Flights to Madrid: Athens Departures and Prices

For flights from Athens to Madrid, a useful economy-class budget is €70–220 one-way and €140–380 return, when lower fares are available. During peak periods, prices may rise to around €220–450 each way or €350–650 return, though these are not upper limits. A direct flight usually takes 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 10 minutes. Aegean and Iberia serve the route; check flight frequencies for your dates. Lower fares are generally easier to find in winter, outside festive periods, and on departures away from public holidays and major events.

The prices below are estimates to help you plan your trip, not live offers. They are for one adult in economy class and do not assume checked baggage is included. The final price depends on availability, fare type, baggage and extras.

Which airlines fly from Athens to Madrid?

Direct flights

Aegean and Iberia are the main options for direct flights from Athens to Madrid. Schedules do not necessarily stay the same throughout the year: departure times and frequencies vary by season. Seasonal routes also change, so confirm the timetable before booking hotels or other arrangements around your flights.

Note the difference between the airline selling the ticket and the one operating the flight. Codeshare flights may list different airline names for the same aircraft. The “operated by” information helps you check the correct baggage rules, check-in arrangements and onboard services.

Connecting flights

Depending on the day, you may find connections with Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich, Air France via Paris, KLM via Amsterdam, ITA Airways via Rome or Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. A connecting flight is not necessarily cheaper than a direct one.

For a short trip, the saving should justify the extra travel time. Choose a single through-ticket if you need a connection. With separate bookings, the second airline is generally not obliged to rebook you free of charge if you miss its flight because the first one was delayed.

How much do flights cost by season?

The season affects prices, but how full flights are and how flexible your dates are matter just as much. As a rough guide for economy class without checked baggage, budget:

  • Winter outside festive periods: around €70–160 one-way and €140–280 return.
  • Spring and autumn outside public holidays: around €90–220 one-way and €180–380 return.
  • Summer: around €120–300 one-way and €240–500 return.
  • Christmas, Easter and high-demand dates: around €220–450 one-way and €350–650 return.

These ranges are not recorded averages or a guarantee that fares will be available. You may find lower offers, but also much more expensive tickets, especially close to departure. Return fares are not necessarily twice the one-way price, either.

Spain’s Holy Week, Semana Santa, does not always coincide with Orthodox Easter. Check both calendars, along with sporting fixtures, concerts and major exhibitions. For a meaningful comparison, use the flight comparison guide to compare fares with the same baggage allowance and similar travel times.

When to book for a cheaper fare

A useful starting point is to begin monitoring prices two to four months ahead. Start earlier for holiday periods or fixed dates. This is not a formula for finding the lowest fare, but it gives you time to compare without last-minute pressure.

Try shifting your departure and return by two or three days. Weekdays are worth checking, but do not assume that Tuesday or Wednesday will be cheaper. There is no particular day to buy that guarantees a lower fare for everyone.

Set a price alert and use the total price, including the baggage you need, as your benchmark. The guide to using Skyscanner can help you search flexible dates, while these 20 tips for cheap flights offer more ways to compare.

Do not put off a reasonably priced booking on the assumption that fares must fall. Last-minute flights make more sense when you can change your dates or destination, not when you have to fly on a particular Friday.

Flight times and airports

A direct Athens–Madrid flight usually has a scheduled duration of 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 10 minutes. Winds, routing and airport traffic affect the actual time. With a connection, a relatively short itinerary may take around 6–9 hours in total, but many options take longer.

You depart from ATH and land at MAD, northeast of Madrid. Barajas has several terminals, with T4 separate from the T1, T2 and T3 complex. Check your terminal on your ticket and again before departure, especially if you have a connection.

All times on tickets are local. The time difference can make the flight to Madrid look shorter without changing the time spent in the air. You will find more examples in the guide Athens to Madrid: how long is the direct flight?

Getting from Madrid Airport to the city centre

The best option depends mainly on your arrival terminal, accommodation address and arrival time. The journey times below exclude baggage collection and waiting time. Costs are approximate and should be confirmed before you travel.

  • Metro: line 8 links the airport with Nuevos Ministerios. You will need to change for many central areas. Allow around 35–60 minutes in total and €5–8 per person, depending on your ticket and whether you need to buy a reloadable travel card. An airport supplement applies where required.
  • Cercanías commuter train: serves T4 and is convenient for connections to major railway stations. Allow around 25–40 minutes to the main city stations and €2–4 one-way, depending on your destination. From another terminal, add time to reach T4.
  • Exprés Aeropuerto bus: runs 24 hours a day, with a different city-centre terminus at night. It connects the airport with stops including Cibeles and, during daytime service, Atocha. Allow around 30–50 minutes, longer in traffic, and budget €5–6 per person.
  • Official taxi: convenient if you have plenty of luggage or are travelling in a small group. For journeys covered by the fixed fare to addresses inside the M-30 ring road, budget around €30–40 per vehicle and allow 25–45 minutes. Confirm the current fare and whether your address is covered.

The metro and commuter trains do not run around the clock. If you arrive late, check the guide to getting from Madrid Airport to the city centre in advance, so that a cheaper flight does not end up requiring a more expensive transfer.

What to see in Madrid and when to visit

For a first visit to Madrid, I would allow three full days, ideally four if you want to explore museums without rushing. The historic centre is enjoyable to explore on foot, but distances add up when you combine sights in the west of the city with Retiro Park and the Salamanca neighbourhood. Plan each day around one area and leave time for breaks rather than constantly crossing the city.

Start at Puerta del Sol and continue to Plaza Mayor, a good place to get your bearings in old Madrid. From there, you can walk to the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral. If you plan to go inside the palace, check opening hours and available entry slots, as official events can affect access. Do not treat it as a quick photo stop.

Set aside dedicated time for the Museo del Prado, especially for works by Velázquez, Goya and El Greco. Choose a few galleries or a themed route in advance, as trying to see everything can be tiring. For 20th-century art, the Reina Sofía is the essential stop, home to Picasso’s Guernica. The Thyssen-Bornemisza rounds things off with a broad sweep of European painting. Visiting two major museums in one day rarely leaves much energy for the rest of the city.

After the Prado, Retiro is ideal for a slower stroll among its lake, tree-lined paths and gardens. Nearby, Barrio de las Letras has streets full of literary references, small shops and plenty of places to eat. For nightlife, Malasaña and Chueca have lively scenes, while La Latina is a good place to combine a walk with small plates at several different bars. El Rastro market takes place on Sundays and public holidays and can get very crowded.

For food, try a bocadillo de calamares near Plaza Mayor, but compare menus rather than automatically choosing the most central terrace. Cocido madrileño is a hearty choice on a cold day, while churros with chocolate make a good morning or afternoon stop. Lunch and dinner are often served later than visitors expect. If you have a particular restaurant in mind for the weekend, booking ahead saves waiting and unnecessary journeys.

For walking, April and May, along with September and October, are usually more comfortable than midsummer. July and August can be intensely hot, so plan outdoor sightseeing early and save museums for the hottest hours. Winter brings cold mornings and evenings, but often allows for a cheaper trip outside festive periods. If you have an extra day, Toledo or Segovia make sensible excursions, but not at the expense of an already packed two-day visit. For help planning your route, consult the Madrid travel guide.

Where to stay

For a first visit, Sol, Gran Vía and Barrio de las Letras make it easy to get around on foot. Malasaña and Chueca are better suited to nightlife, but check reviews for noise on the specific street. Salamanca offers quieter residential corners, shopping streets and generally more expensive accommodation.

Check the distance to a metro station, not just to Puerta del Sol. Somewhere a little farther out may offer better value, as long as reaching it does not involve several changes. The guide where to stay in Madrid: neighbourhoods and hotels lists options by neighbourhood character.

Baggage and low-cost airlines

The lowest advertised fare does not necessarily include a cabin suitcase or checked baggage. This also applies to basic fares on traditional airlines, not just low-cost carriers. Distinguish between a personal item that fits under the seat and a larger cabin bag that goes in the overhead locker.

Check dimensions, weight and the number of bags allowed on each leg. If you find a cheap connecting itinerary using different airlines, you may need to collect and recheck your suitcase. Do not assume there is a direct low-cost Athens–Madrid service without checking the current schedule.

Before paying, compare the total cost including baggage, seat selection and any flexibility to change your booking. An option with a slightly higher headline price may turn out to be cheaper and more practical overall.

Practical tips before departure

  • Travel documents: Greek citizens can travel with a valid passport or an identity card accepted for international travel. Check validity and current requirements, particularly for older-style identity cards.
  • Arriving at the airport: allow around two hours before departure, or longer if checking in baggage during a busy period. Follow your airline’s guidance.
  • Total cost: compare flights, accommodation and transfers together. An extra night’s stay can wipe out the saving on a cheaper flight.
  • Roaming: EU roaming rules apply in Spain, subject to your plan’s fair-use limits.
  • Safety: keep an eye on your phone and wallet in busy squares, markets and trains.
