Karpenisi at a glance: what you need to know before booking

Karpenisi is the capital of Evrytania, built at an altitude of 960 metres at the foot of Tymfristos — the mountain everyone here calls Velouchi. It is 300 kilometres from Athens, about three and a half hours via Lamia, and 250 kilometres from Thessaloniki. The town's population is nearly 8,000, a number that makes it large enough to have a hospital, supermarkets, banks, and restaurants that operate all year round.

Evrytania is often called “Greek Switzerland” and for once, the phrase is not a tourist brochure exaggeration. 70% of the area is covered by fir forests, the valleys of Karpenisiotis and Krikellopotamos cut the landscape into layers, and the villages cling to slopes with views that change every few kilometres. In autumn, when the beech trees turn red, the route to Proussos is one of the most beautiful in the country.

Historically, the area is linked to the National Resistance: in Koryschades, three kilometres from the town, the National Council, the so-called “Mountain Government”, convened in May 1944, and the old primary school now functions as the National Resistance Museum. A little further on, the Monastery of Proussos, built literally into the rock, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Roumeli and attracts thousands of visitors in August.

The cuisine is distinctively pastoral and forest-based: rooster with hilopites (pasta), goat in a clay pot, trachanas (fermented milk soup), wild greens pies, mushrooms, local sheep's cheese, and fir honey — the famous Vanilla Evrytanias, one of the most expensive in the country. Prices are low: a full meal at a tavern rarely exceeds 18-22 euros per person.

The Velouchi Ski Centre is 12 km from the town, at an altitude of 1,850 metres, with slopes mainly suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers. The season lasts from late December to March, depending on snowfall. However, Karpenisi is not just a winter destination: in spring and summer, it buzzes with rafting on the Karpenisiotis and Tavropos rivers, canyoning in the Pantavrechi gorge, hiking trails, and mountain biking.

Practically, a car is essential. The villages are connected by narrow provincial roads and the KTEL (bus service) mainly serves the route to Lamia and Athens. In winter, the roads to Megalo Horio and Proussos can freeze, so snow tyres and a 4x4 or anti-skid chains are a good idea. Petrol stations are available in town and on the exit towards Proussos — fill up before heading uphill.

Karpenisi Town: services and life all year round

The central square with its cafes, restaurants, and shops makes the town the most convenient choice, especially if you are travelling with children or arriving late at night. It is also the closest base to Velouchi. The drawback: it doesn't have the quaint charm of the stone villages.

Koryschades: stone and history, three minutes from town

A preserved settlement with cobbled streets, stone houses, and valley views, just 3 kilometres from the centre. It combines village charm with proximity to the town — for many, it's the ideal solution for a weekend break.

Megalo Horio and Mikro Horio: the classic image of Evrytania

Twelve kilometres south, the two villages sit opposite each other in the Karpenisiotis valley, with plane trees, running waters, and taverns with fireplaces. It's the most romantic choice for couples and the best starting point for hikes, but you definitely need a car.

Velouchi and mountain guesthouses: for skiers

On the road to the ski resort, there are accommodations with direct access to the slopes and views above the clouds. Ideal if skiing is the main reason for your trip, with the caveat that you'll need to drive down to town for dinner in the evening.

Proussos and southern Evrytania: for isolation

Thirty kilometres south, through an impressive gorge, Proussos offers absolute tranquility, the historic monastery, and access to Pantavrechi. A choice for those who want to disconnect — allow 45 minutes of driving on winding roads for each journey.
