10 tips for finding cheap flight tickets

Finding affordable tickets for every trip is certainly something that excites most people! Imagine the scenario: You're organising a trip, setting your budget based on prices you've thought of or seen online, and suddenly you discover you can book flight tickets at half the price! Feelings of joy overwhelm you, and it's certainly a big help for your budget!

 

But how can you find cheap flights with just a few small tips?

 

• Hunt for special offers

Always, and at all times, airlines release offers on flight tickets. If you hunt for these offers, you can save a good amount of money from your travel budget. Discounts usually reach up to 40-50% – however, this depends on the period you wish to travel.

 

• Subscribe to mileage programmes

If you travel frequently with an airline or a collaborating group – such as Star Alliance – then you can collect miles on each flight, which you can later redeem for free tickets. This way, you earn more the more you travel!

 

• Search individually

When you search for flight tickets on Travelo.gr and our partners, it's a good idea to search for individual tickets. That is, if you want to book a return journey from Athens to Berlin, don't book both tickets in the same reservation. First, book the outbound journey and then the return. This way, it is very likely you'll save some money, as airlines often charge more when tickets involve a return trip. The same sometimes applies when booking tickets for multiple passengers. For example, if you are a family of four, you might want to see if it's more beneficial to book each ticket separately rather than all together in one reservation.

 

• Look for discount coupons

Periodically, there are offers in newspapers and on websites, or from various telecommunications companies (such as Cosmote and Vodafone) that provide discounts on flight tickets simply by acquiring a code! Even here on Travelo, we often provide you with flight discounts or exclusive offers!

 

• Only make online bookings

We've mentioned this specific tip quite a bit in previous posts: Try to make only online bookings, not telephone bookings or bookings through travel agencies. Telephone bookings, as well as bookings made at physical travel agency offices, incur extra fees of approximately 20-50€. Why not save this money?

 

• Try low-cost airlines

Some people might break out in a rash at the mention of low-cost airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet, or think they're not safe, but this isn't true in reality. All airlines meet the same safety standards, as defined by the EU (for airlines based in the EU). The differences between low-cost companies and traditional ones lie in the airports they fly to, the services they offer on the plane, the non-free meals and snacks, and so on.

But why not save some money by sacrificing a free coffee on the plane? Ryanair flight tickets, for example, can offer you a flight from Athens to Thessaloniki or Athens to Santorini (in winter) for just 10€!

 

• If you're flexible, fly on weekdays!

If your trip dates are flexible, then try to fly on a weekday. This will result in a much lower price than flying on a weekend or a Friday. On these three days, prices are higher than on the other days. Plan your trip so you can book cheap flights by flying on weekdays!

 

• Found a good price? Book it straight away!

If you found a very good price for the tickets you're interested in, make the booking immediately. It's highly unlikely you'll find a lower price, and you might even lose the one you just found! So, don't miss the opportunity and make your reservation right away.

 

• Don't listen to the various strange techniques described on unreliable websites

On several websites, you'll read similar articles about techniques for cheap flight tickets, etc. Many of the techniques they'll mention will not only not help you, but on the contrary, might even increase the prices of the tickets you see. Techniques such as deleting cookies and history, booking only at night, booking only on a specific day of the week, etc., will only manage to increase the cost of your flight tickets.
