Tips for Airline Ticket Refunds

You’ve booked a flight but just as the departure time approaches, you can’t fly for some reason!

Getting a refund on airline tickets is usually a troublesome process that many people give up on, fearing the procedures involved.

However, Travelo.gr has gathered all the important tips on how you can get back the cost of your airline ticket, or at least part of it, if you don't travel.

The truth is that we cannot predict what will happen in the future, and so often travel plans change shortly before completion.

An illness, a job change, or a natural disaster can lead to the cancellation of our flight.

Is your airline ticket refundable or not?

There are various fare categories with airlines. When you bought your ticket, you most likely chose the category you wanted. Each category has its own rules for both cancellations and changes.

If you are looking for cheap Aegean airline tickets, then you have probably booked non-refundable tickets. These tickets are usually considerably cheaper than other categories, but if you do not travel for any reason, then you are not entitled to a refund.

In this case, you can contact the airline and formally request a refund of airport taxes – something you are entitled to if you did not fly.

 

Call your airline as soon as possible

As soon as you know that you cannot fly for any reason, call your airline and ask to speak to customer service.

Explain the – important – reason why you need to cancel your tickets and request the full fare amount back.

If there are several days left until your departure, then you have a good chance of receiving the full amount back.

If you see that you cannot get a full refund, then ask if you can get a voucher of equivalent value for a future flight – you will still be better off!

You have a good chance of “winning” a flight change or a voucher for another route if you are a frequent traveller with that particular airline or a member of the airline's frequent flyer programme (if applicable).

Contact your travel agency

Travel agents and, similarly, travel agencies will be particularly helpful if you want a partial or full refund for a flight you didn't use.

However, travel agencies often have their own rules and also fees. So, if you submit a refund request, the travel agency will very likely keep a portion of the money – if it's refunded to you – as a fee!

 

What happens with flights cancelled by the airline

Flights cancelled by an airline are subject to completely different legislation regarding refunds than a flight that may be cancelled by a passenger.

If a flight does not operate due to bad weather, the airline will either refund the full amount or issue a voucher for another future flight of equal or greater value.

However, in no case can you seek compensation for flight cancellations due to bad weather or other safety factors!

Furthermore, you are entitled to a refund if there is a schedule change to the planned route or even a delay of more than 3 hours.

What suits you best

Statistically, flight cancellations by passengers are particularly low. Thus, it is more advantageous for you to book airline tickets that are non-refundable or non-cancellable, as the cost difference compared to tickets that offer refund security if you don't fly is quite significant.

While your own cancellation of a flight can naturally happen to anyone, the probability is quite low, and the cost if you choose airline tickets with a refundable price is quite high!
