For a first visit to Gdańsk, stay in Główne Miasto or on Wyspa Spichrzów: the main sights, River Motława and plenty of restaurants will be nearby. If train excursions take priority, Stare Miasto towards the main station and Wrzeszcz are more convenient. For summer days by the sea, consider Brzeźno or Jelitkowo, allowing for journeys into the historic centre.

The choice is not simply between the centre and the suburbs. It is about whether you want to walk back after dinner, catch trains daily or prioritise the beach.

Gdańsk: what to know before choosing accommodation

Gdańsk lies in northern Poland, on the Gulf of Gdańsk. Together with Sopot and Gdynia, it forms the Tri-City, known as Trójmiasto. This historic Baltic port's trading past is reflected in its tall façades, former warehouses and waterfront buildings. However, the tourist centre sits on the Motława, not beside a beach.

One useful geographical distinction: what most visitors and many booking platforms call the 'Old Town' mainly covers Główne Miasto. This is where you will find Długa, Długi Targ, Neptune's Fountain and St Mary's Basilica. Stare Miasto is a separate historic district further north. When booking, the address matters more than the area's marketing description.

The centre's appearance owes much to extensive post-war reconstruction. Gdańsk suffered enormous destruction during the Second World War, but many distinctive façades and historic streets were restored. Mariacka, with its amber shops and raised entrances, rewards a leisurely stroll. On the waterfront, the historic Żuraw crane recalls the port's former trading role.

Modern history is equally important. Allow substantial time for the Museum of the Second World War, while the European Solidarity Centre connects the shipyards with the Solidarność movement. Do not squeeze both between photo stops. If they are central to your trip, the northern part of the centre makes a practical base, reducing repeated journeys.

Three nights is a comfortable starting point for the historic centre and one major museum. With four or five, you can add Sopot, Gdynia or an excursion to Malbork Castle. Gdańsk's beaches also suit walks outside summer, but swimming depends on the weather and Baltic conditions. Warmth is not guaranteed, even in midsummer.

Food ranges from Polish specialities, including pierogi and soups, to contemporary restaurants and cafés. The most tourist-focused venues cluster around Długi Targ and the waterfront. Try side streets for a wider range of prices. The currency is the Polish złoty, PLN, and cards are widely accepted. If a payment terminal offers conversion into euros, choosing payment in PLN is usually better value.

For a longer Polish itinerary, consult our guides to where to stay in Warsaw by area and the best areas to stay in Kraków. For a mountain leg, see where to stay in Zakopane. However, Zakopane is in southern Poland, not a nearby excursion from Gdańsk. Allow separate days and travel time.

The best areas to stay

Główne Miasto: for sightseeing and first visits

This is the easiest choice for a short break. Step outside your hotel into historic streets, museums and restaurants. The area around Długa, Piwna and Mariacka particularly suits visitors who want to explore mostly on foot.

The trade-offs are busier streets, possible evening noise and restricted vehicle access. Light sleepers should request a room away from busy streets. In historic buildings, confirm that there is a lift and step-free access if you need them.

Wyspa Spichrzów and Szafarnia: stays near the water

Wyspa Spichrzów, or Granary Island, combines historic remnants with modern buildings, hotels and restaurants. Bridges connect it to the historic centre. It suits couples seeking attractive evening walks without straying far from the sights.

Szafarnia lies further east, beside the marina, and is not the same location. In either area, proximity to the water does not guarantee a view from every room. Check the room category, outlook and any nearby building work, particularly around newer developments.

Stare Miasto and Gdańsk Główny: for trains and museums

The northern side of the centre balances sightseeing with transport convenience. It is handy for the European Solidarity Centre, while access to the main railway station helps travellers continuing to other cities.

Not every street has Mariacka's atmosphere. Check whether your room faces a main road and assess the route with luggage, rather than just the map distance.

Wrzeszcz and Oliwa: for longer stays

Wrzeszcz offers everyday local life, shops, restaurants and a major railway hub. It suits trips combining work, excursions and visits across the Tri-City. Prices are not necessarily lower, but it broadens your search beyond the tourist centre.

Oliwa offers a different pace, with its park, cathedral and access to green walking routes. For a few days focused entirely on central attractions, daily journeys may outweigh any savings.

Brzeźno and Jelitkowo: for the beach

Choose these coastal areas when the sea, walking and cycling are central to your plans. They are sensible bases for a summer family stay, but less practical for two days of museums. Check tram or bus access, and do not assume low prices in peak season.

Which area suits your trip?

  • First visit without a car: Główne Miasto, so you can explore the main sights on foot.
  • Couples: Wyspa Spichrzów or the Motława waterfront, choosing your room carefully for views and quiet.
  • Families: a quiet central street for sightseeing, or Jelitkowo for more beach time. Check actual room dimensions and bed arrangements.
  • Frequent excursions: Stare Miasto towards the station, or Wrzeszcz near a railway connection.
  • Tight budgets: compare streets around the centre's edges with Wrzeszcz, adding transport costs.
  • Nightlife: a central base for an easy return, but not necessarily a room directly above a bar.

10 hotels in Gdańsk

Gdańsk has a large accommodation market. This shortlist of ten hotels focuses on the centre and does not represent every district. We have not included hotels in other cities to fill geographical gaps. All figures are indicative nightly budgets for a double room in euros, not current offers.

1. PURO Gdańsk Stare Miasto
On Wyspa Spichrzów, despite the broader Old Town reference in its name. Its contemporary design suits travellers who prefer modern surroundings and easy access to riverside walks. A good base for dining and evenings out in the centre.

  • Average cost: €90 to €180, an indicative range for modern central hotels of this type, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

2. Radisson Blu Hotel Gdańsk
On Długi Targ, right along the city's main historic thoroughfare. It mainly appeals to guests prioritising a central location and a more traditional hotel style. Convenient for a short visit, although arrivals by car require clarification of the drop-off point.

  • Average cost: €100 to €200, an indicative range for upmarket hotels in the historic centre, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

3. Hotel Gdańsk Boutique
In Szafarnia, beside the marina and east of Wyspa Spichrzów, not on the island itself. Its architecture connects it with the history of the old granaries. It suits travellers seeking distinctive buildings and waterside accommodation, with access to the centre via bridges.

  • Average cost: €100 to €200, an indicative range for central boutique hotels near the water, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

4. GRANO HOTEL Gdańsk Old Town
On Wyspa Spichrzów, this is a modern option near the historic centre for visitors who prefer not to stay in an old townhouse. The location is convenient for walks towards Długi Targ and the river. For family bookings, compare specific room types, not just the starting price.

  • Average cost: €90 to €180, an indicative range for modern upmarket hotels in this area, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

5. Hotel Admirał
On Tobiasza, on the northern side of the tourist centre, this suits guests wanting access to the Motława without staying along Długi Targ. Its location also helps with visits to the Museum of the Second World War. Worth comparing for a sightseeing-focused trip.

  • Average cost: €70 to €140, an indicative range for mid-range central hotels, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

6. Hotel Hanza
On the Motława waterfront near the historic crane, its chief advantage is its position along the riverside promenade. It suits couples and visitors seeking the old harbour's atmosphere. If a river view matters, choose a room category that explicitly includes one.

  • Average cost: €95 to €190, an indicative range for hotels on the central waterfront, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

7. Hotel Artus Old Town
On Piwna, near St Mary's Basilica, this places you among the closely packed historic streets. It is convenient for days centred on attractions, cafés and walking. The very central location makes it worth checking your room's outlook if peace and quiet are priorities.

  • Average cost: €60 to €120, an indicative range for simpler hotels in the historic centre, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

8. Mercure Gdańsk Stare Miasto
On Jana Heweliusza, on the northern side of the centre, this is a practical base for combining sightseeing with train journeys. Its tall building stands out against the lower historic façades. The location suits itineraries involving the station and European Solidarity Centre.

  • Average cost: €70 to €145, an indicative range for large central chain hotels, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

9. Hampton By Hilton Gdansk Old Town
On Piwna, offering a central base for guests who prefer a modern chain hotel within the historic district. It suits short stays without a car and returning to your room between outings. Before comparing offers, check each package's inclusions and cancellation terms.

  • Average cost: €80 to €160, an indicative range for modern chain hotels in the centre, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

10. The Cloud One Gdansk
On Stągiewna, on Wyspa Spichrzów, this suits visitors seeking contemporary design and easy access to central walking routes. The area has a busy restaurant scene and a straightforward route towards the Green Gate. For longer stays, check your chosen room's size carefully.

  • Average cost: €80 to €160, an indicative range for central hotels with contemporary design, not a verified live rate for this hotel.

Getting around: airport, trains and cars

Lech Wałęsa Airport is served by trains, buses and taxis. If taking the train towards the historic centre, check whether your connection requires a change, often at Wrzeszcz. For late arrivals, check that day's available services and the final route to your hotel's entrance.

The historic centre is best explored on foot. Trams and buses serve more distant districts, while SKM trains are useful for Sopot and Gdynia. Do not assume every urban transport ticket automatically covers all trains and operators. Check validity and activation requirements before boarding.

For a city break, a car usually adds parking costs and access difficulties. If you need one for excursions beyond the rail network, request written confirmation of a parking space and its charge. Our ten checks before hiring a car are useful preparation, particularly regarding insurance and deposits.

When to visit and how much to budget

May, June and September often suit walking with fewer crowds than midsummer, although good weather is not guaranteed. July and August bring higher demand, especially during St Dominic's Fair. Its dates vary, so check whether it overlaps with your trip.

Winter brings shorter daylight hours, cold and often damp or windy conditions. Accommodation may be cheaper, but holidays and the Christmas market are exceptions. Pack waterproofs and layers even in milder seasons.

For planning purposes, a basic double room might cost around €55 to €95, a comfortable central hotel €80 to €150, and a pricier option €130 to €220 or more. These are general ranges, not offers. Even simpler accommodation can exceed them at peak times.

For two people, allow roughly another €45 to €80 daily for fairly modest meals, coffee and local transport, excluding museums, taxis and expensive evenings out. Compare total costs, including breakfast, cancellation terms and extra charges. A cheaper room outside the centre is not always cheaper overall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area for a first visit?

Główne Miasto is the most straightforward sightseeing base in terms of convenience. Wyspa Spichrzów is equally useful if you prefer modern hotels near the water.

Are the Old Town and Stare Miasto the same?

Not quite in tourist descriptions. 'Old Town' is often used more broadly, including Główne Miasto. Always check the address, not just the hotel's name.

Do I need a car in Gdańsk?

Not for the centre or the main journeys around the Tri-City. Walking, public transport and trains cover many itineraries. A car makes more sense for specific routes in the wider region.

How many nights should I stay?

Three nights allows a good introduction without excessive rushing. Add one or two for more museums, beaches, Sopot or Malbork, rather than squeezing everything into two days.

Can I stay in the centre and go swimming?

Yes, but the beaches are not beside the historic waterfront. You will need a separate journey. For daily swimming, consider Brzeźno or Jelitkowo and set aside particular days for the centre.

When should I book a hotel?

Book earlier for summer, major events and holiday weekends. For family rooms or particular views, early booking with flexible cancellation gives more choice, without guaranteeing the lowest price.

If you are comparing Baltic destinations

For another trip combining a historic centre with Baltic atmosphere, explore the best areas to stay in Riga and our Tallinn accommodation guide. These are alternative destinations requiring separate planning, not nearby day trips. In Gdańsk, a central base remains the simplest choice if you want to get to know the city without spending a large part of each day travelling around.
