Having preschool-aged children doesn't mean the days of travelling and discovering the world are over.
Many parents are afraid to plan a trip at home or abroad with their children because they feel it will be a continuous chase of children and their time.
However, experienced psychologists state that travelling with your children can be extremely fun and easy.
All you need to do is plan properly and follow some simple rules.
As parents of young children, you should know that the earlier children start travelling, the better they will develop as teenagers and as adults in many areas of their lives.
Below you will find the 5 best parenting tips to enjoy the best, carefree holiday for you and your children.
-
Pack smartly and practically
Many parents dread having to carry and move with children and luggage through airports, hotels, and public transport.
The solution to this problem is to pack smartly.
Experts in travelling with children suggest that one parent carries most of the luggage and the other has something smaller, though the latter should, of course, have their hands free to be able to control the child/children.
Naturally, it is much better if both parents have their hands as free as possible.
The best solution for this is to put the whole family's belongings into two bags; backpacks that you can carry on your shoulders are usually the best option.
A good technique is to make a game out of the entire luggage preparation process with your children.
Tell them that both the trip and its preparation are the true adventures of an explorer and that they have very important responsibilities.
If you turn the whole process into a game, you will see that not only will they comply, but they will be extremely excited to accompany you.
-
Choose your flight carefully
When making the necessary flight bookings, make sure the departure time is close to your child's bedtime.
This will be extremely helpful if the flight is long.
If your child falls asleep shortly after boarding, it's the best way to start a calm and carefree journey.
Tips for flying with children:
- Book seats that allow you to quickly reach the toilet without disturbing other passengers.
- If the plane is not full, try to book an entire row just for your family.
- If your child still wears nappies, it is almost certain that you will need to change them at least once on the plane. Put all the essentials – using small travel sizes – into a small toiletry bag that you can easily hold in one hand. This way you'll only need to take the toiletry bag to the toilet, not your entire changing bag.
- Be prepared for anything that might bother the child: a dummy, if your child uses one naturally, a cardigan if they get cold, their favourite toy, and anything else you deem necessary. Make sure you have immediate access to all these items.
-
Your child's daily routine should be incorporated into your travel schedule.
So, you've made it, and now your holiday with children begins.
All that's left is to enjoy them!
But what about your little ones?
You mustn't forget that they too need to feel comfortable, happy, and enjoy the holiday just as much.
This is why you need to incorporate their usual routine even into your carefree days: meal and sleep times should remain consistent, and you should ensure there's enough time for play and continue your habits, such as reading a bedtime story.
If you manage to keep your child's schedule consistent, they will feel more comfortable because they know what to expect even after a day of sightseeing.
-
Book an apartment instead of a hotel room
If your child is too young to eat local foods in a restaurant and you need to prepare their meals yourself, you should book an apartment with a fully equipped kitchen.
Only then will you be able to comfortably prepare their milk, snacks, breakfast, and all your child's meals.
This is also a great way to save money. You'll be able to buy local foods and cook them the way you and your children eat.
Furthermore, an apartment with more rooms will allow one room to be used as a playroom or for parents to relax when the children are asleep.
Jet lag, sleeplessness, an ache, or even a headache will be able to subside faster if you have an extra room at your disposal.
Something else special will be to buy local foods and fruits and explore them at home with your children.
Taste the fruits and cook anything else with your children. It's an experience your children will enjoy.
-
Travel for longer periods
A one-week trip might be enough for 2 people to see the sights, enjoy an evening out, watch a show, and have dinner at a nice restaurant.
But when travelling with children, the time for all this can easily double.
You might want to spend a day where you don't do any sightseeing but organise a picnic in a park where the children can play, run around, and enjoy nature.
You might also need an entire day where you don't leave the apartment at all, but spend it indoors to rest and cook, as we saw above.
On a trip with children, you shouldn't be rushing all the time; instead, you should make sure they rest, have fun, and enjoy the new experiences.
And you also need to make sure you go where the children want to go.
There are many more travel tips that might seem essential to you.
The truth is that only you know what suits your family, and if you're not sure, you'll figure it out along the way.
