Athens–Santorini flights: indicative fares, flight times, airlines, baggage and airport transfers. Find out when to book for better value.
Από Travelo Team

Athens–Santorini flights typically cost around €40–180 one way and €80–350 return in economy, not necessarily including checked baggage. Fares may be higher during periods of strong demand. Direct flights usually take 45–60 minutes, with AEGEAN/Olympic Air and SKY express the main options. Lower fares are more common from November to March, outside holiday periods, and on less popular dates in spring and autumn.
The figures in this guide are indicative ranges for budgeting, not live offers or guaranteed price limits. The final price depends on availability, fare type, baggage and your travel dates. For a fair comparison, calculate the total cost of your outbound and return journeys, rather than just the lowest price shown on the first screen.

Which airlines fly from Athens to Santorini?
AEGEAN/Olympic Air and SKY express are the main options for direct Athens–Santorini flights. Frequency varies by season, with more departures usually available during the busiest tourist months. Flight times matter: an early arrival gives you more time on the island, but may mean leaving home very early.
When booking within the AEGEAN/Olympic Air network, check which airline is listed as the operating carrier. Not all domestic flights are operated exclusively by Olympic Air, and the same aircraft type is not necessarily used for every departure.
For low-cost airlines such as Volotea or Ryanair, seasonal routes change, so you need to check the current schedule. An airline's presence at Santorini Airport does not mean it also serves the route from Athens. Do not rely on old route listings.
Connecting flights usually offer no practical advantage when travelling from Athens. If one appears in your search results, check the total journey time and final price. With separate tickets, a delay to your first flight could leave you without protection for your onward journey.
How much do flights cost by season?
For an initial budget, use the following indicative ranges per adult in economy, including taxes and mandatory charges but excluding optional extras. These are not fixed fares and are not based on a live search.
- November–March, outside holiday periods: around €40–90 one way and €80–170 return.
- April–May and October, outside public holidays: around €50–130 one way and €100–240 return.
- June and September: around €60–160 one way and €120–300 return.
- July–August: around €80–220 one way and €160–420 return, though prices can exceed these upper figures.
Easter, long weekends and popular Friday and Sunday departures can be more expensive than the general seasonal pattern suggests. Equally, a limited-time offer may bring fares below these ranges. Your return flight will not necessarily cost the same as your outbound flight, so check each leg separately.
A cheap flight does not guarantee a cheap trip, either. Accommodation in Santorini has a significant impact on your overall budget. Before buying a non-refundable fare, check that you can find somewhere to stay in your preferred area and price range.
When to book for a cheaper fare
There is no particular day to buy that guarantees the lowest fare. As a practical starting point, begin comparing prices around 1–3 months ahead for off-peak travel, and earlier, around 3–6 months ahead, for July, August or public holidays. These are useful search windows, not proven ideal booking dates.
- Compare outbound and return dates within a 2–3-day window.
- Check different flight times, but factor in any extra cost for a night-time taxi.
- Consider flying with a different airline on each leg.
- Set up price alerts if your search service offers them.
- Compare the final price with the baggage you actually need.
For a more focused search, see these tips for finding cheap flights. If your dates are fixed, waiting until the last minute is risky: the cheapest fare categories may sell out. When comparing flights, weigh up price, flight times and change conditions together.
How long is the flight, and which airports serve the route?
The scheduled Athens–Santorini flight time is usually 45–60 minutes. Actual time in the air may be shorter, but for planning purposes, use the duration shown on your ticket, which includes taxiing. References to a flight of around half an hour do not always reflect the full scheduled journey time.
Flights depart from Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (ATH) and arrive at Santorini Airport (JTR), on the eastern side of the island. Plan to arrive at Athens Airport around two hours before departure, especially if checking in a suitcase, and follow your airline's deadlines.
For the true door-to-door journey time, add your transfer to ATH, security checks, baggage collection and the journey to your accommodation. On a short break, convenient outbound and return flight times are often worth more than a small difference in fare.
Getting from Santorini Airport to Fira and your hotel
In Santorini, the “centre” usually means Fira, the island's capital and main bus hub. Oia, Kamari and Perissa are in different parts of the island, so you will need your accommodation's address before choosing a transfer.
- Bus to Fira: allow around 15–25 minutes on the road, excluding waiting time, and budget roughly €2–3 per person. Check the current fare and seasonal KTEL bus timetable.
- Taxi to Fira: around 10–20 minutes, depending on traffic. Budget approximately €20–35 per vehicle and confirm the fare before setting off.
- Pre-booked private transfer to Fira: roughly €25–50 per vehicle, depending on the service, time of day and number of passengers.
- Hire car: useful if you plan to get out and about every day. Compare insurance, deposit requirements, fuel policies and parking availability at your accommodation.
For Oia or Perissa, travelling by bus usually involves changing in Fira. The taxi and transfer prices above apply to Fira, not the whole island. If arriving in the evening, check the last bus time in advance. If you are staying on the caldera, also ask for directions from the drop-off point: many properties are reached on foot and involve steps.
Santorini: what to see and when to go
There is more to Santorini than a photo stop in Oia. The caldera, its clifftop villages, archaeological sites and vineyards offer plenty to fill a 3–5-day trip. The most useful approach is to group your sightseeing by area, so you do not spend the day on the road. For an overview, read what Santorini is famous for, from its history to its sights.
The caldera, Fira and Oia
Start in Fira and walk towards Firostefani and Imerovigli. This route offers caldera views throughout without requiring a full-day hike. The complete Fira–Oia walking route is around 10 kilometres and usually takes 3–5 hours, depending on your pace and stops. There are exposed stretches, uphill sections and limited shade, so bring water, wear suitable shoes and avoid the midday heat.
It is worth reaching Oia early in the morning, when its narrow lanes are easier to explore. Sunset draws large crowds and need not dictate your entire itinerary. If you head down to Ammoudi, bear in mind the climb back up, especially if travelling with children or anyone who finds steps difficult.
Akrotiri, villages and wine
The prehistoric settlement at Akrotiri is one of the island's most rewarding sights. Its buildings and layout offer an insight into life before the great volcanic eruption of the Bronze Age. If archaeology interests you, combine it with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira. Check opening hours, opening days and any access restrictions separately for each site.
Pyrgos is ideal for wandering uphill lanes and stopping to enjoy the views, while Emporio has a different, more enclosed village layout around its fortified centre, or kasteli. For wine, look for a winery visit introducing Assyrtiko and the traditional basket-shaped vine training known as kouloura. Book ahead where required and arrange transport so you do not have to drive after the tasting.
Beaches and the best time to visit
Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos are practical choices for swimming, with dark volcanic sand and pebbles and beach facilities in many areas. The sand and pebbles get very hot in summer. At beaches beneath steep slopes, such as Red Beach, follow local warnings and any closures due to landslide risk. A popular photograph is not proof of safe access.
For walking and sightseeing, April–May or late September–October are usually good choices, though the weather is never guaranteed. For more time in the sea, June and September often offer a good balance, but they are not necessarily cheap months. Winter brings fewer visitors, but many tourism businesses are closed. For a first trip, I would allow at least three nights, leaving one day lightly planned to accommodate windy weather or simply spend longer somewhere you enjoy.
Where to stay in Santorini
Choosing the right base reduces travel time and helps keep the overall cost under control. Our guide to where to stay in Santorini lets you compare areas with different atmospheres and transport links.
- Fira: particularly convenient without a car, thanks to its main bus station and wide choice of places to eat. Explore areas and accommodation in Fira.
- Oia: a good fit if staying in this particular village and enjoying the views are your priorities, but check steps and access carefully. Compare places to stay in Oia.
- Kamari: a practical base for the beach, restaurants and flatter seaside strolls. See where to stay in Kamari.
If swimming is your main priority, also consider beachfront hotels in Santorini. A caldera view does not mean easy access to a beach. Check the actual location on a map, not just the property's photographs.
Baggage and low-cost airlines
The cheapest fare does not necessarily include everything you need. Distinguish between a small personal item that fits under the seat, cabin baggage and a checked suitcase. Size limits, weight limits and allowances vary by airline and fare category.
Do not assume every ticket includes a cabin suitcase, or that the same baggage policy applies on your return flight with a different airline. Also check seat selection charges, online check-in deadlines and change conditions. Adding baggage in advance often costs less than arranging it at the airport, but confirm this in the current terms.
For a short trip, a small bag may be enough. If you are carrying more equipment, however, compare a more inclusive fare with the basic fare plus extras. The short flight time does not change the baggage rules.
Practical tips before booking
- Check passenger details: the name must match an accepted identification document. For children, confirm the required documents with the airline.
- Coordinate arrival and check-in: ask whether your accommodation can store luggage before your room is ready.
- Allow for delays: avoid tight connections with ferries or activities that cannot be rescheduled.
- Check access and parking: on the caldera, a point that looks close on the map may still be many steps away from your room.
- Read the booking terms: who handles changes, cancellations and refunds, the airline or the intermediary?
The best option is not always the absolute cheapest. Convenient flight times, the right baggage allowance and an easy transfer to your hotel can be worth more than a small saving at the outset.
