Choosing a village isn't restrictive, as the train connects all five in just a few minutes, making exploration very easy. However, your base will determine the atmosphere you experience in the mornings and evenings, once the hordes of day-trippers have left. Each village has its own character, from the more cosmopolitan Monterosso to the tranquil Corniglia. Staying here is an experience in itself, with most accommodations being small, family-run hotels and rooms built into the rock, often with many steps and limited car access.

Practical information for Cinque Terre

To reach Cinque Terre, the closest airports are Pisa (PSA) and Genoa (GOA). Pisa airport is about 100 km away and is directly connected by train (PisaMover) to Pisa Centrale station, from where you take a train to La Spezia. From Genoa, which is about 110 km away, you'll need to take a bus to Genova Piazza Principe station and then a train. From both directions, the main hub is La Spezia Centrale station, from which the local Cinque Terre Express train departs, stopping at all villages. The journey from La Spezia to the first village, Riomaggiore, takes less than 10 minutes. If you've found cheap flights to Milan, you can also come from there by train, but the journey takes about 3 hours.

Travel within Cinque Terre is almost exclusively by train. Cars are forbidden in most villages and the roads are narrow and difficult, while parking is almost impossible and extremely expensive. The best time to visit Cinque Terre is spring (April to early June) and autumn (September and October), when the weather is pleasant for hiking and the crowds are smaller. In summer, especially July and August, the area is flooded with tourists, prices skyrocket, and the heat makes walking the trails difficult. Winter is very quiet, but many restaurants and shops are closed, and there's a risk of trails being closed due to bad weather. Accommodation prices are generally high. Riomaggiore: For vibrancy and a youthful atmosphere

Riomaggiore is the first of the five villages you encounter coming from La Spezia and perhaps the liveliest.
