Portaria: the most convenient base

If it's your first time, Portaria is the safe choice. It's located 13 km above Volos, has a square with plane trees and fountains, most of the mountain's hotels with spas, and easy access in all directions: 4 km from Makrinitsa, 10 minutes from the ski centre, 40 minutes from the Aegean beaches. It's also the only area where you'll easily find parking next to your accommodation.

Makrinitsa: the postcard perfect village

The 'balcony of Pelion' offers the most spectacular views of the Pagasetic Gulf and the most beautiful mansions. The settlement is pedestrianised: you leave your car in the car park at the entrance and continue on foot, often uphill and with steps. Wonderful for a romantic weekend, less practical if you're travelling with large suitcases or small children.

Vizitsa and Pinakates: quiet southern Pelion

On the Pagasetic Gulf side, 30 km from Volos, these two villages offer the same architecture as Makrinitsa but with far fewer crowds. They make the best base for the southern beaches (Afissos, Kala Nera, Milina) and for the little train from Milies, which is 3 km away.

Eastern Pelion: for seaside holidays

Mouresi, Tsagarada, Agios Ioannis, and Damouchari are the choice if you want to swim every day. The beaches here – Papa Nero, Fakistra, Mylopotamos – are among the most beautiful in mainland Greece. The downside is that you're about an hour from Volos, and the mountain here empties out in winter.
