You are ready for your trip, you have your airline tickets in hand, you have arrived at the airport, and just before boarding, it is announced that your trip is cancelled!

One of the main reasons flights are cancelled is weather conditions.

Compensation for flight delay

If your flight has been delayed for reasons for which the airline is responsible (no aircraft available, technical problem, etc.), then you are entitled to compensation, depending on the distance of the journey.

The further you fly, the greater the compensation you can claim from the airline.

More specifically, the compensation you are entitled to is:

For delays over 3 hours and a journey up to 1500 km, the compensation is €250.

From 1500 to 3500 km, the compensation is €400, while for a journey over 3500 km, the compensation is €600.

These apply in cases where the flight was postponed or delayed by more than 3 hours, or you were denied boarding against your will, even though you had valid tickets and a boarding pass.

Compensation is per ticket and does not differentiate between economy class and business class.

Also, it doesn't matter if you are flying with a charter flight, a low-cost carrier (such as, for example, if you have booked airline tickets with Ryanair) or with a conventional airline like Aegean, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, etc. The laws apply to all airlines.

 

Ryanair flight delay compensation

Ryanair quite often has delays in its flights or even cancellations.

However, you can claim your compensation completely free of charge and without expense if you had a delay of more than 3 hours in the last 3 years.

Aegean flight delay compensation

Aegean, although a very punctual airline, can rarely experience delays or cancellations on its flights. For this reason, you can claim compensation of up to €600 if you are flying to an international destination and had a delay of more than 3 hours.

Compensation in case of extreme weather conditions

As mentioned above, in case of extreme weather conditions, the flight may be cancelled for passenger safety.

In this case, the airline tickets you have booked are either cancelled or transferred to another flight, depending on the options the airline provides you.

Usually, if the distance is relatively short (e.g. Athens – Thessaloniki), you will be offered transport by bus or another flight the next day.

In this case, you are not entitled to compensation, but the airline must arrange for your meals and accommodation, as well as transport from the hotel to the airport.

Always keep in mind when booking airline tickets that the flight may be cancelled for safety reasons or other unforeseen circumstances.
