Thassos is an island you can drive around in an hour and a half, yet the decision of where to stay in Thassos radically changes your holiday. The 100-kilometre ring road connects six completely different worlds: the port with its ancient city, the beaches with their white marble dust, the mountain villages with their plane trees, and the family resorts of the south.

Thassos at a glance: what you need to know before booking

Thassos is the northernmost island of the Aegean, with an area of 380 square kilometres and a permanent population of around 13,000 residents. Administratively, it belongs to the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and is just 7 nautical miles from the coast of Kavala — a distance that translates to a 40-minute ferry ride from Keramoti to Limenas. This proximity is its great advantage: you don't need a plane ticket or an overnight ferry; you arrive with your car and have it with you for your entire stay.

The island is lush. Pine forests and olive groves literally extend down to the coast, and on many beaches — Paradise, Psili Ammos, Aliki — the green meets the turquoise without interruption. The mountain range of Ipsario reaches 1,204 metres and creates a second, entirely different island inland: Panagia, Potamia, Theologos, Kazaviti and Maries are villages with stone houses, slate roofs, plane trees and running waters, where the temperature drops significantly in August.

Its history began in the 7th century BC, when colonists from Paros settled here, pursuing gold and marble. Thassos marble, dazzlingly white and translucent, is still exported today and is why many beaches have that incredible blue hue: the seabed is covered with marble dust. In Limenas, the ancient Agora, the theatre on the hillside, and the acropolis walls are open to visitors, while the Archaeological Museum houses the colossal Kouros from the 6th century BC.

Gastronomically, Thassos has two trademarks: its honey, from pine and thyme, and Thassian olive oil from the Throumbolia variety. You'll also find fresh fish in Skala Marion and Aliki, walnut pie in every village, and tsipouro served with mezedes, just like on the opposite mainland coast. Restaurant prices remain among the most reasonable of the Greek islands: a meal for two with fish rarely exceeds 45-55 euros.

The season effectively opens in mid-May and closes in mid-October. July and August are intensely busy, with a strong presence of visitors from Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia, so prices increase by 40-60% compared to June. September is undoubtedly the best month: sea temperatures at 25 degrees, half-empty beaches, and accommodation at June prices.

Practically, having a car makes a huge difference. There's a local KTEL (bus service) that circles the island and serves the larger settlements well, but services become less frequent in the afternoon, and smaller beaches remain inaccessible. If you come without a vehicle, choose a base with amenities and services around you: Limenas, Limenaria, Potos or Golden Beach. Fuel and ATMs are available in the larger settlements, but not in the mountain villages.

Which area of Thassos suits you

Limenas (Thassos Town): the port with the ancient city

The island's capital is the most convenient base if you arrive by ferry from Keramoti, if you're interested in archaeology, and if you want restaurants, bars, pharmacies and shops within walking distance. The old harbour with its fishing boats, the ancient Agora and the tavernas give it a town-like character. The disadvantage is that the best beaches are 10 to 30 km away.

Golden Beach and Skala Potamias: for family holidays

On the north-eastern side, 10 km from Limenas, these two settlements share a huge bay with shallow, calm waters and fine sand. It's the most popular choice for families, with many beachfront accommodations, mini markets and playgrounds. Above them, the villages of Panagia and Potamia offer food and coolness just a ten-minute uphill drive away.

Limenaria: the second town with year-round life

On the south-western side, 45 km from Limenas, Limenaria is the second-largest settlement. It boasts a long sandy beach, a seaside promenade, nightlife, supermarkets and the impressive Palataki, the building of the German mining company Speidel at the edge of the bay. Ideal if you want everything within walking distance in a more island-like tone.

Potos and Pefkari: the classic southern resort

Five kilometres south of Limenaria, Potos has the highest concentration of hotels on the island, with a pine-fringed beach, sunbeds, water sports and restaurants offering international menus. Neighbouring Pefkari is smaller and quieter. It's the safe choice if you want services and zero organisational effort.

Prinos and Kazaviti: quiet, with greenery and views

On the west coast, Prinos has the island's second port (ferry from Kavala), and above it are Megalo and Mikro Kazaviti, two stone-built villages nestled among plane trees. This area is for those who seek peace, an authentic village experience and relatively low prices, with the sea just a five-minute downhill drive away.

Practical tips for your stay in Thassos

• Ferry: from Keramoti to Limenas, services are frequent in summer and the journey takes 40 minutes. From Kavala to Prinos, it takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fewer services.
• Car: book a rental in advance for August. The ring road is good, but the turn-offs to beaches like Paradise are narrow and unlit.
• Beachfront properties: if you're booking an accommodation “on the beach”, ask for confirmation if there's a road in between. This is common in Potos and Golden Beach.
• With children: Golden Beach and Skala Potamias have the shallowest waters. Avoid accommodations on a hillside without a lift.
• Off-season: in May and October, several hotels in Potos are closed. Limenas and Limenaria operate all year round.
