américas has livelier nightlife. Before booking, consult the guide to where to stay in Tenerife and check the actual distance from your accommodation to the beach and bus stops.

In Gran Canaria, Las Canteras offers the best combination of city life, food and seafront walks. Playa del Inglés is more suited to resort holidays and nights out. The guide to where to stay in Gran Canaria helps you choose between the urban north and the resort-focused south.

Weather in December

In coastal areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, daytime highs are often around 20 to 24°C, with nights around 15 to 18°C. These are indicative climate ranges, not a forecast. The south is generally drier and sunnier, while the north may have more cloud and rain.

The sea is usually around 19 to 21°C. Some people enjoy swimming, while others find it cold. If the pool is a key reason for booking, ask for written confirmation that it is heated in December and which pool this applies to. See also what to look out for at hotels with heated pools at Christmas.

Pack T-shirts, long trousers, a cardigan, a windproof jacket and closed-toe shoes. For Teide or the mountainous interior, you will need considerably warmer clothing. Sunscreen and sunglasses remain essential, and beach warning flags take precedence over any desire to swim.

Practical tips

  • Bookings: Christmas and New Year are popular periods, not the winter low season for seaside resorts.
  • Documents: Greek citizens can travel with a valid passport or an identity card accepted for international travel, in line with current requirements.
  • Time and currency: The Canaries are two hours behind Greece in December and use the euro.
  • Buses: TITSA operates in Tenerife, Global runs intercity services in Gran Canaria, and Guaguas Municipales serves Las Palmas.
  • Car hire: Worth considering for inland trips and flexible excursions, but not necessarily for an entire stay in Las Palmas.
  • Public holidays: Check opening hours separately for 25 December, 1 January and 6 January, as well as reduced transport services.

For flights booked on separate tickets, leave a generous connection time and allow for collecting luggage. For every seasonal event, consult announcements from the local council or organiser: last year's poster does not confirm this year's programme. For alternatives with a stronger focus on markets, also compare Christmas in Strasbourg and Colmar.

Frequently asked questions

Which island is best for a first visit?

Tenerife is a good fit if Teide and large resorts are your priorities. Gran Canaria is particularly convenient for combining city and beach, with Las Palmas as your base.

Can we swim at Christmas?

Yes, provided you are comfortable with the water temperature and conditions allow it. A summer-like experience is not guaranteed, and waves and currents require care even in sunshine.

Are three days enough?

Three full days are enough for an introduction to one island. With connecting flights from Greece, four to five nights make the trip noticeably more relaxed.

Is it a suitable destination for children?

Yes, thanks to the seafront walks, nativity scenes and wide choice of accommodation. Keep journeys short and check child policies, pool heating and the festive programme before booking.

Do we need to hire a car?

Not for a holiday spent mainly in Las Palmas or a well-equipped resort. For mountain routes and multiple stops in one day, a car or an organised excursion makes things much easier.

When does it feel most Christmassy?

The lights and many events begin during December, but early January is particularly appealing thanks to the craft markets and Three Kings parades on 5 January.
