With security measures becoming increasingly strict (Schengen border controls were reinstated in April 2017), you need to know what you can and cannot have with you in your carry-on luggage as well as in your checked-in suitcase.

What is allowed on the plane

• What about liquids on the plane, in checked luggage and carry-on?

In your carry-on luggage, you can have liquids up to 100ml in individual containers, and not exceeding 1000ml in total. They must be in specific containers that state the ml (of the container). If you have a cologne whose container is 150ml but the content is half as it was already open, you still cannot take it with you in your carry-on. Finally, all liquid bottles must be sealed in a transparent, re-sealable bag.

Conversely, in your checked luggage, there are no restrictions on the liquids you can carry.

• Which cosmetics can I take on the plane?

The rules for all items also apply to cosmetics. If you want to carry cosmetics in your hand luggage, then liquid cosmetics such as liquid mascara, gels, creams, etc. must follow the rule described in point 1 – meaning up to 100ml per bottle and a total of 1000ml for all liquids. If you want to take cosmetics in the suitcase you check-in, then there is no restriction on the quantity.

• Can I take baby food on the plane?

You can normally carry baby food with you, and specifically for baby milk on the plane, you can have a quantity greater than 100ml, provided you declare it at check-in and security control.

• Can I take scissors on the plane?

If your scissors (their blade) do not exceed 6 centimetres, then you can take them with you on the plane. You can also carry a razor and nail clippers.

• According to the liquid regulations, I cannot buy cologne or any drink from duty-free larger than 100ml. Is that right?

Wrong! Anything you buy from duty-free, even a one-litre drink, you can normally take with you as long as it is in its special sealed packaging. All purchases from duty-free shops do not fall under the liquid security rule.

• Can I carry a laptop, mobile phone, or iPad?

Of course. You can have all your electronic devices with you, either in your carry-on or in your checked luggage. During the check-in security screening, you will need to open your laptop (the keyboard) as well as your iPad case.

Attention: If you own a Samsung Galaxy Note 7, it is strictly prohibited to take it with you on the plane! Ask and inform your airline before the flight!

• Can I take food on the plane?

You can take any solid food you wish with you. If you have liquids that were not bought after the security check, then they fall under the liquid rules.

• What about medicines on the plane

Medicines should ideally be in their original packaging with the appropriate labelling. It's not mandatory, but it might save you from extra checks. You can carry all the desired quantity of pills and/or vitamins.

• I have a cologne whose container is 150ml but there's very little inside – less than 50ml. Can I take it on the plane even if it's not 100ml?

No! You cannot take it with you on the plane or in your hand luggage; only in the checked luggage you hand over at the check-in counter. It doesn't matter how much liquid is inside, but the stated capacity of the packaging. If you wish, you can transfer it to a new container with a capacity of less than 100ml!

Everything written above applies to Ryanair as well as all European airlines. For both Aegean and Ryanair carry-on luggage, the exact same security rules apply to liquids, cosmetics, etc. The only difference is the dimensions allowed for each carry-on bag, depending on the airline.

What is allowed with Ryanair

The basic fare includes only one small bag up to 40 by 20 by 25 centimetres, which must fit under the seat. A standard carry-on bag of 55 by 40 by 20 centimetres and 10 kg is charged separately, along with priority boarding. The rules for liquids and prohibited items are the same across all airlines, as they are set by airport security, not the airline. The only difference is what fits and what incurs an extra charge.

What is allowed with Sky Express

Sky Express allows an 8 kg carry-on bag with dimensions up to 55 by 40 by 20 centimetres, plus a small personal bag, while checked luggage depends on the ticket class. On smaller aircraft flying to islands, carry-on bags are often checked at the gate due to space limitations, so keep medicines, documents, and electronics in a small bag with you.

Liquids: how many ml are allowed

In the cabin, each container can hold up to 100 ml, and all together they must fit into a single transparent, resealable bag of one-litre capacity, one bag per passenger. Liquids also include gels, creams, toothpastes, sprays, perfumes, and honey. The 100 ml limit does not apply to checked luggage. At some airports with new screening equipment, the limit has been relaxed, but this rule is not applied everywhere, so prepare your bag as if it still applies.

Medicines, baby food and medical devices

Medicines are allowed in the cabin in quantities sufficient for the trip, even in liquid form exceeding 100 ml, provided they are accompanied by a medical prescription or certificate in English. Injectables and syringes are permitted with the same documentation. Milk, water, and baby food are allowed in the quantity needed by the child during the journey. Devices such as respirators or insulin pumps must be declared to the airline before the flight and do not count towards carry-on luggage limits.

What is always prohibited

Knives, scissors with blades longer than 6 centimetres, tools, bats, and any sharp objects are not allowed in the cabin. Explosives, gas canisters, flammable liquids, and fireworks are prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage. Spare lithium batteries, power banks, and e-cigarettes are prohibited in checked luggage and may only be carried with you in the cabin.
