Transport Equivalent 2021 – What it is – How to get it

The transport equivalent is a measure established by the Greek state to reduce the cost of travel for permanent residents on the country's islands.

With the transport equivalent measure, the cost of transport between mainland and island Greece is equalised.

The transport equivalent is valid for travel both from mainland Greece to the islands and between islands.

It is calculated based on what the same journey would cost on mainland Greece for the same distance.

The Transport Equivalent is paid in the form of financial aid and is tax-exempt and cannot be seized.

 

Transport Equivalent for businesses

The transport equivalent measure also applies to businesses and legal entities.

For businesses to benefit from the Island Cost Compensation (A.NH.KO.), they must have their headquarters on an island and be registered with the relevant island chamber.

Eligible businesses are those that fall, based on accounting standards, into the categories of very small, small, and medium-sized.

 

Transport Equivalent for flights

Since 20/05/2019, the transport equivalent also applies to flights and air tickets.

Aegean Airlines participates in the island support measure through Olympic Air tickets, as well as Aegean's entire domestic network where the transport equivalent applies.

To benefit from the transport equivalent on air tickets, simply follow these steps:

• Register HERE using your TAXISnet credentials.
• Fill in your personal details and provide a bank account in IBAN format.
• You will immediately receive your personal Unique Islander Number (MAN), which you will use for the transport equivalent for both air tickets and ferry tickets

 

With your Unique Islander Number, you book the tickets you want (either flights or ferry tickets), and at the end of the month, the compensation from the Transport Equivalent measure is credited to your bank account.

We remind you that this amount is unseizable and tax-exempt.

 

Transport Equivalent Aegean

To benefit from the transport equivalent and travel with Aegean and Olympic Air, you just need to have issued your personal Unique Islander Number.

Then go to the Aegeanair.com website where you can make your booking online.

In the field for your personal details, you will enter the MAN in the corresponding field (see photo).

If you have followed all the steps correctly, at the end of the month, you will automatically see the money credited to your account!

 

How the transport equivalent is calculated

For sea routes by plane, the maximum amount you will be refunded (ANHIKO) is the maximum amount you would receive if you travelled by ferry.

For example, if you travel Thessaloniki – Mytilene by plane, you will receive the maximum amount corresponding to the ferry route for Kavala – Mytilene (the nearest port to Mytilene).

It is clarified that the transport equivalent applies to routes over 80 miles, and the value taken into account is the most economical ticket class with a berth.

The transport equivalent credits the difference between the ticket you purchased and the price the same journey would have cost on mainland Greece.
