Another popular option is Vienna (VIE) airport, which is about a 3.5-hour drive (around 300 km) and offers more international flights. The train journey itself is an experience, as Hallstatt train station is located on the opposite side of the lake. From there, you take the picturesque ferry 'Stefanie' to cross over, a ten-minute ride that offers your first impressive view of the village.

Within Hallstatt, transportation is exclusively on foot. The historic centre is a car-free zone from May to October, and access is only permitted for a short time for permanent residents and for loading/unloading luggage at specific hotels. If you arrive by car, you will need to leave it in the public car parks in the Lahn area, at the southern end of the village.
