Chora, or Mykonos Town, is one of the most beautiful Cycladic settlements: white cubic houses, marble alleyways, Little Venice, the windmills, and Panagia Paraportiani. It's a pedestrianised area, meaning cars must be left in parking lots on the outskirts, and luggage is carried on foot or by small hotel vehicles.

The southern beaches attract the most demand because they are sheltered from the strong Meltemi winds that blow intensely in July and August. Ornos, Psarou, Platis Gialos, Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Elia, and Kalo Livadi are all on the south side. The northern beaches, Ftelia, Agios Sostis, Panormos, are wilder and often windy.

The airport is just 4 km from Chora and receives flights from all over Europe from April to October, while the New Port in Tourlos serves ferries from Rafina and Piraeus, with high-speed boats taking two and a half to five hours. From Mykonos, there are daily boats to Delos, a visit well worth at least half a day.

Which area to stay in

Chora: for anyone who wants everything on foot

Staying in Chora means you won't need transport for dining, shopping, and nightlife, and you'll experience the best sunsets in Little Venice. The trade-off is the noise, the stairs, and the parking. Ask for a room on a quiet alleyway or on the side of the School of Fine Arts if you're a light sleeper.

Ornos: the most balanced choice

Ornos is why many return to Mykonos. It offers an organised sandy beach with shallow waters, tavernas, a supermarket, and public transport, while Chora is just a five-minute drive away. It's the best solution for families and couples who want the sea without feeling isolated.

Psarou and Platis Gialos: luxury and services

Psarou is the island's most expensive beach, with beach clubs and yachts anchored offshore. Platis Gialos, nearby, is more accessible and serves as a hub for boats to Paradise and Elia. Both have excellent hotels, but peace and quiet are not guaranteed.

Agios Ioannis and Kalafatis: quiet with a view

How to get there and how to get around

Mykonos airport is 4 km from Chora and serves daily flights from Athens, lasting forty minutes, as well as numerous direct flights from Europe in the summer. Since taxis on the island are very few, make sure you have arranged transport through your accommodation.

By ferry, high-speed boats from Rafina take two and a half to three hours, and from Piraeus, three to five hours. Ferries dock at the New Port in Tourlos, two kilometres from Chora. Mykonos is connected daily to Paros, Naxos, Tinos, Andros, Ios, and Santorini, so it works well as a stop on an island-hopping trip.

What to do besides the beach

Delos is the most important reason to leave the beach for a while. The sacred island of Apollo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is thirty minutes by boat from the old port, and a visit takes about three hours, with a guide if possible.

In Chora, the Folklore Museum, the Archaeological Museum, and Little Venice fill an afternoon, while Ano Mera, with the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, offers a glimpse of old Mykonos. The cluster of windmills at Kato Myli is the classic spot for sunset.

If you prefer action, Mykonos has some of the best-organised beach clubs in the Mediterranean in Paradise, Super Paradise, Paraga, and Psarou. If you prefer peace and quiet, try Foko, Agios Sostis, and Kalafatis, where there are no sunbeds or music.

May, June, and September are the best months. The weather is warm, the Meltemi winds are milder than in August, and prices are significantly lower, with many hotels offering 30 to 50 percent off compared to peak season.

July and August are the most expensive and busiest period. Good accommodations are booked up by January, and minimum stays often reach three or four nights. If you must travel then, book early and factor in extra costs for transfers.

In October, the island gradually empties, and a large proportion of restaurants remain open until mid-month. It's the ideal period for couples who want Mykonos without the crowds, with prices that feel like a different island.
